Is there enough Bandwidth to add espn2 HD, Starz HD, etc.?

I am with BHN Central FL (Orlando) and eagerly awaiting espn2 HD (holding my breath) and I know others would like the HD versions of Starz, Cinemax, etc.

Do they have sufficient bandwidth to add these channels?

since all channels are digital now, i believe that should have freed up bandwidth, but don't quote me on it! as for any new hd, i don't expect anything until sometime next year. in the 2 years, on and off, that i have had bhn, they have added 3 new hd channels......a&e, espn, and universal. that's piss poor, in my opinion!!

All channels on a digital box are digital now (that isn't going all digital just) as they are now doing what is called advanced digital simulcasting which takes more bandwidth not less. Either way I can say yes they have enough bandwidth to add many more HD channels and they also have the option of switched video technology if needed to create more HD bandwidth.

hmm, we've been hearing that since very early this year, beside espn2hd.

don't get me wrong, i have nothing against bhn, just wish they would add more hd to remain competative with directv and dish.

oh, wait, i do have a problem......no fox sports net florida.....hence, no marlins games. boo!!

FSN would be a great addon to the already powerful BHN lineup. Although recently BHN has been focusing on the Spanish lineup in oralndo as their is a huge population here. with the addition of Esponal on demand. they also recently added International movies on-demand. with over 22 HD channels but only around 10% HD penetration they have to focus on "what will impact the most customers" not what will impact a few hundred people only who are obbseesed with TV technology :p

I can't speak for Orlando, but in the Tampabay area, they are currently running at 750mhz and they will be moving to a system 860mhz very shortly - thus adding 18 more QAMs which will give them all sorts of possibilities.

If memory serves correctly, the system in Tampa was built out for 1000mhz, but the plant was the limiting factor at 750mhz.

pardon me, i'm not obsessed with tv technology. i just want to know why bhn can't provide the same channels, especially in hd, that either verizon or comcast does....for about the same price or less.

i'm really getting tired of lame excuses. i'm getting tired of being lied too! if it wasn't for the fact that a few of your csr's and supervisors, plus a few technicians actually care about their customers, i'd still be pulling my hair out with directv!

Well the orlando system currently is installing the new 1ghz BDR (split) nodes but before the entire system is upgraded want be for along time. we started setting up the 870 gear gainmaker stuff but that didnt last long before we started using 1 gig.

I felt the same way as you (except for the price issue - as my BHN video bill is much lower than what I know others pay for Verizon, Comcast, Dish or Directv).

I felt there must be something wrong that BHN was not offering as many HD Channels as Comcast.

One day I sat down and mapped out every channel on Comcast's Atlanta system which I think is a great Comcast System. They pass everything literally at full bitrate - and have Cinemax, StarzHD, MHD - of interest to you would be the ESPN2HD and NFL stuff.

I wanted to compare that 750mhz system to the Tampabay 750mhz system.

What I found after several hours of mapping it out really surprised me as I was convinced someone was wasting bandwidth in the Brighthouse system that was causing the shortage.

This is apples to apples with the Tampa and Atlanta System, but I am sure Orlando is similar.

On the Comcast Atlanta system, they had in HD with no equivalent on BHN:

1) ESPN2HD
2) MHD
3) CinemaxHD
4) STARZHD
5) Local MyNetworkTV HDTV Affiliate

On the TampaBay system, in HD with no equivalent on Comcast Atlanta:
1) Local PBS HD Affiliate
2) A&E HD
3) INHD2
4) HDNET
5) HDNET Movies
6) Universal HD

On top of that, there were 6 4:3 DTV multicast channels (PBS stations multicasts) that were not covered on Comcast.

Now, BHN is not passing through the locals at full bitrate - so its still not apples to apples - but I was surprised to see there was 1 more Full HD Channel on BHN than Comcast.

As I laid out the rest of the system, other things because evident.

Unlike BHN, Comcast does not pass the West Coast feeds of any Showtime Channels saving 7 SD QAM channels. Same with the 2 West Coast The Movie Channel channels - thus 9 SD QAM Channels savings. They do not include Cinemax Thriller Max West, HBO Comedy West or HBO Zone West - thus a total savings of 12 QAM Channels.

If BHN would drop those 12 West Coast feeds (remember that the East Coasts feeds are still available - these are just 3 hours later), BHN would have the Bandwidth to add 2 HD Channels - say CinemaxHD, ESPN2HD, MHD or STARZHD. (My understanding that the STARZHD problem is they make the MSO offer Starz InDemand which BHN does not have).

