If you defer and give up a TD, game over. That's why under the current format you won't see NFL teams that win the toss deferring like the NCAA does.Very true Iceberg.I would love to see the stats on the new OT rules of who won and,did they get the ball first.Still if I were a coach and my teams D was good to above average I would defer. If you have a good kicker he can kick it beyond the endzone for an auto touch back. You get a 3 and out your going to get good field position and only needing 3 to win.

Can't just remove special teams, start with the Schiano kickoff replacement IMO.

If your defense is that good, take the ball, score a FG, stop the other team and win. An NFL coach will never defer when there's no guarantee they will get their hands on the ball....If you have a good defense, it should not matter.
If they do that, they will loose a ton of fans, just on the premise of changing the game dramatically after all these years.

You have a better chance of scoring if you have the ball first. Why defer?
Once the stats come out for this seasons new ot rules I think there will be some coaches change their minds about deferring.I know at least 2 of the ot games I watched might have been 3,the team that received the ball first lost.
Just like moving the kickoff to the 35? That sure was a lot of noise about nothing.

NBC execs must be doing cartwheels to get a winner takes the division scenario for it's SNF finale. Not only is it for the division, but they get the very ratings friendly Cowboys going up against one of the most exciting rookies to come along in years!

Here's some stats through week 12. I don't think there will be a lot of minds changed, except maybe yours....Once the stats come out for this seasons new ot rules I think there will be some coaches change their minds about deferring.I know at least 2 of the ot games I watched might have been 3,the team that received the ball first lost.
There have been 17 overtime games this year, through 12 weeks of play—a very small sample size compared to the hundreds of overtime games played under the old rules. The teams who have received the ball first have won 11 of these 17, lost five, and tied one, for a winning percentage of 0.676. This rate seems unsustainably high—an increase from before the rule change—and likely to come down in the ensuing weeks and seasons. Still, it appears the team that wins the coin toss continues to possess a marked advantage.
So the 2-13 Chiefs have 5 players selected to the Pro Bowl. The 4-11 Raiders have none, and went 2-0 against the Chiefs. Pro Bowler RB Jammal Charles, had 1440+ yards against the rest of the league... Only 14 yards on 14 rushes against the Raiders.

What does the above have to do with anything? Which Raiders were snubbed and how?
Now is the time of year fans forget they aren't the only ones who voted for these guys.
