MLB 2013 Season

As heard on ESPN this morning:

Last night, the Sox scored as many runs in one game as they've scored for John Lackey in his past nine starts.
I guess there is the advantage of playing in the NL. Kershaw is also a victim of poor run support, but he gets to bat and drives in the runs himself. :p Leads all pitchers in RBIs and those RBIs are often the difference in the game. I remember 3 starts in the last month alone where if he did not drive in the runs, he would have received a loss instead of a win.

With that said there are 8 pitcher with even worse run support than Lackey. The difference is they play for generally poor offensive teams. I think Lackey is the worst when it comes to difference in run support for him vs the other starters on his team.

...there are 8 pitcher with even worse run...[/URL]

I can see that. Steven Strasburg and Cliff Lee get a tenth or two fewer runs of support than does Lackey, but they play for teams that score more than a run a game fewer than do the Red Sox. The Red Sox score 5.1 runs per game, so when Lackey is not pitching, that must be up over five and a half runs per game.

Why?? Have they clinched already??
The same reason they have been doing so during the last couple of series, to keep the bench strong, to keep the regulars healthy, and to prevent them from tiring out. The long run is much more important than the short term clinching quickly. By resting them periodically throughout the remainder of the season, they stay more fresh than resting them only after they clinch. Plus, he wants them well rested when the play the games that matter more, those against Arizona.

All I can say is that it has worked so far. They are 5-1 since they starting doing this. The 1 loss they had was yesterday when they rested all of their key players except for Hanley, AJ, and Uribe, and started Volquez instead of someone in their starting 5. He usually just rest 1 or 2 each day, but yesterday he rested 5 of them.

Tigers should be in GREAT shape come playoff time then, Leyland has been resting regulars since day ... 2 I THINK he started his best lineup on Opening day, then again, he may have rested a few than too ...

God thats one thing I really hate about Leyland ... play your BEST 9 players every night.

Sparky Anderson did that in Cincy and it paid off well for him.

Nova has managed to throw 82 pitches in the first three innings, in spite of giving up just two runs. How's the Yankees long relief looking this year?

Dom Zimmer did it here also. He ran the same nine guys out there night after night, once in a blue moon there would be a Jack Brohamer, or Bob Montomery or Rick Miller sighting.

Koji Uehara, Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, Steven Drew, Jonny Gomes......is there any doubt that Ben Cherington will be named AL Executive of the Year?

There are no longer games played than those featuring the Yanks and Sox.

I put that squarely on Farrell's shoulders, one of his few mistakes of the season. IMO, Peavy got pulled too soon.

It's probably a case of playing for the future as opposed for the immediate game. In all fairness, their bullpen has been pretty good and reliable.

It wouldn't be a sox and yanks game if it took less than 4 hours to play 9 innings and then add at least another hour for extra innings.
