MLB 2013 Season

I'm sorry, but when a batter is hit by a pitch that is actually over the plate, he should not be allowed to go to first under any circumstance.

Arod hit another home run last night and if he hits 9 more and ties Willie Mays he gets a 6 million dollar bonus.

I saw that. Pretty creepy if you ask me, but then, those beards are kind of creepy!

The Mets traded John Buck and Marlon Byrd on Byrd's T shirt night at Citi!!!!!

I had the Brewers audio overlay on their game at Pittsburgh early. Bob Uecker said a truck delivered all the t-shirts to Pittsburgh for them to give away. I'm assuming Uecker was joking but thought it would be funny if that really happened. :D

By rule they aren't supposed to get 1st base. It's a strike. But I have never seen it enforced.

Blink job:

From ESPN.com: Shane Victorino's 378-foot home run in the third inning left Fenway Park in 3.03 seconds. It's tied for the second fastest a home run has left a ballpark this season.
Victorino is batting .444 over his last 9 games. Even though his hits last night were against lefties and he would have been batting righty anyway, he probably won't bat left handed anytime soon... ;)

I see the Red Sox new thing is to tug on each others' beards when they score. OUCH!

Good thing they got rid of Nick Punto. His thing would have been to rip everyone's beards off.

Someone wrote that he should have his name changed to "and Nick Punto".

I remember when Don Drysdale was approaching the record for most consecutive innings without allowing a run, back in 1968, he hit a batter with the bases loaded but the home plate ump, Harry Wendlested, wouldn't give the batter first because he hadn't tried to move out of the way.

In the case I was taking about last night, the batter squared to bunt and the pitch hit him in the hand. His hand was over the plate. He pulled the bat back and the pitch was high above the strike zone, but it was over the plate.

If a batter hangs over the plate and is hit by a pitch over the plate, he should not be allowed to go to first.

The rule specifically mentions the pitch being in the strike zone:

Rule 6.08(b) The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when he is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (1) The ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (2) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball;
If the ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a strike, whether or not the batter tries to avoid the ball. If the ball is outside the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a ball if he makes no attempt to avoid being touched.

Thanks for the correction and the update. THAT BOY!!!!!!

He's still learning. He used to go balls out on everything. They told him there are times to go all out and times not to. They don't want him getting injured going all out on something there is no chance to get. Now he is confused of when to and when not to go all out.

There's conventional baseball strategy and there's common sense. It's understandable at his age to be lacking in the former, but not the latter....
