It was not swept under the table because it was already losing and had no chance really. The bitter taste of funding anything in Florida can be blamed on Loria/Miami Marlins management.
Bingo!

I said swept off the table, as in it was an incentive to get this done. If the community won't support the team I wonder what reactions will be if they find themselves without one in the future.
Of course not.THAT was a good ole fashion BS move by the NFL to either persuade Ross to pay it all himself(something he would never do) or to fool the voting public to THINK they would get it and vote for the renovations...and you call tell they were falling for it.
But considering what the Marlins did... can you blame anyone?
I am willing to bet money the Dolphins will never leave. This had NOTHING to do with the team because the fans LIKE the Stadium in its current condition. You know full well that MAYBE 20% of the local fans go to the Super Bowl when it is played in your city. This had more to do with hookg up execs and sponsors that dish out money for the league. I know you might try the ole, "money for the local economy" ...but if the NFL REALLY cared about local economies in these cities and states, they would encourage the teams to pull a AMAZING PR move... pay for the stadium/renovations yourself.
None of that really makes sense, the Super Bowl benefits more than the 10s of thousands that actually attend the game. It's a nearly half billion dollar bonus for a city with a capable host stadium and economy, the citizens and local government of Miami has declined to compete for that event in the future is all.
Will be interesting to see what happens, next. The Dolphins don't have a long term lease and Ross says the team isn't for sale, but they become one of the best positioned teams to be purchased and moved to LA or another location now.

So what happens if it snows in New Jersey, no more Super Bowl's for East Rutherford? The timing for the Dolphins could NOT have been worse....and reality, it was Goodell that pushed this crap just because it rained on Prince during a Super Bowl half time show. THAT is where it all started.
still short sighted if they lose the team it will cost $$$$$$$$$$ to build a new one. and they will want a New one to come back. pro sports are force feed to them(FLA) anyway imoThey did not decline to compete. Ownership from another franchise has left a sour taste in politicians mouths. You do not understad because you do not live here and seen what has happened. The Marlins ownership not only screwed it up for the Dolphins, but they screwed the Jags, Bucs, Magic, Rays, Lightning and the Panthers. EVERY single request for public funds that goes up to Tallahassee will be looked that with an incredibly doubtful eye.

Heck, we still haven't gotten another Super Bowl in Atlanta because of a freak ice storm. And now we have to replace our "antiquated" 24 year old dome to get another one. Meanwhile New Orleans has no problem with the really old Super Dome.

All that is is context, and the reason they've decided to not compete for future Super Bowls indefinitely. They have the hard part taken care of, they are in southern Florida and have an NFL team. Really the venue is the easiest part of the equation. Billions in revenue over the next couple decades from those events alone, almost literally low hanging fruit. You're right, I don't know the history, but it doesn't change the above.
Easy to say in theory, but not practical since the horse is already out of the barn on that. There's always a community that recognizes the value of a major, professional sports franchise and will be willing to foot part or much of the cost to get it done. Does it make it right?? Probably not, but as long as there are cities desperate for a team, it's the way it is.
After Houston lost the Oilers to Nashville, the city created a Sports Authority to develop and build new sports venues, of which Minute Maid Park and Reliant Stadium were part. The public financing was $194M for Reliant Stadium, which comes from hotel occupancy and short-term car rental taxes. For that $194M investment, a 2003 study showed that Reliant Stadium is responsible for almost $323M in direct annual spending in the local economy. This doesn't include special events like the Final Four, Super Bowl, etc...

According to the report, not long:And at no point was any of those franchised were torn apart after a successful season a year after (a) winning world championships in separate years, (b) promised that they would complete financially with other teams and (c) told they were losing money and could not afford the current best player and therefore had to trade them(last years triple crown winner Miguel Cabrera) then come to find out they WERE making money(luxury tax or whatever it is called) later revealed in leaked documents.
This town and the states politicians are muddied waters now, this will take a while to get over. HOW LONG after they lost the Oilers was this authority formed?

I think we understand the political climate down there, but you have to also recognize the economic value most sports franchises have to the community. If the Miami-area officials don't, someone else might. Time will tell if the gamble was worth it, I guess....
If the teams want the tax payers to build them a stadium, then the concessions and ticket prices should be regulated by the local state goverment.
Why pay $9 for a beer when our tax dollars went to pay for it.
