It's a Red Sox fan favorite past time to line up the pitching rotation for a potential playoff series. This year is even more intriguing (NOTE: BY NO MEANS am I saying the Sox are a sure thing for the postseason. This exercise is entirely hypothetical based on the current standings and assuming health, other than Clay Buchholz, remains status quo)
Clay Buchholz- hasn't pitched in anger for almost three months, but is expected back next week and is 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 12 starts this year. IF he is healthy it would be hard to bypass him as the ace, but that's a BIG if.
Jon Lester- Seems to have found his groove after struggling for two months. His 12-7, 3.97 is very respectable and he has pitched in pressure cooker games in his career.
Jake Peavy- IMO, the biggest upside of any of the starters. Is a huge competitor, but he lacks postseason success. His 10-5, 3.99 is very respectable
John Lackey- kudos to him for battling back from both personal and professional problems two years ago and then TJ surgery following the 2011 season. His 8-11, 3.17 is very deceiving, for some reason the Sox bats fall asleep when Lackey pitches. Has tons of big game experience. Don't know if he would be my first choice, but I would trust him in a big spot.
Felix Doubront- Obviously the least experienced, but Felix has been far and away the Sox most consistent starter the last two months. His 9-6, 3.97 is outstanding for a supposed #5 starter.
Ryan Dempster- 6-9, 4.77 has been a disappointment in his first year with the Sox. He will be jettisoned to the bullpen when Buchholz comes off the DL next week.
I don't believe the Sox have a true #1 (unless Buchholz comes back 100%), but they have four or five #2's or #3's, and that's what makes a potential postseason pitching rotation very interesting.
