MLB 2013-2014 off-season moves

...not crazy...that's insane for the M's.

If the Yankees paid him that much I would not necessarily call it crazy or insane. They have a deeper payroll and can afford it without it affecting the signing of other players like it does Seattle, and Cano will put up better numbers in NY.

Cano will not come close to being the same player in Seattle. Ask Beltre. The ball does not carry their like it does in NY and he won't have the lineup protection. The M's are spending too much on one player that will not help as much as they think. They would be wiser building a deeper lineup with average to above average players for the same money.

If the M's already had a descent lineup and a deeper payroll, then I can understand overpaying Cano to compliment what they have.
Read this article this morning and it pretty much sums up exactly what I just stated in this post.

Hiring J-Z, or what ever the dude's name is, was the worst decision Cano every made. Cano needs to hire a real agent and not some talentless rapper. Someone who somehow becomes successful in the music field without the ability to sing or play an instrument, is either really good at selling a product to a bunch of fools or is a very good salesman. It is much more difficult to pull the wool over the eyes of professionals whose job it is to identify real talent. Those same "street" tatics he employs in the rap world does not work outside that world. That is probably the reason he pissed off Seattle execs so badly.

Either that, or he is so friggen genius that his little game will end up getting a lot more from the Yankees or another team. If so however, I wonder how much this will impact his relationship with other clients and teams?

Well, it's a Jay-Z group, it is not Jay-Z himself that is doing the negotiating. Either way, what Cano wants and what the Yankees are willing to pay is VERY far apart. He wants AT LEAST in the $290 mil range and the Yankees don't want to pay more than $189. The Rangers and Mariners are on the clock, though my source states the talks broke down last night in Seattle. My buddy told me the Mariners were willing to go up to $200 mil and he was not willing to budge under $250 mil.

Wow.

Robinson Cano and the Seattle Mariners have agreed to sign a 10-year, $240 million contract, a source told ESPNdeportes.com Friday.

The player and his agents met Thursday night in Seattle with the Mariners' top executives and the team made an offer he couldn't refuse, the source added.

The source said Cano will return to Seattle on Sunday and will undergo a physical on Monday to complete what would be the third largest contract in history, tied with the one that Albert Pujols signed with Los Angeles Angels three years ago.

Crazy crazy deal... too much for too long and Seattle still wont be anywhere near making the playoffs next year or in the near future.
Am calling it now, expect Cano to be traded within 3 years and the Mariners eating a chunk of the contract.

You NEVER know. When the Red Sox traded away all those players recently to the Dodgers. Did ANYONE outside of Boston think they would World Series champs THIS soon? Nope.

I don't know, if this report is true, they may have been doing their homework for a little while now:

MLBTR's Jeff Todd recently examined the future payroll obligations of all 30 Major League teams -- a study that showed the Mariners to be one of the best-equipped teams to accommodate a mega-deal of this nature. The only other player that the Mariners have signed beyond the 2014 season is ace Felix Hernandez, meaning that despite the historic nature of this deal, the M's still have an annual commitment of roughly $50MM to the years in which the Cano and Hernandez deals overlap (assuming a straight $24MM annual salary for Cano).

Here is an interesting note about the Marlins signing :

Not only do Saltalamacchia and his family reside in Wellington, Fla. (less than 70 miles from Marlins Park), the state has no income tax, meaning the Twins might have had to outspend the Marlins by a significant margin to win out.

Many in here, some are no longer around and some that have remained awfully quiet, have stated that Florida's lack of state taxes does not play a roll in negotiations when it comes to the signing of free agents in any professional sports. When you are talking 5-8% of tens of millions of dollars, you damn straight it becomes a factor.

Maybe.. but in the end of the day, its still Seattle which isnt a prime destination for free agents.

The only thing they have to their disadvantage is being so damn far away from everything. But when are talking more than a quarter of a BILLION DOLLARS, the seems to make things a little more comfortable.
