MLB 2011 Season

53-25 projects to 110-52 over a full season, a near record pace which is remarkable when you consider that they get NOTHING out of right field, that Crawford hit about .200 for the first two months of the season and got injured once he started hitting, that they lost their shortstop Lowrie to injury, and every starting pitcher has missed starts, with one lost for the season and with most of us wishing another one was also. And Papelbon's ERA is still over 4 runs per 9 innings pitched!!

Among the pleasant surprises is the fact that the offensive output at catcher is actually somewhat above the league average, currently projecting to 20 homers, 80 RBI and 76 runs scored.
I lifted this from the uber-Red Sox fan site, Sons of Sam Horn....it's a pretty remarkable stat:
It is pretty incredible if you just look at the OBP of the starting lineup. The league average is .321. Varitek is at .333, Saltalamacchia .320, Scutaro .328, Drew .331. The other 2/3 of the lineup looks like this:

Gonzalez 412
Youkilis 397
Pedroia 395
Ortiz 391
Ellsbury 374
Reddick 455

Runners are constantly on base. Especially when McDonald isn't playing.

Impressive, especially with the messed up rotation they have been working with.

Yes, but luckily both Lester and Beckett (the #1 and #2 starters) are saying they're fine. Lackey has been battling personal issues and has been beyond awful, but had a very impressive start yesterday (hopefully a sign that he's turning it around). Obviously, Dice-K is done for the year (and most of next year) after having Tommy John surgery. The big concern, IMO, is Clay Buchholz. He went to get a second opinion on his back the other day, and is still reporting no improvement. He's a very solid #3 starter, and would obviously give the Sox a big boost in the second half if he could come back.

So, it's currently Lester and Beckett and PRAY for RAIN !

Same goes for the Tigers, it's Justin Verlander and Scherzer and PRAY for RAIN !

Doesn't exactly have the same ring to it, does it? ;)

Ohhh... I don't know :

Beckett 8-3 2.27
Lester 10-4 3.31

Verlander 12-4 2.15
Scherzer 10-4 4.69

Scherzer has pitched the same amount of innings that the RedSox pitchers have and J.V. has pitched a LOT more, by about 40 innings.

Tigers have more strike outs J.V. 147, M.S. 96, J.L.110 and J.B. 94.
The walks between the 4 pitchers are about the same.

So, .......

Doesn't it ? :D

Marlins are playing some decent baseball....FINALLY. They have won 6 straight and 11 out of 14. We maybe coming out of the cellar sooner than I thought.

EDIT: The 4 hotest teams in baseball in the last 10 are "evil empire lite":p...the Red Sox, 9-1 and then the Rangers, Angels and Marlins at 8-2.

I know nothing of Scherzer, but that record has a "Dice-K" look to it. If he maintains the 4.69 ERA for the rest of the season, then he will be no better than a .500 pitcher for the rest of the season.

Yes, his ERA is higher than you'd like but he has had good run production as well, that has helped his record clearly, however, I believe he's gotten things turned around in the last outing or two, we'll see soon enough, IF he can stabilize his pitching and the era starts to drop it will be a lot of fun in the second half .....
Ps, also need Porcello to start pitching better.]

The Tigers could be much further ahead in the standing IF they had scrapped the Coke a Starter campaign when it went south.
They did the same thing with Dontrelle when it was clear that it wasn't working and ended up losing the division by a game.

Also, I'd LOVE to see the Tigers go back to a 4 man rotation.

Great for baseball and the city of Pittsburgh! Even if they don't make the playoffs, ownership has stood pat on trading good young talent and the seeds planted are baring fruit! The Pirates are definitely heading in the right direction!
