DISH Hopper coming at CES ?

In the 2 or 3 different threads about Hopper/Joey, it would seem that the 2 units communicate via the coax (MOCA) only. Can this be confirmed? I see the Hopper has 2 RJ45 Ethernet ports? What do they do? What about homeplug? Does it happen to have WiFi?

My 12 year old house only has coax in the family room and master bedroom. Homeplug works great, an WiFi works decent. The need for coax may be a show stopper for me; unless the package works so well I'm willing to drop Coax into the other rooms, in a 2 story house.

I wonder how many less pages would be in this thread if the original posts by Scott about the USB tuners had been read by all the people who are complaining about the lack of OTA tuners in the Hopper.

Maybe we should see how many people can post that the Hopper will work for them just to get some balance.

There is a very skewed perception of what is needed in these forums. 99% of folks don't have 6 tuners recording at once. I bet 95% of folks with Dish HD locals don't use or care about OTA. I expect OTA will be supported, but even if not, the box would still be a fit for the majority of homes.

I'm guessing Joey will be a hit with the home decorators.

They will figure out a flat mount for Joey along with a flat screen and eliminate the need for shelving, etc required for a "standard" STB.

Space is a big deal in the decorator business

DISH Network offered a couple of HDTVs that have an NTSC tuner but no ATSC capability.

Be careful how you classify things.

He stated: "I have an HDTV that has no tuner at all....." That, by definition, is a monitor, not a television. We only spoke of his situation, not a thing about any Dish or other offering.

Vivek says it will be out this quater and it still does not have a price point. He also says there will be a fantastic promotion for new and existing customers.

As soon as I get the information, and the OK to talk about it, I will be sure to let everyone know

A bit off topic, but we all need to recognize that we are making a lot of demands on Matt right now and even with as much information as he is being given, he is probably under some kind of non-disclosure which restricts him from being able to divulge certain specifics until all the training is completed and Dish can release the public information via all of the portals simultaneously.

While that will probably not prevent a future deluge of questions concerning Hopper / Joey, I think we can all agree that Matt, and the entire DIRT team who work with this forum, will probably be the best and most reliable source for that information once it is publicly available.

Keep up the GREAT WORK DIRT, and many thanks to Scott, and all of the Mods, for keeping Satellite Guys going and making DIRT available!

Remember, we hear it FIRST, here, and it is always ACCURATE.

I think I'll just get the Hopper for the remote finder. :D

Most households primary arguments are about money. Ours is "Where the hell did you put the damn remote?!"

Dish's version of the HD locals are nothing short of a bastardization of what the locals send out OTA. I will take locals OTA over the Dish feeds any time.

We NEVER watch locals on Dish. We always watch locals OTA. We are in Chicago and have a huge number to choose from, but choose to primarily watch WTTW, Channel 11, PBS - because of both the quality of the programming AND the exceptional quality of the signal, image and audio. Once Dish processes Channel 11, all we have is a standard screen - with the sides of the wide screen truncated - and a blurry, grainy image.

The other half loves to watch the re-runs on WICU - the U, where restored prints of all of the sitcoms from the 50s and 60s are shown on a regular basis. Another station which, even though 26-3 is not in HD, has an exceptional picture quality - not to mention the fact that Dish doesn't even provide access to the sub-channels in the Chicago market.

So, JM42, I respectfully DISAGREE with you - LOCAL OTA IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO A WHOLE LOT MORE THAN 5% OF DISH'S CUSTOMERS!

I would have to say that the average customer has no idea they can get OTA on their Dish receivers and therefore it is not very important to them. If I bring it up to customers some seem to have some interest in it. The average Dish customer I deal with has been with satellite service or cable service and has never had or have removed their old antenna. There are a lot of people on here that want it because the are knowledgeable about it. It just seems like the majority want it because it is true for the ones that are online. I'd be curious to know what the total is. I'll bet it's under 20% at least.

Extremely important - yes. More than 5% - not so sure. Even if it's 10% the point is still valid - Hopper would be a fit for most. It doesn't have to be a fit for all.

I can think of a dozen folks I know who have E* or D*, I'm the only one with OTA hooked up. That could well vary by area.

I'll admit it's pure conjecture - I don't have any hard numbers. I'd like to hear from an installer or retail seller in a metro area.

The reason for the 30 or more different posts on OTA concerns is Dish has Burned us before. FACT. There is NO USB OTA avl yet. They are researching to see which one they will use either third party or in house. The issue is Dish will not have one at release time. This means Dish will be using the word SOON. The OTA could be out 2 weeks after release or one year from now or never. Looking at past history dish has mentioned at CES they were coming out with products or features and then never delivered or delivered a whole years later.

At this point anyone needed OTA should NOT get the Hopper, they should wait till the OTA add on is released.

OTA=(free over the air channels not carried by dish)

I remember a couple of years ago, I think is was from Claude, that the OTA modules for the 722/222K were not selling well.

But isn't that stating the obvious? Anyone who buys something based on an unreleased accessory is gambling, if they don't realize that fact they are a fool.

Dish just announced that there will not be any kind of rate increases for their upcoming promotion starting 2/1/12.
interesting you posted that date. I saw a rumor about the Hopper being released on 2/1/12 rather than March.

Probably not true if Dish hasn't even decided on pricing yet, but thought i'd mention the coincidence.

Yep, and it's the same with buying anything, especially when buying consumer electronics.

Any word on NY RSN's from CES?

Sling adapter is only playing live TV
