Florida Legislature does not pass Dolphins Stadium renovations, CEO states Dolphins future "clearly

...and make the tax increase not permanent as part of the legislation. Seems like an easy one to fix
and far to easy to extend again, like they're doing in Atlanta with replacing the "ancient" Georgia Dome, and extending the "temperary" motel/hotel tax to pay for it.

Forgive me if someone else already responded to this, but it was the Buffalo Braves ?who became the then San Diego, now Los Angeles Clippers.

No, the Buffalo Braves became the Boston Celtics and the Boston Celtics became the San Diego Clippers in 1978. That has been well known to "insiders" for decades. The league doesn't even deny it. It just downplays it. Tommy Heinsohn's Boston Celtics deferred compensation payments were issued by the Clippers in the early 1980s.

That is close to right. read the wikipedia article on th old Braves. The owners traded teams (and many players) and then the Buffalo Braves moved to San Diego. One of the biggest motivating factors was declining attendance in Buffalo and the desire of the Celtics owner to own a team in California but the knowledge that the league would never actually let him relocate the Celtics.. The complicated move solved both situations.

You don't rally need to be an "insider" to know this. Just old like I am. It was all done out in the open.

Go tell that to the tax payers of Miami.

The only way I would ever agree to fund a stadium on the public dime... the state/city gets a cut of all revenues (tickets, parking, concessions) until the stadium is paid off.
Multimillion dollar franchises shouldnt be crying poor...and the economic spinoff argument is just a cheap cop out.

Its like me saying, dont move Steve you're a good neighbor you bring up the prestige of the street..... here's a free house!

Throw in the fact that if I heard correctly this morning, he gave a charity close to 2 billion.... Well, tells me, that on the surface, he can afford the renovations himself.

it was more like teams changing owners. Dave Cowens & Cedric Maxwell were the faces of the Celtics and that did not change. being old we watched most of those games in a news paper (remember them)box score as tv games were rare as____ :popcorn

If he can give 2 billion to charity AND buy a chain bank, he has MORE than enough to pay for the remodeling.

sure he has money but he is not stupid.
looks like they get 5 Super Bowls...value 2.5 to 3> billion dollars for a 200 mil investment. even if those numbers are split in half........ a good in investment something a politician could not ever see.

Likely as a result of the failure to get some kind of renovation deal in place, Miami lost to both San Francisco and then Houston for Super Bowls 50 and 51 today.

“It has to be a public-private partnership,” Ross said. “I think the percentage that I’m going to put up is probably more than anybody else has ever put up, and I’m willing to do that, but I think we’re going to have to work together.”

Ross noted that South Florida is a great Super Bowl host, but the league simply won’t put another game there if the stadium doesn’t get taxpayer financed renovations. He said that everyone in South Florida who wants another Super Bowl will need to go back to the drawing board to see how they can figure out a way to get public financing.

Who owns the stadium? Who else uses it, for what? Where do the concession and other revenues go to? Who pays for maintenance?

Not all sports franchises bring any real money into the area. With the high cost of tickets and parking, and for some the gas to get there and back, people are not spending money in the town or city once they get to the venue. Pride aside, financially it isn't anywhere near a slam dunk that the State/local government will benefit from a sports franchise. Boston, New York, Philly, are big exceptions as is a few other locations. None of the Florida teams have tradionally been a big money generator for the community, though now the Heat may be. There may be a few very local businesses that get traffic due to sporting events. The Magic, Rays, Panthers, etc.. all underperform in that category. The Bucs can't even fill the stadium enough to lift the broadcast blackouts, let alone generate much money for Tampa.

Navychop asks the good quesitons. If the community is going to continue using tax dollars to assist in paying for stadiums, what it their "take" going to be of profits?

i just don't see the logic in investing into a stadium that will become outdated again in 5 years and will be over 30 years old. besides the fact this guy has incredibly deep pockets.....

If you'd rather he move you'd probably have to build an entire new stadium to get a team back.

I'd rather him worry about winning games.

Wins come and go, this is all about a much bigger picture. It's likely Miami just lost out on Super Bowl 51 because of this. Hundreds of millions of dollars for the local economy was just swept off the table as an incentive to get this done anytime soon. Now it comes down to who will blink first when it comes to moving the franchise or getting renovations done.

It was not swept under the table because it was already losing and had no chance really. The bitter taste of funding anything in Florida can be blamed on Loria/Miami Marlins management.

Besides, this BS that Goodell is pulling is hypocrital. So now, INCLUDED in the bullying of city and state officials to hold cities and states hostage to build a stadium, now have a commissioner doing the same thing.

The fins aren't going anywhere and even with the renovations there were ZERO guarantees miami was getting a super bowl.

THAT was a good ole fashion BS move by the NFL to either persuade Ross to pay it all himself(something he would never do) or to fool the voting public to THINK they would get it and vote for the renovations...and you call tell they were falling for it.

But considering what the Marlins did... can you blame anyone?
