I have to agree that Thursday night is for lesser schools. If the schools have the power and pull, they will not be on Thursday nights, and actually have it in their ESPN contracts that it will not happen. The SEC only allows 2 games a year, and some of the SEC schools (UGA is one) refuse to be eligible for it.

Nope... completely wrong - The ACC has a major contract with ESPN which is why you see most ACC teams playing on Thursday nights. This was stated a year or so ago during the last resign of the contract. There are other contracts with other conferences and schools about playing on Thursday nights but there isn't many - same can be said about Friday nights or other nights of the week. There are others that just don't play anything but Saturdays unless its a big signed game based on TV contracts. This is almost the same thing as many schools that have never played night games till now as they either prefer to keep it Saturdays only and not buy lights (we know those that didn't have them for a while had plenty of money for lights) or another day where the game ends before dusk.

Its really based on contracts and who WANTS it more IMO than those that don't want it - its no hidden fact that many ACC schools love having a single Thursday night game, I know its one of the biggest games I look forward to and has been for many years even before ESPN started their contract with the ACC.

Now you can say you weren't wrong on this - but the wording in which you stated was incorrect. I'm stating facts here based on reading contract notices and hearing first hand the reports that I know came out of them thru various media outlets...I can't produce links (ohh my gawd..no links) but hey it is what it is.

It's all about the $$$ - plain and simple.

It is? then you need to take a look at the SEC contract with ESPN which states "no more than 2 SEC games will be available for Thursday night", and at the public stance Mike Adams at UGA has taken about the dawgs never playing Thurs. Sorry to tell you, but most schools don't consider Thurs night a step up. If the ACC is excited about being on that night and other power conferences aren't, tells something about it's "negotiating" power.

Going to have to disagree here, its nothing about any school being better or lesser of a school or team. There ain't but so many Thursday nights so I'm happy to see VT play on 2 this year as they do every year and I personally think its a great thing much like Stanford and Washington whom will play in about 30mins.

There aren't but so many Saturday time slots either, and lesser programs aren't getting them if up against bigger draws.

Yes, Thursday night games are big money. No doubt some programs love to have them available. Don't think anyone has argued against that particular fact. I've even stated it myself.

Yup, and the MAC has a contract playing games Tuesday nights (later in the season) this allows them (lesser schools) to get face time on National TV.

Not sure about MAC and tuesday nights.... but I don't buy into the "lesser schools" comment. ESPN will for example focus on big games for its Game day promotional be it a new team in the SEC (unranked) or a few ranked teams or just two unranks playing for the first time. Whatever helps Gameday have focus and story line is why ESPN will go for those higher time slots on their channels less of course NASCAR comes into play which has a lot lately. To me its just that some schools refuse to do games on certain days and nights - VT for example will NOT play a game on Saturday nights - they refuse for some odd reason that I've been told has to do with too much of a party school even though they weren't voted by Playboy as a big time party school like UVA *rolls eyes* lol

SO really its just about what schools want or don't want to do not for being lesser or greater than another.

It's all about the Money ...
ESPN pays a good price to get the schools on nights other than Saturday.
I KNOW thats why the MAC does it.

Oh yeah for sure... I'm betting Washington is loving it right now leading #8 Stanford. Washington pulls this off Stanford should drop out the top 30 cause they are playing worse than my Hokies did against Pitt.

Edit: Yep Washington took em down.

Bet Stanford is feeling a little lesser, or lowly, or whatever you want to call it, right about now. ;)

So much for Stanford competing for the National title like Mark May was hinting at before the game started and Wilbon on PTI saying that the PAC10 was the best conference in football. He is way off.

And why the Big East & ACC are happy to play on Thursday nights.

Students & Fans may not be happy (Tech fans were exstatic on the AJC blog when the schedules came out, because it's our first year not being on Thursday), but the Conference is happy to get $$$.

Problem is, is it really a weak conference, or a strong conference beating itself up? I tend to base how a conference is by how it plays other conferences. Until they play real OOC games, can't say which it definitively is.

Didnt Washington also spoil USC a few years back?

Yes they did 2009 #3 USC - I really don't think Stanford is a bad team but they just had a bad day and Washington showed up to play. Expect Stanford to prob drop out of top 30 after this but they will bounce back I'm sure.

VT Students and Fans are very happy about keeping that Thursday night game - last several GT fans I talked to Labor day that I know were disappointed about no Thursday night game so mixed bag here.
