Did you get the Windows 10 upgrade notice?

I removed update KB3035583, and the "Get Windows 10" icon went away. I then went into my user controls and hid that update from coming back.

Still no update notice on my Windows 8.1 machine with Media Center.

On my Mac with Parallels, it shows no update icon, however if I go to Windows Update it tells me I can reserved my copy now, I click the link and it takes me to the Microsoft site and when I click on Reserve my copy it does nothing...

I would take the upgrade if it wasn't for loosing Windows Media Center or not knowing what to replace it with at little to no cost. Upgrading to the latest OS only to lose functionality doesn't make good sense to me. What else would we lose? Wondering if my Office 2007 Suite would crap out too?

Well the upgrade offer worked for me. I now have a free full version of Win 10 reserved for me. I don't know that I want to install it yet, but if I do it will be there.

All this really does it download the upgrade when it becomes available, you still decide when you want to upgrade. You do not really have to reserve it, you can upgrade anytime during the first year. I suspect the real reason they are doing this is to try to get a lot of the downloading spread out and not have to deal with a couple hundred million upgrading at the same time.

So after the first year, and those that done the upgrade, what happens if you need to reinstall windows on your computer? Will you not be able to reinstall Windows 10 to the computer and end up having to pay at that point to get it back?

MS has said that you have a permanent license to W10 and you can reinstall it on the same box. The one year limit is to try to force as many as possible to upgrade as fast as possible (mainly businesses that would put it off forever like XP).

They're giving it away in hopes that when they institute subscriptions, people will pony up.

Microsoft has many ways to make a product that isn't "supported" hard to use. My favorite is not updating the SSL keys.

On tv, drug dealers do the same thing. Give the drugs away for FREE the first time, then later they get you when you have to start paying up to play the game.

Microsoft isn't doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They have to have a way to monetize it, as they aren't a charity.

Is there some way to get it besides through Windows Update? I'm thinking about finally moving to 64-bits. I was hoping to be able to get a 64-bit version of Windows 10 rather than having to reinstall Windows 7 as 64-bit first. (Yes, I understand they probably won't allow upgrading from 32-bit 7 to 64-bit 10, but I'd rather do one reinstall of all my software rather than two!)

I don't think so. The 'free' upgrade will be just that, a free upgrade for those running W7 or W8.1 for the life of the computer it is done on. Every other way will involve a sale of the OS either OEM with the new computer or full retail.

And given how often computers are changed, that should work just fine for both the end users and MS.

I do not think so... MS has finally realized (after XP) that businesses flatly will not pay to upgrade old systems. Consumers do not do so either. So, by giving up a minimal upgrade revenue stream they can save a lot of money by retiring old versions of OSes earlier. They know that motherboards will eventually fail and a new machine (and new windows license) will be purchased.

A few years ago Adobe abandoned it's Creative Suite and moved to a completely different subscription only model on their top tier software, MS also offered subscription based software on some of it's products. Clint Patterson had this to say about Adobe's move. (Like Adobe, we think subscription software-as-a-service is the future) And recently " Microsoft details Windows 10 as a service"


We will see in two or three years. I hope you guys are right.

So I take it that their server will be able to somehow detect your machine when you need to reinstall Windows 10 to it? You would have the Windows 7 or 8 disk so would it just do an update to Windows 10 each time you go to do the reinstall? Or would you be able to make a backup dish of Windows 10 so that you dont have to do the updates first to get to Windows 10?
