NFL 2009-10 Season

Just like Bill it's time to start the '09 season of HOT/NOT 10....and here we go:

HOT 10

1. Giants
2. Colts
3. Jets
4. Ravens
5. Saints
6. Bengals
7. Bears
8. Vikings
9. Eagles
10. Patriots

NOT 10

10. Seahawks
9. Cardinals
8. Buccaneers
7. Lions
6. Redskins
5. Titans
4. Chiefs
3. Rams
2. Raiders
1. Browns

My Top 10:

1. Baltimore
2. New Orleans
3. NY Giants
4. Indianapolis
5. NY Jets
6. Minnesota
7. Philadelphia
8. New England
9. Cincinnati
10. Denver

Carolina falls to 0-3.

After the way they dominated last year, this is hard to believe.
Sadly it isn't. :( The Panthers have never had good seasons back to back. They might be SB contenders next year, but they are finished for 2009. So frustrating. They actually have more talent than half the teams in the league yet they'll be lucky to scratch out 6 wins now.

The Panthers still have road games

@ Arizona
@ New Orleans
@ NY Jets
@ New England
@ NY Giants

And that's assuming they take care of business at home, and the Panthers usually save their real stinkers for the home folks. This is the same song, different verse of the garbage they've pulled for years.

1. A Head Coach and Quarterback earn way too much praise when things are going well and way too much criticism when things are not going well. Case and point Eric Mangini & Brady Quinn vs. Rex Ryan & Mark Sanchez. Is Sanchez really THAT much better than Brady Quinn? Doubtful. He just so happens to be surrounded by better players. Is Rex Ryan THAT better of a coach than Mangini? Doubtful. Again, there are a lot more moving parts to make that direct assumption. Even though the Browns are struggling, I want more than anything to see continuity with this team. Give the coach time to build a team with HIS type players. Look at what Rex and the Jets are doing with the players Mangini helped recruit. At the same time, give Quinn some time at QB. He can't fairly be judged with such weak and inexperienced weapons surrounding him such as Mike Fuerry, Robert Royal, Mohamed Massoquoi, etc. Can he?
The only continuity you'll see is Randy Lerner paying coaches who no longer work for him. It's absurd. I hope Quinn continues to play, but I think he's going to be a bust. He stares down receivers, holds the ball too long, won't throw downfield & is inaccurate. Tim Couch anybody?

Where is Brian Robiskie, btw?

3. The defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers are 1 Rob Bironas made field goal away from being 0-3. The same as the Bucs, Browns, Rams and Chiefs. Wow!
Somethings not right in pittsburgh. I see a disappointing 8-8 in their future.

Wow, this is some serious spin right here! Wheeeeee!!! :D

For the sake of accuracy you need to add that with the Jets, Mangini did well in his first year only...when they apparently weren't his players. I guess Herm Edwards deserves all the credit for that.

It as the second and third year with the team that Mangini imploded...with his own recruits. Yikes, not a good sign.

How weird is this...I'm criticizing Rex Ryan at 3-0, and you're spinning up Mangini, who everyone else thinks is a distaster so far. Good luck with that! :)

I do agree about Quinn, me may turn out to be good...eventually.

Sandra

I'm not trying to apologize for Mangini or Quinn. There's a lot of blame to go around and I am well aware of that. I am simply saying QB's and HC's earn way too much praise when things go right and way to much criticism when things go wrong. These aren't the only two people that make up this organization.

I agree with you about HCs, but not QBs. It's almost impossible to win with a bad QB even if the rest of the team is good. See Carolina and Jake Delhomme.

Cough, Trent Dilfer, Cough.... :)

I get what you're saying though. We don't have a good enough defense or run game to overcome a mediocre QB like Baltimore did when they won the Super Bowl. I don't like what I see so far from Quinn either. Unfortunately I'm not sure what the other option is? Give up on Quinn so early in his learning process or go to the gunslinger/turnover king in Derek Anderson?

At least Dilfer wouldn't lose the game single-handed. Delhomme is doing that weekly.

How did I know you were going to bring up Dilfer? :) That was an uncommon exception to the rule...you or I could have QB'd that team to the playoffs.

Quinn isn't a rookie. This is his third year in the league.....I know there's no substitute for experience, but he should have gained some experience just from practicing the past 2 years, right? He looks like a fish out of water.

I don't know what the Browns should do. On one hand, I'd hate to see them give up on a 1st rd draft pick after 3 games. We've seen that story and know how it turns out. On the other hand, I really like DA & I think the Browns will rue the day if they let him slip away.

See, I agree with the praise/criticism thing regarding QB's, because to some extent they are the product of their environment. Matt Cassel isn't going to win as many games in Kansas City. He just isn't. Ever. Unless things change in Kansas City, which brings us to...

But for head coaches it's different, as they are the ones creating the environment. They are the ones responsible for the environment. Coaching changes have much more of an effect than QB changes, more immediate and also more lasting, which is why a bad hire like Mangini is much worse than bringing in a bad QB.

If the Browns had hired Bill Cowher, Paul Holmgren, Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, or Mike Shanahan, they may not be 3-0, but they would not be the joke of the league, with everyone...fans, media, players...ticked off at the coach. As I said, if you're going to annoy people like Bill Belicheck does, you better have the resume of Bill Belicheck.

Mangini got the worst part of Belicheck, the personality, without the good part of knowing how to build a winning football team.

I couldn't disagree more. If I could pick one player or coach from a list of Manning, Brady, Brees, Cowher, Parcells, or Dungy, it sure as hell wouldn't be a HC. A good QB makes the HC and everybody else on the offense look much better.

Oh, the anticipation! Mangini is supposed to name the starter by Wednesday! I am as torn with this decision as you are.

The one thing with DA is that making better decisions with the ball can be taught. Arm strength and the ability to throw down the field can't. DA has the arm strength to stretch the field and Quinn doesn't. (Which is odd because Quinn is one of the most muscular men on the team). Maybe DA can be coached into not throwing into triple coverage which will help eliminate some of the turnovers? Having DA on the field also keeps the opposing defense honest. They can't stack the line like they do with Quinn since DA can light it up down field.

Then there's Quinn. Did he get a fair chance? He is our 1st round draft pick from 3 years ago. Ahhhh... I keep going back and forth with this. I'm just sick of this back and forth stuff. Make a decision and stick with it already Mangini!
