NCAA Football 2009-10 Season

Cal won't, either way. They might go down to 15-20 range, after that debacle at Oregon.
I think Cal will drop to the 10-15 range just because of all the upsets yesterday. I hope anyway(keeps USC SoS higher)

For those of you who thought Cal would drop in the rankings: good call. They're #24 in the new rankings.

LSU jumped to #4 after a close call? Bit high.
LSU is overrated but somebody has to be in the top 5. Iowa goes from unranked to 13. Penn St dropped to 15. I'd have them lower. At least Miami has beaten some teams this year. Penn St is 0-1 in my book.

USF knocks Florida State from Big 3 status in the Sunshine State

SPORTS COMMENTARY

September 27, 2009

TALLAHASSEE — OK, boys and girls, it's time for all of us from Orlando to traipse right on up to the front of the classroom and write it on the blackboard 100 times.

"We're sorry Jim Leavitt ... We're sorry Jim Leavitt ... We're sorry Jim Leavitt."

We castigated the USF coach for dumping the annual series with UCF because Leavitt said the Bulls had bigger plans and bigger games against better teams.

We criticized him for saying USF should not be compared to UCF but to Florida, Florida State and Miami.

We mocked him when he told us of his aspirations of crashing the state's "Big Three" and turning it into a "Big Four."

But now, after USF's monumental manhandling of Florida State Saturday at the Doak Campbell Memorial Mortuary, it's time for everybody to admit it:

Leavitt was right.

We were wrong.

"This win changes history," said Leavitt after his undefeated Bulls, in their first game ever against Florida State, pulled off the shocking 17-7 upset. "You have to beat Florida, Florida State or Miami to even be talked about. Now when people ask me should we be in the Big Four, I can say we should at least be [in the conversation]."

In the conversation?

Are you kidding me?

After Saturday, FSU should be evicted from the Big Three and replaced by USF. And forget about Jimbo Fisher as Florida State's head coach in waiting. How about Jimbo Leavitt?

Leavitt's Bulls came to Doak Campbell Crypt and Crematorium with a freshman (B.J. Daniels) who'd never started a collegiate game and not only beat the Seminoles; they beat up the Seminoles.

What happened to an FSU offensive line that was supposed to be one of the nation's best? Offensive line coach Rick Trickett is one of the highest paid assistants in the country at more than $300,000 per year, but Saturday he should have made minimum wage.

The Bulls stopped FSU on a goal-line stand. They caused five fumbles. They bludgeoned FSU's running game, allowing just 9 yards rushing. They battered quarterback Christian Ponder, sacking him five times.

"This was no fluke," USF defensive end George Selvie said. "That game wasn't even close."

This was embarrassing for Seminoles everywhere. There's a good chance now the 'Noles will lose to Miami, USF and Florida in the same season. Maybe it's FSU, not USF, that should be playing an annual series with UCF.

How can the Seminoles, a week after destroying No. 7 BYU, get physically dominated in front of the biggest home crowd in five seasons? It's no wonder FSU fans were asked to wear all-white in the stands Saturday. The perfect wardrobe to watch their team surrender on the field.

On a day when the Seminoles commemorated the 10-year anniversary of their 1999 national title team, they showed they're no longer even the best team on Florida's Gulf Coast.

At halftime with the Seminoles down 14-0, Peter Warrick, the star of the 1999 team, shook his head as he talked to reporters.

"This is bad," he said.

Real bad.

And what made it worse is FSU never really considered signing ultra-athletic USF freshman quarterback B.J. Daniels, who grew up in Tallahassee and played at nearby Lincoln High School.

When Fisher and Leavitt shook hands before the game, Fisher apparently told Leavitt "nice to meet you." That's when Leavitt reminded him they had actually met before — at Lincoln High, where they both were scouting Daniels.

Except USF offered him a scholarship; FSU didn't. And, so, when USF star quarterback Matt Grothe went down with a season-ending knee injury last week, Daniels started his first game Saturday in his hometown. By the time he was through, the Tallahassee Terror had run for 126 yards, threw two touchdowns and totaled 341 yards of offense — 53 more than FSU's entire team.

Asked if he would have attended FSU had he been offered a scholarship, Daniels just smiled and said, "Right now, I'm just having fun winning."

So is his coach.

After it was all over, Leavitt received not one but two Gatorade showers. He gave his players and coaches huge bear hugs. And as the throng of green-and-gold clad fans chanted "U-S-F! U-S-F!," Leavitt stood with his arms raised and his index finger and pinkie extended to make the sign of the Bull.

Rain was falling from the skies and tears were forming in his eyes.

USF has had some big wins in the past —Auburn, West Virginia, etc. — but nothing like this.

"I don't think there's any question this is the biggest," Leavitt said.

Welcome to the Big Four, Coach.

Please accept our apologies.

Hey USF,
Talk to me when you've done it for more than a few games and more than one season.

Will you be there in 2,3,5 years ?

I agree, this is more about FSU reeking this year. Even Appalachian St. defeats Michigan once in a while, doesn't make them a power.

South Florida so far is nothing more than a flash in the pan. I'm sure everyone remembers their quick tumble after making it to #3 on an extremely easy conference schedule.

I'm not so sure. I don't expect great things from South Florida this year, but they have access to one of the best recruiting grounds in the nation there in Florida. This is the type of win that can get South Florida some serious street cred. And if they start getting 4 and 5 star players they will do to the Big East what Miami used to do, and that means BCS. People laugh at the Big East because they feel the teams are mediocre compared to other BCS conferences. South Florida is the one Big East team that could get SEC type players.

Lets not get too carried away with SF, but dont dismiss them either.

Like anders said, they recruit in a fertile area, a few good wins give them cred, and some just want to stay home. This is not the first time they have done what they did.

That said, it is a ways down the road.

I think the Rankings did pretty well this week. LSU will drop in 2 weeks when FLA beats them (if LSU can get my GA I hope they do.) and then of course Alabama vs FLA in the SEC title game winner of that likely will be in the national title game. If its FLA they will go in at #1 if its Bama they will likely go in at #2 if Texas can run the tables.

Question if Texas loses whos the next best shot at the national title game? Boise State? Really? V Tech?

Not Boise St. They won't go higher than where they are. 1 win over Oregon won't carry them to the NC. I think USC is lurking if they can keep winning and Texas loses. Oklahoma is very much alive provided they beat Miami and Texas. And Ohio St is still out there. Unless Florida/Alabama and Texas run the table it'll be like 2007 where anything could happen.

good point But does a one loss USC or texas or OK get in over an undefeated Boise St? Probably so. I mean Boise state really isnt playing anyone.
One loss isn't much of a crime. Florida couldn't even do it. And Boise St isn't THAT good. They beat Fresno St and gave up 500 yards of offense. Arkansas could win the WAC.

I agree with you in respect to recruiting amongst the state. Central Florida and the north is Gator factory. The south is been pretty much FSU and Miami. This win over FSU can swing the recruiting war more towards South Florida. Now, until they beat Miami and FSU a couple times, they should not make a big deal of this.....but they are a rising program with THE richest recruiting hotbed for high school football players in the country.

Hmmmm, sounds alot like a certain team from Mississippi

There's an AWEFUL lot of football to be played before saying who's going to be undefeated and who's playing in the MNC game.

Fla for one, has to play without Tebow (probably)or a banged up one at that.

Can Fla go on like nothing happened ?
