Get it yet? It is VERY SIMPLE math! Even at a non-acheivable $20/rate for non-HD subs and a very high $200/mo for HD subs, the masses STILL out earn.
OK, maybe the 5M was a bit of an exageration.

But the HD subs are still much more valued that regular TC or TC+ subs. For one, they tend to have the premium packages which brings in more revenue, they tend to sub to ST with bring in more revenue, and they tend to be more long term subs, which keeps down SAC.

So at the very least an HD sub should be worth 2-3 TC subs. So trying to gauge HD subs by total numbers alone (ie 700K) is not valid.

As for more national HD. D* has said that they are concentrating on locals first. That is their policy. However, due to outrage over the Superfan incident on this and other boards, D* changed their policy.

So policy is not always set in stone. If we bitch enough and threaten to leave in significant numbers, D* may alter policy and throw us a bone.

As for CC calling the V* channels crap, he had to do that. Those of us that visit boards such as these may know exactly what the V* channels are. And some of us like them. But the general public really has no idea. Someone looking to get into HD and is looking at a provider probably has no idea. All they see is more channels. He is just trying to stem the flow.

Margin and ROI. HD enthusiasts bring in more PROFIT per household than the plain jane users. Thats why the are coveted and not to be ignored.

Yes they are. Starting with last year all the races on TNT-HD were in fact HD even the Busch races were.
I think he meant that not all the races are on TNT in general. For 2006 TNT will have 7 races plus some Daytona 500 events like the Bud Shootout, Dual 125's and qualifying.

Here's a quote from the CEO of a Multibillion dollar communications company on the subject today:

"People will watch bugs on PBS if it's in high definition," said Roger L. Ogden, president and CEO of Gannett Broadcasting.

Kinda reinforces Carey's statement. :yikes

What is it with Directv customers tha tyou are willing to take it in the ass? And Directv is supposed to be the "highend" service?? Riiigghhht. He's blowing smoke up your asses, like Directv has always done. As far as Food network and HGTV--those are two great channels I'd be willing to see in HD. Keep your crappy 5 channels that are down-rezzed and call it compelling, quality HD programming. I'm gonna go watch HDNET in FULL rez beauty.

ok, i get it. they blasted up the spaceway twins and have two more birds going up this year just for kicks and giggles.

BTW , to each his own.....to me watching the galloping gourmet, julia child and some idiot yelling BAM! is not compelling content.

Somewhat shocked to see that 2 particular verbal assassins have not chimed in - but thats a good thing.
I knew we could count on the naysayers to show up on this - there are a few more that are regulars here.

BTW - I watch HDNet in beautiful HD already with DirecTV. If you want to compare picture quality some time - I have won 8 bets so far with others who thought they had better PQ with Comcast and Dish HD - they all lost their $20.

My favorite HD is NFL football, of course.

Discovery HD isn't bad either...

Nor is the Aquarium Channel, Paint Drying Channel, or Psychodelic Music Channel. :D

Here's something released today that fits that issue:

An estimated 21.1 million households used HD television in 2005, according to research company The Yankee Group, and that number is expected to more than triple to 78.1 million homes by 2010.

"People will watch bugs on PBS if it's in high definition," said Roger L. Ogden, president and CEO of Gannett Broadcasting.

I think it does exactly the opposite. He is saying that people will watch anything in HD. So if E* has V*, that will attract more people who won't care that it might be crap. So E* has crap to watch and D* doesn't. Not really good for D*.

Edit: Does anybody know how many HD subs E* has?

NO. It reinforces a spade is a spade. People will only accept watching dribble in HD for a short time - which is why Voom's service went out of business - they were dropping off like flies (no pun intended) quicker than new customers could be acquired.

Point is - HD is still very much in the 1st half of its evolution process with all providers - not quite a science yet, still more of an art form at this stage. In any account, it will only get better - and we should all enjoy the ride along the way. :up

Ummm and this shows what exactly?

I can quote 10 other CEOs saying HD is the most important thing this year...

You're proving nothing but DirecTV's smear campaign, built on consumer stupidity, is working well among its customers...

Ummm on Voom we have movies, even themed movie channels in HD, sports in HD, you know... uh, sorry, you don't know. :D Programming was pretty lame during the last 6 months, we all said that but it's still better than nothing on DirecTV.
It's kinda funny, as the oth3er poster said, that some DirecTV customers actually enjoy being taking it into the @ss, moreover they are proud of it...

Here's a new slogan for DirecTV;

"DirecTV HD: BOGUTI - bend over, grease up and take it!"

I'm sure having HD locals are great, of course - I have plenty of OTA HD too. For free and it dopes't come before my Vooms or HDNets. :D

You mean the fact that the guy is laughable, especially after this comment?
The point was that the issue had been exhaustibly bantored about for many months.

You clearly missed the point - it had nothing to do with the "importance" of HD, rather, it had to do with the fact that there was a demand so strong that people will watch almost anything that is in HD. Try reading it again in the context of the previous line that describes the rapid growth of HD.

Continuing evidence that the verbal assassins just love to chastise just for the sake of argument alone. Live with it my friend, HD is here to stay - and not all of us are either wound up like a tight spring or sitting there with a signal meter 24X7 like some of the technocritics here. Some of us like what we have and look forward to the future, as opposed to spending our days whining.

Poetry from the trailer park I suppose. The use of this language is soooooo convincing.

Another proof statement.

I wonder where did you get this crap - Voom DBS closed because investors forced CV to close it, soon after it actually started.

In case you still don't get what I'm referring to, ask yourself: how many years DirecTV spent in the red before it started making profit?

Point is - HD is still very much in the 1st half of its evolution process with all providers - not quite a science yet, still more of an art form at this stage.

This is empty BS. :) HD is here, content is catching up. It's only DirecTV who's trying to cover the fact that Dish really fooled them and now they have no choice but stick with their pathetic "HD locals T3H B3ST!" styance. :D

In any account, it will only get better - and we should all enjoy the ride along the way. :up

Well, some of us are enjoying it for years now... :p

Umm and it has to do with the lack of HD on DirecTV... what?
