Florida Legislature does not pass Dolphins Stadium renovations, CEO states Dolphins future "clearly

I said swept off the table, as in it was an incentive to get this done. If the community won't support the team I wonder what reactions will be if they find themselves without one in the future.

There were never guarantees of a Super Bowl, but you can take it to the bank that had there been renovations they would have hosted 2-3 over the next dozen opportunities, likely paying for any taxpayer contributions and then some by themselves.

Miami has been one of the cities that gets a Super Bowl fairly regularly, that appears to be at an end. These developments and losing the latest awarded Super Bowls ensures this will be among the longest droughts between big games in southern Florida.

I am willing to bet money the Dolphins will never leave. This had NOTHING to do with the team because the fans LIKE the Stadium in its current condition. You know full well that MAYBE 20% of the local fans go to the Super Bowl when it is played in your city. This had more to do with hookg up execs and sponsors that dish out money for the league. I know you might try the ole, "money for the local economy" ...but if the NFL REALLY cared about local economies in these cities and states, they would encourage the teams to pull a AMAZING PR move... pay for the stadium/renovations yourself.

THAT was a good ole fashion BS move by the NFL to either persuade Ross to pay it all himself(something he would never do) or to fool the voting public to THINK they would get it and vote for the renovations...and you call tell they were falling for it.

But considering what the Marlins did... can you blame anyone?
Of course not.
I would've loved to hear what some of these folks who are beating this idea to death would've said if indeed the proposal went through and not receive a super bowl.

None of that really makes sense, the Super Bowl benefits more than the 10s of thousands that actually attend the game. It's a nearly half billion dollar bonus for a city with a capable host stadium and economy, the citizens and local government of Miami has declined to compete for that event in the future is all.

Will be interesting to see what happens, next. The Dolphins don't have a long term lease and Ross says the team isn't for sale, but they become one of the best positioned teams to be purchased and moved to LA or another location now.

Stephen, dolphins aren't going anywhere. If they end up going up to pompano that's not an issue imo. LA, I just don't see it but as you said we'll have to see what happens next.

They did not decline to compete. Ownership from another franchise has left a sour taste in politicians mouths. You do not understad because you do not live here and seen what has happened. The Marlins ownership not only screwed it up for the Dolphins, but they screwed the Jags, Bucs, Magic, Rays, Lightning and the Panthers. EVERY single request for public funds that goes up to Tallahassee will be looked that with an incredibly doubtful eye.

The timing for the Dolphins could NOT have been worse....and reality, it was Goodell that pushed this crap just because it rained on Prince during a Super Bowl half time show. THAT is where it all started.

So what happens if it snows in New Jersey, no more Super Bowl's for East Rutherford?

Heck, we still haven't gotten another Super Bowl in Atlanta because of a freak ice storm. And now we have to replace our "antiquated" 24 year old dome to get another one. Meanwhile New Orleans has no problem with the really old Super Dome.

still short sighted if they lose the team it will cost $$$$$$$$$$ to build a new one. and they will want a New one to come back. pro sports are force feed to them(FLA) anyway imo

All that is is context, and the reason they've decided to not compete for future Super Bowls indefinitely. They have the hard part taken care of, they are in southern Florida and have an NFL team. Really the venue is the easiest part of the equation. Billions in revenue over the next couple decades from those events alone, almost literally low hanging fruit. You're right, I don't know the history, but it doesn't change the above.

Easy to say in theory, but not practical since the horse is already out of the barn on that. There's always a community that recognizes the value of a major, professional sports franchise and will be willing to foot part or much of the cost to get it done. Does it make it right?? Probably not, but as long as there are cities desperate for a team, it's the way it is.

After Houston lost the Oilers to Nashville, the city created a Sports Authority to develop and build new sports venues, of which Minute Maid Park and Reliant Stadium were part. The public financing was $194M for Reliant Stadium, which comes from hotel occupancy and short-term car rental taxes. For that $194M investment, a 2003 study showed that Reliant Stadium is responsible for almost $323M in direct annual spending in the local economy. This doesn't include special events like the Final Four, Super Bowl, etc...

Bingo...and there is the hypocrisy of Goodell and the NFL. JUST SAY we want to give other cities a chance. He had to throw the upgrades that basically requires a dome or a roof covering those watching the game.

You just don't get how polluted the government and fans are after what has been pulled down here and unless you have lived here... Will never know.

Will leave it at that.

And at no point was any of those franchised were torn apart after a successful season a year after (a) winning world championships in separate years, (b) promised that they would complete financially with other teams and (c) told they were losing money and could not afford the current best player and therefore had to trade them(last years triple crown winner Miguel Cabrera) then come to find out they WERE making money(luxury tax or whatever it is called) later revealed in leaked documents.

This town and the states politicians are muddied waters now, this will take a while to get over. HOW LONG after they lost the Oilers was this authority formed?

I think we understand the political climate down there, but you have to also recognize the economic value most sports franchises have to the community. If the Miami-area officials don't, someone else might. Time will tell if the gamble was worth it, I guess....

I COMPLETED understand HOW much that brings to Miami....believe me, I WENT to the Super Bowl that Prince got rained on. It ALMOST never rains in Miami from December to March because that is when it's our dry season. Miami recognizes because one a couple of cities have had more Super Bowls than Miami. You add the World Series(2), you add the National Championships in college football and the Heat runs in the last 13 yearsfor the NBA Finals...they know.

....BUT, the NCAA has NEVER said to the city that they need fix the football stadium or you will not get a NCG, or the NBA or MLB...none.
