MLB 2012 Postseason

I wanted to watch the game, but there is absolutely a ton of good programming on Sunday night's these days: The Walking Dead, Revenge, Dexter and The Mentalist. Anyway, I'll hit records and hope now to stay up too late.

What? No "Homeland"?!

Monday's Playoff Schedule

Cardinals (Carpenter) at Giants (Vogelsong)- NLCS Game 2- 8:00pm ET (FOX)

Once again, we are seeing that home field advantage don't mean diddly-squat.
I think it plays less of role in baseball than in any other sport in actuality, with the exception of the fact that you get last AB.

Home team winning percentage:

MLB 53.9%
NHL 55.7%
NFL 57.3%
NBA 60.5%

One would think home-field will be much more of a determining factor in baseball than in other sports since, unlike other sports, baseball fields are all different. Organizations build their teams based on their fields.

For those of you who may not have been aware of this, Scutaro is a damn good ballplayer. I had mixed feelings when the Red Sox traded him in the off season last year. I understand their reasoning. They were trying to slip under the luxury tax threshold and figured that they could get adequate performance out of Aviles for $5 million a year less, plus at age 36, there is always a concern that a shortstop that age is playng on borrowed time, but he can be a middle infielder on a championship team.

Tuesday's Playoff Schedule

Yankees (Hughes) at Tigers (Verlander)- ALCS- Tigers lead series 2-0- 8:00pm ET (TBS)

Anyone care to comment on the Matt Holliday slide into Scutaro at 2nd base? As a Giants fan and having watched and heard the local RSN's coverage (including Holliday's post game interview and a clip of Holliday taking out Starlin Castro in the regular season) I'm heavily leaning towards dirty play. But given my bias, I'd like to hear what neutral spectators or even Cards fans thought.

It just seemed like the slide was way too late, beginning it at the bag is simply too late. He landed on Scutaro instead of sliding into him. Throw in the arms extended laterally and rolling up his leg and I can't see how he can claim he had no intent to injure.

The Castro take down from earlier in the season just magnified my feelings on this not being a clean play. It just shows that this isn't his first ugly attempt to do whatever it takes to break up the double play. I hadn't seen the clip before, but I honestly can't believe play like that is allowed (he slid into second sideways and kicks at Castro's legs to try to break up the double play- his cleats make holes in Castro's socks).

And yes, I know the rule says a slide is legal so long as the runner can touch the base during it, but these two were both just ugly ugly slides that could have seriously hurt the defenders.

I posted earlier, (right after the ALCS teams were decided) that the Yankees were not pitching Sabathia till game 4, remember Verlander goes in game 3, that got changed to Sabathia pitching against Verlander in Game 3, now that time has come, it looks like the Yankees have changed thier mind again and are pitching Sabatia in Game 4, not 3.

This is an advantage of some sort for the Yanks as they won't waste (?) Sabathia against Verlander (provided Verlander pitches like he did in the series against Oakland (complete game, 4 hits, 0 runs).

This will probably work in NY's advantage, however, he will face Scherzer instead ....

So the Yankees being down 3-0 is an advantage?

How do you think I feel with Pagan hitting home runs and what Beltran is doing this postseason?

Beltran SHOULD have been a Marlin BEFORE Reyes. He would have been cheaper, better for the line-up and would have taken care of an OF need. BUT...shoulda, woulda, coulda and if my aunt had ballz she'd be my uncle...

I think it's a smart move for NY not to matchup Sabathia against Verlander on short rest. They'll just have to hope for crappy weather since JV has had touble when it rains and there are significant deplays.

Anyway, my brother has a ticket for me for Game 5, but I'm hoping I won't use it since I couldn't reserve a flight...and I don't feel like making the drive once again on such short notice. Anyway, if the Tiger lose tonight I will be throwing my bags into the truck and driving up after work tomorrow night. If they win, there is no way I can wait on the outcome of Wednesday nights game so I'll be back at work on Thursday. We shall see.

Always nice to see the GOOD things NFL players do
