High Def Disc unit sales - The Digital Bits

:o

OK, so I am surprised. :D

Over estimated BD owners appetite for those disappearing Paramount titles, and under estimated HD DVD owners continued appetite to "Dine in Hell!"

(A line from the movie "300" -the 2nd top selling title overall, and the top HD DVD.

Top 10 Titles:

300 BD 100
300 HD 74.72
Wild Hogs 48.05
Black Hawk Down 31.35
Perfect Stranger 25.60
PE BD 24.95
Casino Royale 22.18
Disturbia BD 16.02
Shooter BD 15.98

Planet Earth HD 15.80

Top 5 Blu-ray
300 100
Wild Hogs 48.05
Black Hawk Down 31.35

Top 5 HD DVD
300 100
Planet Earth 21.15
Bourne Identity 19.68
Hot Fuzz 17.09
Shooter 15.43

The numbers next to the titles is the sales ratio. For example, in the Top 10 titles, for every 100 copies of "300" on Blu-ray, 74.72 copies were sold on HD DVD - a pretty high number considering in the first week "300" was released, BD outsold HD DVD almost 2 to 1. ;)

BD carried the week, but enough HD DVD sales to push the YTD figures up a percentage. :)

Yep. But there were no new Blu-ray releases that week, were there? None listed at High Def Digest. I suspect next week's figures will be about the same. And the release of Transformers next month should give HD DVD a big boost. But there are a lot of good releases coming for Blu-ray, too.

I've looked over the release schedules for the remainder of the year for Blu-ray and HD DVD. How likely is it that more titles would be released in either format this year, than have already been announced?

I think Paramount will have some more releases to announce after their HD DVD 'deal', but they will be catalog releases, and probably some more catalog releases from Warner, Sony & Universal. But, these are the biggies.

Percentages. 61% of the week's sales went to Blu-ray, 39% to HD DVD. The second set is just to show how many HD DVDs sold for every 100 Blu-rays sold.

Bwa ha ha.......

Time for Sony execs to take down that Bushian Mission Accomplished banner they have been spouting off about since 1Q2007.....

Wait until Transformers hits in two weeks.....

Knocked Up sold a ton I bet, Ditto for the Heroes box set......

Although you guys should bounce back in the next report due to Fantastic Four 2...

54 to 46? What happened?

"Knocked Up" was released, with very little released in Blu-ray. Sales tend to be dominated each week by what was newly released. [Plus, it was a very slow week for sales. ] - DISREGARD COMMENT IN BRACKETS- Sales for week not actually known at this time.

When "Transformers" is released on HD DVD, the HD DVD camp might outsell the Blu-ray camp for the first time this year. Shrek 3 should also be good for HD DVD. But there are many more Blu-ray exclusive major titles coming thru year's end, such as:
Cars
Ratatouille
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Simpsons Movie
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Meet the Robinsons
Die Hard Quadrilogy
Spider-Man trilogy
The Day After Tomorrow
Independence Day
I, Robot

So the year as a whole, fourth quarter especially, will end with Blu-ray having about the same lead as at the beginning of the year, if not a bit larger.

Funny how when Blu-ray sales ratios are in the 60's it's "overwhelming" (never claimed by Navychop AFAIK), but when it dips down into the mid to lower 50's, it's a "very slow week for sales".

And, actually, I haven't seen any sales numbers for last week, just percentages - what were the actual sales numbers showing it was so slow last week?

Here's the Top 10 Titles -

And let me throw in a little "history" -

Sony declares Blu-ray winner in high-def format war
By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 2/9/2007

Sony is so confident that Bishop said the studio plans to begin marketing the format to consumers as the winner of the format war.

“The message that we’re going to put out to the consumer now is, now it is safe to make a choice,” he said. “No more fence-sitting is needed.”

and -

"There are no Americans at the Baghdad Airport!"

- last known Public Statement from the Iraqi Information Minister, aka "Baghdad Bob".

But don't you find it a bit telling when you see that 300 in BD is selling about twice as many as the HD-DVD equivalent. Also, We Are Marshall is in the top 10 in BD, but no HD-DVD. Its those numbers that will really determine how this format war is moving.

Upon reflection, I'll concede on the "very slow week." That was based on (unsubstantiated) comments I've read and the fact that the YTD figure did not change. But with the first 3 quarters gone, I suppose it would take a considerable surge either way for a single week or two to move the YTD figure.

Post amended.

Funny how the news seems to call an election that's 55:45 a "landslide" but in the real world, it takes a whole lot more.