What makes dropping the 12 West Coast feeds an even more no brainer is 1) the advent of DVRs and 2) all the HBO/Showtime/Cinemax On Demand that BHN offers that I am not sure if Comcast Atlanta offers or not. Why run a West Coast 3 hour delay on this stuff if its available On Demand?

Yes, there were SD channels that Comcast had that BHN didn't - but it went both ways. BHN had Sleuth, CNBC World, Fuel (on the Sports Tier), some Nick channels and Disney too - Comcast had some additional MTV/VH1/BET, NFL Net (should be on the sports tier) and foreign language channels.

Comcast does not have dedicated NFL HD Channel and makes a place for the 8 games a year - just as BHN could do on 650 HD Sports Channel in Tampa if they ever put the NFL NET on the Sports Tier.

The PPV looked very similar - it appears BHN probably has more On Demand stuff than Comcast. BHN had Howard Stern and it doesn't appear Comcast does.

So the bottom line, I expected to see something really wrong with BHN and point to it and say, "see, why can't you do that" I was instead very surprised at how they have more HD stuff than Comcast - even if I did not agree with all the selections.

No as for D* and E*, BHN does offer more HD channels than D* - again, we can debate the selection - but as Directv is only 14 - BHN has them beat.

E* has more HD-LITE channels - but only the 2 HD Movie Channels of 148W (that I suspect I am the only one in Florida receiving - and I am using a 1.2M dish for the extra headroom) look as good as what I can get from BHN via my cablecard.

interesting, as you have put forth a lot of effort with your comparisons.

if i haven't already said it, i really don't have major issues with bhn. the hd pq beats what i was getting with d* and i don't have to play csr roulette with them. most of the time, they take very good care of me and work within my budget.

obviously, i'm a sports fanatic and i'm not happy with the obvious, no espn2hd, no fsn florida hd (for the games, like bhn does with sun sports), and no nfl network hd for the games.

i think they've been slow to add new hd channels. and then there was the contract dispute they had with (formerly) sunshine network a few years ago when there were no magic games broadcast for almost 2 months. i didn't miss anything at the time because i switched to dish.

granted, no one system is perfect and there will be complaints.

I was really determined to have it all laid out and be able to point my finger at it and say, THERE! why can't you do this!!! Unfortunately for me, I couldn't do that at the end of several hours.

If you are curious, this is the way it shook out:

Bottom line, I do think it would be smart to get rid of the West Coast Feeds for Cinemax, HBO, Showtime, Starz etc especially as they could all be covered by on demand channels - and it should free up enough QAM space for more HD.

For example, I would not sub to Cinemax now - but get rid of the West Coast Feeds and put on Cinemax HD and I certainly would sub. I am sure there are others in the same boat I am in.

As you need a digital stb for Cinemax anyway, most of the material could be seen On Demand.

Check the channels unique to BHN - most are there.

fanatic, those bhn channels you list aren't central florida, are they? i notice fox sports atlantic, central and pacific......we don't have them here in central florida, although i wish we did. it isn't fsn florida but its better than nothing!

Well tampa and orlando are 2 seperate divisions apart of the "florida group" and each division is responsible for its "local" style programming to an extent. In oralndo they have been focused alot of spanish channels because of our HUGE spanish population I think it was near 15-20% or more of our customer base was spanish speaking so thats a large portion. In tampa its a big sports city with the bucs and what not, orlando has never been know as a sport area.. so the focus hasnt been on sports but rather old people and spanish people... so if you sports nuts want your sports then you have to keep bothering them to make yourself heard.

Actually, I would disagree and say that Orlando is a bigger Sports Town - or was at one point with the Magic.

Does anyone really look at the any of the Tampa Sport's teams seriously - or just lucky.

Regardless, you are correct that those channels are in Tampa - in the Sports Pack - where NFL should be if added.

As you stated Orlando Hispanic 12+ is estimated at 22.8% (and remember that Anglos are the minority in K-6 now in Florida, so that number is most likely low) and Tampa is 12.7% 12+ (same disclaimer), so 10% lower, thus I can believe more a focus on Spanish.

The other thing I would point out was up until several years ago, I would classify the Hispanic Population in Tampa as very assimilated - only in the last few years has it begun to really separate. Even though the Hispanics have a longer history in Tampa than Orlando, they were not as assimilated in Orlando - probably because of how long they had been a part of Tampa (and the fact that up until several years ago the population was only 5%).

And finally, remember those Fox Networks are College (I believe), not pro.

BHN threw the Sports Pack and on Deman with my HD Pack for some reason 3 or 4 years ago or I would never subscribed to either. I've punched past both tiers only a few times and never stopped.
