Launch Predictions 10/10

The only reason I'll be checking tomorrow is the slim hope that tp31 bursts back to life with SciFi-HD (MGM would be icing) as part of the mix and the even slimmer hope that they convert some or all of the new PPV to movie plexs.

OK back to my meds. :)

They'll get there but not soon I would suspect.

The percentage of mpeg4 HD subscribers who also have premium movie packages is a lot lower than mpeg4 HD subscribers who can receive say USA.

Putting a channel up that 85% of the mpeg 4 crowd can see makes more business sense than using the bandwidth for a channel 15% can see. Even if the channel in question barely runs HD. It's a matter of public acceptance.

98.327% of statistics are made up.

According to the wiki, HBO has 40 million subscribers, or roughly half of all cable subscribers. Give that HD is still a premium service (especially at $20/mo on Dish) it would certainly be a reasonable hypothesis to assume their is a strong positive correlation between HD subscribers and premium channel subscribers.

Dish gains $0 by adding an HD channel to the standard lineup (sure, they have to keep up/ahead of DirecTV for bragging/marketing rights, but other than that, no IMMEDIATE financial gain). However, they have an opportunity to immediately gain additional HBO/Showtime/Starz subscribers (each paying at least $10 each) by adding the additional channels of those in HD.

I agree Blackjack.....
I would consider Starz if they went and picked up all of them in HD.....

I disagree. The more standard HD channels added the more attractive they are to new subscribers.

Well Direct added four new HD Channel which two of them Dish has had for awhile now so wonder if we will see anything today from Dish.

I would love to see FX HD added. I don't watch any of the shows on there but they do show some pretty good movies. I've watched all the Spiderman and XMen movies in the last year or so on there.

That being said, I kind of doubt we will see it today. Maybe CNN and TWC but that is probably it.

Yeah USA Network,Bravo,CNN, and maybe Sci-FI channel might be some we could see.

I agree too. I have Starz with Dish because they have a better offering than what I could get from my cable company (I subscribe to them too). I carry my Showtime, HBO, Cinemax subscriptions with cable because they have better offerings. Dish adding premium HD channels that I don't get with cable may lead me to change my other premiums to Dish. Adding Starz multichannels in HD specifically would get me to retain my Starz subscription with Dish. I'll go with who has the best mix of multichannels, HD, On Demand, between Dish and cable. Price is secondary. If Dish offered all the Starz multichannels in HD and cable offered none like they do now, I'll pay a higher price to get Starz through Dish. Although I think they are both priced at $12.99/mo right now with Dish having 7 or 8 feeds, including one in HD, while cable has only five feeds with no HD.

Agreed and those percentages were for conversation only.

I still stand by what I typed. I would be surprised if over 15% of folks who have mpeg4 gear have a movie package.

That's kind of an incredulous statement, don't you think? If 50% of all cable subscribers on the whole have HBO and (presumably slightly more have so movie package or another) why are high-def subscribers different in a negatively correlated way?

Would I need 2 dishes?
