MLB 2013 Season

I'm really starting to believe Adrian Gonzalez is not a "winner". He has been part of three late season collapses on three different teams (including the epic Red Sox collapse of 2011) and seems to always have nagging injuries. When he was on the Padres I coveted him, and I was ecstatic when the Red Sox acquired him. But my opinion on him has changed dramatically.

IMO, he is the prototype "paper tiger"....ie: he puts up great numbers, but at the end of the day you have nothing to show for it. Perhaps I'm all wet with this opinion, but I definitely think it warrants discussion.

I somewhat agree, I like him alot when he was in SD, when he went to Boston, I thought GREAT, he'll be a huge help.

Now what may come into discussion is the fact that while in SD he had No pressure to perform, of course he performed, but none of it was with a must win or a playoff or anything else on the line.

Those NL West standings are the reverse of what everyone predicted.

The more surprising thing is how well the Padres are doing. If the season ended now, I would give Bud Black the Manager of the Year award.

More injury news for the Yankees: Teixeira goes on the 15-day DL and Kevin Youkilis is out 10-12 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disk.

Jacoby Ellsbury, who is in his pre-free agency year, is fairly healthy and hitting .282 and projects to 70 stolen bases but only 2 homers and 49 RBI. Cripes, Matty Alou hit 2 or more homers in a season ten time. Ellsbury has an intriguing career ahead of him, but how much of a contract can any team commit to based on the way his power has dropped off?

His power hasn't dropped off. It was never there. The 32 he hit in 2011 was either a fluke or ped based. He doesn't have the swing for it, plus Fenway takes a few away each year. He has averaged 14/year. Without 2011 it would be 8.

I like Ellsbury, but I'd be very afraid of giving him a multi-year deal. I have the feeling that he will be Carl Crawford redux.

Felix Doubront is throwing a shutout through five. The Sox could really use Doubie going 7 plus tonight, with the doubleheader and the long rain delay crippling the bullpen.

He's now gone 7 plus, throwing only 83 pitches through seven complete and getting the leadoff hitter in the eighth inning to fly out on the first pitch.

This would be his first career complete game, but with a 1-0 score, if two runners reach, he'll be pulled regardless of how well he is throwing,

I could take his HR numbers if he was hitting, say .320.

How about them Toronto Marlins.. uh... Jays! Started off the year horribly but now 1 game below .500 and on a 8 game win streak despite a rash of injuries.

Cheers, K

This would be a good trade for the pirates.

He would be great for the Pirates. Imagine Marte, McCutchen and Stanton in the same outfield.

GREAT story. Do I want to trade Stanton? HELL NO! BUT, if there is no intention on his behalf to stay in Miami....then there is NO WAY in God's beautiful green Earth that the Marlins will just let him walk away for free. There have all kinds of trade rumors from the usual suitors:

....but since the team STILL has him under contract for the next couple of years, I think they are hoping Stanton sees the possibilities and he signs something long term. And when they get to the possible trade bridge, he is really gonna push for going to California...he is gonna push hard for that.

AND in the toughest division in baseball. The division amazes me sometimes. IF the Blue Jays win tomorrow, everyone in the division is AT LEAST playing .500 ball.

And since we are talking baseball, some of the rookies for the Marlins are playing better. They are not beating themselves...the teams they are losing to are just much better.

He goes 4 for 9 (.444) and his average drops to .474. How many go 4 for 9 and have their average go down?

Jose Iglesias.

His average was over .444 from April 1 through May 26 (first 28 at bats), and more recently from June 9 through June 15 (74-85 at bats), leaving him at .447 at the end of that stretch

He has gone two for nine since then, lowering his average to .426 but if he had instead gone four for nine, his average still would have dropped, to .4468.

In fairness to Mr Puig, his current total of five homers will likely rival Iglesias's eventual career total.
