Apple losses are Google gains

At the risk of sounding like a troll: half of those Apple faithful probably don't know what Android means...

Not just the apple faithful; look at the percent of Android and BB customers who say the same thing. The power of marketing, and the "cool" factor I guess.

Here is my anecdotal statistics (from the time I bought my N1, before iPhone 4 was released):
There are 7 people among the ones I regularly communicate with that have an iPhone (from 2G to 3GS).
None of them would consider spending $1K for a gadget out of the ordinary.

When asked, 6 knew what the word BlackBerry means and three heard the word jailbreak.
No one knew what Android, webOS, tethering, hotspot, rooting, unlocking means.

The key word there my friend, is anecdotal. And anecdotal and statistics together is a contradiction in terms. Just saying. :)

Not really, Doc. I think by definition diogen has just admitted his information posted is insignificant and useless rather than contradictory. :)

I heard a news blurb late yesterday that phones using Android, have now outsold phones using Rim's BB with phones using Apple iOS, in the number three spot. However, phone sales of phones using Apple's iOS are number one in profits for their companies. It was also noted that the business model on Google Android is not one of sales profit for Google but rather an indirect sales of ads they plan to embed in all Android phones.

This has been rumored about for some time as speculators have been questioning the business motive for Android. One scenario was that once Google gets established as the main OS provider for all cell phones they will begin to push ad text messages to users, push email spam ads, and even phone recording ads. They will analyze your phone and Internet habits and taylor target you for specific ads categories. Satelliteguys will probably get spam from directTV and Dish several times a day, like I get DirecTV mail ads twice a week.

Just some updates on the numbers game:

-since June 160,000 Android phones are activated daily, 4.8M per month
-compare that with 100K in May, 60K in February and 30K last year.
That number keeps climbing, it's 200,000 per day now, i.e. 73M per year clip...
Google's Schmidt boasts 200K Android devices sold daily, waxes intellectual on society and technology -- Engadget
The key word there my friend, is anecdotal...
Never claimed it to be anything more.
Please note, I gave them the benefit of the doubt: 0% of my acquaintances know about Android but I allowed the reality to be only half as bad...:)

I know you didn't claim it was anything more, I just don't even like to make anecdotal claims, because too many people take stuff like that seriously. :)

Android being Linux certainly doesn't make money for Google by itself.
This much has been admitted by Schmidt himself during his interview with WSJ
But if you’ve got a one-trick pony, you want the one we have.
We’re in the ad business, and it’s growing rapidly. We picked the right trick.
...This {Android} can be a powerful business, a 10-plus billion-dollar business...

Interesting numbers:
iSupply on Android vs. iPhone
Most notable: this paper tries to forecast how many phones Android vs. iPhone will be in use as opposed to will be sold.
In other words, they try to eliminate handsets that ended up in landfills.

In short: by 2012 the smartphone market will be some 390M size while Android will have 19% of it and iPhone 16%.
It is interesting that combined Google and Apple will own only 1/3 of the smartphone market (according to this analyst).
I'd have expected more.

There is a simple explanation to this discrepancy: Nokia.

Nokia's name is mostly associated (this side of the ocean) as the maker of cheapo handsets at best and as dead as MS in the smartphone market at worst. Just one statistic to ponder: Nokia sells 300K Symbian handsets per day, i.e. 50% more than Android.

There is a world outside of North America, you know...:)

Apple's dynamic is only marginally better than RIM

Maybe iPnone 4 introduction in China can reverse this...:)

Those numbers explain the rhetoric level increase from Microsoft as well as "humanization" of Apple policies: how else can you fight 5%/Qtr market share increase.
And that's the US market, in the world Android has about the same market share while Apple/Microsoft not much more than half their share in the US.
I suspect the next step would be price drops.

I think this will all change some in the next year once the Windows 7 Phones hit the market. Microsoft is finally taking the smartphones market serious now and all the competition knows this. Th giant is awake as this point I would recommend everyone to wait before they jump-ship to a new phone or new contract and wait and see what WP 7 devices are coming out. If not I think many folks will kick themselves by not waiting and get stuck with a average phone with a bad carrier or great phone bad carrier. Either way WP 7 device will be out soon and so far everything I see and have heard some are already wishing they waited instead of going to droid or apple.

I have no doubts that MS' share of the smartphone market in one year from now will be higher that today.

The questions are: how much higher and who will be the loser(s)?

Something drastic has to be done to stop Google, e.g. suing them directly...
