MLB Trades and Rumors

HITTERS
Matt Holliday tops wish lists but isn't the only prize available.
Matt HollidayLF, A's
The best slugger in the rumor mill will be available. The Mets and Giants top the list of needy.
Aubrey Huff1B, Orioles
The veteran carries a solid bat and can also play outfield. A fringe prospect should be enough for Baltimore to unload what remains of Huff's $8 million salary.

Either of these two guys would be perfect for the Marlins who are in desperate need of a big bat.

- Holliday can fill a void in right, send Hermedia to Oakland for him and a propsect...they both can use the scenery change. Then bring up Mayben and put him in center and Cody Ross in left.

- IF it's Huff, send Bonafacio and Hermedia....Huff goes to 1st...Cantu come BACK to 3rd where he plays better. Bring up Mayben to center, Ross to left and Brett Carroll or Chris Coghlan in right.

I would preffer the Holliday trade because it would make MORE sense to pull off. Who knows, maybe the pull of BOTH trades....:D:D:D

Tigers would look good with Holliday (either of them) in the line up.

We're down to the last 11 days before the trade deadline, and for the first time I can ever recall, it seems like more teams need hitting more than pitching.

Off the top of my head, the Red Sox, Tigers, Marlins and Giants are all contending, but need to add a bat more than a pitcher.

O's, Padres Swap Salazar and Meredith

By Drew Silva [July 19 at 6:51pm CST]
6:51pm: As several readers have pointed out, this deal may be a precursor to a Danys Baez or George Sherrill trade.
Both have been floated as possible trade chips recently.
6:29pm: Kubatko reports the Orioles have acquired submariner Cla Meredith in return. He was 4-2 with a 4.17 ERA and a 20/13 K/BB ratio in 36 2/3 innings for the Padres.
"He gets a lot of ground balls and can pitch every other day," O's president Andy MacPhail said Sunday evening. "The ground ball ratio becomes more important later in the summer in our ballpark."
5:22pm: According to MASN's Roch Kubatko, the Orioles have traded infielder Oscar Salazar to the Padres. The 31-year-old was 13-for-31 with two home runs and six RBI for the O's since his call-up in early June.
We're waiting to hear who (or what) Baltimore got in return. It's apparently not a "player to be named later," so we should have something shortly. Stay tuned.

Looks like the Indians have released Kobayashi ....

Indians Release Masa Kobayashi
By Drew Silva [July 19 at 9:23pm CST]

According to Japan's Sponichi, via NPB Tracker, Masahide Kobayashi was granted his release from the Indians on Sunday afternoon. The 35-year-old right-hander was demoted to Triple-A in mid-May and there were rumors at the time that his release might be imminent. Here's what Tim said at the time:

The Indians signed Kobayashi to a two-year, $6.25MM deal in November of 2007. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but he posted a 5.10 ERA and 5.4 K/9 in 65.3 innings in his Tribe career.

And here's what Kobayashi shared with the media Sunday: “Nothing is decided at the moment and I am having my agent look for a team for me (in the United States). In the meantime I will just keep myself ready to pitch.” It sounds like he's aiming to sign on with another MLB club. Here's our impressively lengthy Masa Kobayashi archive.

It's about time. Certainly not the type of pitcher we hoped for upon signing him. He's been a great disapointment.

Pirates Halt Talks With Sanchez & Wilson

These Pirates just can't hang onto any talent, can they?

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates have cut off contract talks with shortstop Jack Wilson and second baseman Freddy Sanchez after the player didn't respond to multiyear offers, increasing the chances the double-play duo will be traded before the season ends.

Sherrill hunt

The Angels have expressed interest in Baltimore closer George Sherrill, and the Orioles had a scout at Saturday's game, but the teams do not appear close to a deal.

The Orioles so far are asking for two top prospects for Sherrill. The Angels would like Sherrill to pitch the eighth inning for them, but not at the price of, say, Brandon Wood and Trevor Reckling.

Sherrill, 32, has converted 20 saves in 23 opportunities, with a 2.35 earned-run average. He would earn $915,000 for the final two months this season and would not be eligible for free agency until after the 2011 season.

The Orioles have told teams that Sherrill, reliever Danys Baez and infielders Aubrey Huff and Melvin Mora are available.

L.A. Times

Looks like the Angels are trying to shore up their pen with Scott Shields out for the year.

Brad Penny's Future

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 20, 2009 at 1:03pm CST]
The Red Sox have a surplus of starting pitching, and [ame]http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=olney_buster[/ame] says it's possible they'll deal Brad Penny for a Grade B prospect in the next couple weeks. We've heard very little about Penny in the last month, but he could fit on a team like the Brewers, who are short on starters.
Olney says the Red Sox would almost certainly not offer Penny arbitration after the season, so they could deal him now to get something in return for their investment. Penny doesn't profile as a Type A or B free agent now, so trading him now would be the surest way of obtaining talent in return. However, the Red Sox could keep him to maintain their enviable rotation depth.

Is Juan Pierre available? Detroit papers are talking about him as an addition for the Tiger's.
I don't think the Dodgers want to trade him.

First, he is to valuable to them. As he has shown when Manny was out and when Manny went down yesterday. He is a good 4th outfielder that brings a unique eliminate and able to give any of the outfielders a day off without them missing much.

Second, they would have to pay part of his salary as no team would want to take his full salary. The Dodgers are already paying to many people to play for other teams or to be on the DL. They do not want to pay yet another team to take Pierre.

What's he making?

Looks like the Sox are going to have 2 former Pirates.

The Pirates could be a good team if they still had the outfield of Bay, Nady, and Mclouth

Pretty soon they will have Jose Tabata, McCuttchen and Milledge in the outfield.

Jones will be on first, Young on second, Alvarez on third Doumit catching. Don't know SS.
