Can anyone tell me is there is a way to get a new customer promotional deal as an existing customer? I just bought an HDTV, and saw a sweet deal through directstartv.com , but it is only for new customers. I called directv and tried to get them to match it, & told them that if they didn't that I would cancel, but I got nowhere! Any suggestions? Thanks.

almost 7 years

Just say "Cancel service" at the voice prompt & providing you have no contract commitment their 'retention' department should be able to offer you some type of comparable price resolution if not better than what you want. Shoot for the stars here because you hold the power here. Just be prepared for a new commitment with DTV though that is also negotiable if your past payment & sub history is excellent.

An existing customer will almost never get what a new customer would. They may make some offerings based on the history and value of your account (think how many $$ you spend each month, that's what they think about).

If you cancel, you won't be able to just sign up as a new customer, they check off address, phone, name, social, etc (looking for spouses too).

Ask what they can do for you, I'm sure they can help a 7 year customer.

Postscript: After dealing w/ several csr's, retention, and finally the Office of the President, here is what I ended up w/:
*Free HD satellite install
*Free HD DVR
*Free HD access for one year
*3 mos. free of HBO & Showtime

Not quite what I was shooting for, but, all-in-all, not too bad.

I wanted to upgrade to a HD/DVR and after logging into my account on the website I found they wanted $199 for the receiver which I didn't want to pay, so I called them to ask if I would have to return the receivers if I cancelled service, I was switching over to dish, the woman rep. offered to take $10 off my bill for 6 months, which I thought was a joke after being a subscriber in good standing for over 4 years. So I cancelled service and ordered dish, ( worst mistake ever), when I called back to cancel Directv the woman tells me she could have upgraded my receiver to the HD/DVR for free and given me a year of HD for free!!! Thanks for the offer but a little too late. I got a good deal from Dish and am paying less than I was with Directv when I didn't even have HD. Now after 2 weeks and my wife telling me everyday she hates dish, I contacted direct tv and re-ordered it with the HD/DVR which they gave me for free. Bottom line is to call more than once and speak to different rep's, as I learned the hard way you CANget a better deal, if you don't get what you want the first time call back and ask again.
