Third year? What does that mean?
The year that comes after the year of the second occurrence , and sometimes precedes the fourth... if there is one.

Derek Jeter back on the 15-day DL...
He might as well retire.
Red Sox ahead of Yankees 3-2 in the 5th. Here it is July 19th, and this is the Yankees first game at Fenway this season. The Sox have made two trips to the Bronx so far, and hold a 4-2 lead in the season series.

Heres an even odder tidbit.
The Tigers and the White Sox played thier 1st games of the SEASON last week.
The Dodgers and Giants have already played 4 series, two each at home.

That is strange. It also happened to the Red Sox and (Devil) Rays in 2006. I distinctly remember being on vacation in Las Vegas that year. I watching a Red Sox-Rays game in a sportsbook and the announcer said this is the first of 18 games between the teams.
I also remember a Red Sox-Blue Jays season series had 12 of 18 games played before June a few years back.
I think these quirks are only gonna get more frequent with the odd number of teams in both leagues. Heck, it was weird to see the Red Sox scheduled to play a two game series in Denver the last week of the season.

And whats with these 2 game series, they can't even call them a series with only 2 games being played ...
Again, I think you have to blame the odd number of teams in both leagues.
