Red Sox & Cards Swap Lugo & Duncan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 22 at 4:31pm CST]
Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the Cardinals will trade Chris Duncan to the Red Sox for Julio Lugo. Via Twitter Miklasz says the Red Sox will still pay Lugo's salary and Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald agrees.
Duncan has a career .851 OPS against right-handers and is under team control through 2012.

The Sox will still be paying Lugo's salary. That makes a little more sense.

We're down to the last 11 days before the trade deadline, and for the first time I can ever recall, it seems like more teams need hitting more than pitching.

... the Red Sox ...need to add a bat more than a pitcher.

Well, they got a bat or two, but the problem they face reminds me of the problem they faced in 1990, when they passed on Willie Magee, who was taken for the waiver price of $100,00 by the Oakland "A"s. People derided GM Lou Gorman for passing on him and repeatedly saying "What could I do with Willie Magee", yet unfortunately, he had a team full of batters who could hit reasonably well from both sides of the plate, so there really wasn't much that he could have done with him, whereas Oakland needed another full time outfielder.

The Red Sox need more offense from catcher, where Varitek is hitting .225, from right field, where Drew is hitting .235, and 0 for his last 21, and even left fileld, where Bay is hitting about .200 for the last month (update: they just said on ESPN that he is 11 for his last 77, and has driven in just 3 runs since June 23rd), but the Red Sox like those three players and there is no way to combine the hitting of a bench player with the hitting of a starter. Basically, all a quality becnh player can do for them is to sub for starters when they are injured.
