Apple IPAD Owner's Thread

Bought my kid some music he was asking for the other day; did it on my pc since that is where we sync his ipod nano. Gotta love the new iTunes features. The music automatically appeared on my mbp and my iPad. Very nice iOS5 feature. Buy once, instantly synced. Of course, now I have music by Buzzcock, Wheezer, and Motley Crue on my iPad. Goes along nicely with my collection of indie and jazz. :D

Over the weekend I starting finding apps that would not work on my iPad2...

First the new Video App does not play any videos.
My Djay app wont work saying that all my music is DRM protected. (when a lot of the music I ripped myself and it worked before ios5.)
The Weather Channel App bombs out.
Netflix does not work.
Slingbox App for iPad does not connect to most Slingboxes, while Slingbox app for iPhone works fine.

I am going to format my iPad and load up ios5 by itself then load stuff on as new instead of a restore and see how that does.

Here is some G-wiz info I found out a few minutes ago. Hook your iPad/iPhone to your computer, bring up iTunes, click on your device on the left. On the summary page, click on the serial # or software version to toggle the information displayed. Not sure how useful it is. Just kind of neat.

My video app works fine, but no videos in The Daily; Weather Channel bombs, HBO to Go doesn't work. The Back to the Future HD game bombs.

Living life in a beta world I guess. :)

That is the UDID. Its how I was able to link my iPad in a developer account for iOS5 access. :)

Can anyone recommend a good media player? I know VLC player was available for like a day a while back so that's gone, but I need something that will mainly play Xvid videos. Anyone have any advice?

Are there any good programs to stream videos to the iPad over a LAN ? I'm looking for something similar to playon but without a subscription and Internet streaming isnt a requirement.

Any videos you put into our iTunes library can be streamed to your iPad.

What about non iTunes stuff like avi files and such?

I don't think so. There was an app to do that for a very short time, but it was pulled for some reason.

But not all is lost. Get Handbrake and it will convert most formats to something iTunes and the iPad likes.

edit: here's a link discussing this and some solutions you might try:

Listening to Leo Leporte right now and he just had 4 delivered to his office while on the air.

Personally, I do not see the fascination with these things. Smart phones can do more and they are a lot easier to carry around. Small laptops can do more and they are just as easy to carry around.

To each his own.

For those that do get one, congrats, and let us know what you think.
Funny how things change...

I think I found the solution. It's an app/service called ServeToMe. It costs $2.99 I think and it seems to do all I need it to do. Watching some episodes of Archer on my iPad now. Apparently it can be configured to work on the internet as well, but I don't really need that robust of features. I just like that now I can finally start watching all my videos basically wherever I want without being tethered to my desktop.

Started having real trouble with my ipad this past week. Well, the ipad works fine but I think it is the itunes store, and or Apple records.
Earlier in the week I began to get a message that my password is incorrect when I attempted to download an app. So, I gave up. Tried again later when I had more time and still got the same message. Asked me to reset the password by answering a security question. I answered it and it said my answer was incorrect. I double checked everything case, spelling etc. and it still said it was incorrect. Next, I tried to log in again and it said my account is disabled wait 8 hours.
Got back After 8 hours everything seemed to work fine. That was Thursday. Today I tried to download an app and got the similar message that my password was incorrect. I tried to reset and this time it said to my account has been disabled, please contact tech support. So, I tried to use the link they sent and the first thing I got was a request for my ipad serial number. I looked it up and carefully pasted it in and clicked next and this time it said my serial number did not exist. I tried this process several times and no go. The number on my "About" screen matches the number on the package and the number printed on the ipad back in microtype. Yet Apple says the number doesn't exist. So now what do I do? Maybe in 24 hours I'll try again and log into my account to see what I look like. If I can't do that I guess it's a trip into the Apple store to get them to figure it out. I'm sure they will tell me they can't help me unless I buy something first.

I am guessing you don't have apple care for it?

No but when did buying Apple Care become necessary to use an ipad with itunes store? Why should that matter?

I was referring to your comment about likely difficulty getting help at the Apple Store. Apple Care is like the golden ticket to fast service.

Pretty obvious something got screwed up with their database, the question is how they will fix it. Or if it is something a 22 year old genius can fix. Hope it works out.

Just tried it again on ipad and it failed. I tried it on my Dell laptop and I got in. I poked around my account to see what was strange if anything and everything looked normal. I examined my security question and that hadn't changed but I reset the answer. I then checked my CC info and the only thing there that was strange is the security code was labeled as "missing" OK, so I reentered it and saved that out so I could continue. Nothing else looked strange. Went back to the ipad and tried to access app updates and got the same BS about reentering passwords so I did. Got asked about security question and I entered it exactly the way I did on my laptop. Wrong answer! Oh gdammit! Here we go again. started the whole process over with the Dell laptop again and this time I did a different security question. Long story short, this time it worked. and several retries and continued to have no problem logging in. All this nonsense this morning was fast and took under 20 minutes.

Here's my theory as to why I had trouble- Hope this be a warning to all so you won't make a similar mistake- It may apply to other high security sites.

On the ipad there is a general setting called "spell checker" When I went to my laptop and logged into my account I was asked a security Q&A, The one like What High School did you attend? So, my answer was originally typed in with all lower case as my answer. However, the ipad spell checker which I recently turned on for convenience always capitalizes the first letter in a line of typing even if it doesn't need it. The answer here is case sensitive. So when I typed in my answer, it changed the first letter in my answer to Upper case and the stored answer was lower case. Unfortunately the Apple security system switches each letter after a brief moment to *****. However, on my ipad, I happened to catch the spell checker adjustment before it went to *. When I set this up I did it on the laptop with no auto spell checker so my answer was always xxxxxx but when asked on the ipad with auto spell checker it was changed to Xxxxxx and in a brief moment switched to ******. Which then came up as wrong! The final time I changed things using my laptop, I answered the question making sure the stored answer was in the form of Xxxxx. now when I type it in it goes through.

One clue that led me to carefully observe at this moment in the process was on the ipad every time I tried to type my e-mail address it changed it from dlandis@ to Dlandes@ I continually have to correct it when spell checker is in auto mode. But with that it stays on the screen and never goes to ****** so I have time to observe the changes.

If any of you think the "Geniuses" at Apple could figure this out? I doubt it. They are trained to sell not to fix. I would be required to buy Apple Care and then their solution would have been to reopen a new itunes account. As a stock holder I gotta love their approach as it builds sales and profits and they are trained to make you love spending your money at Apple. As a geek who just loves the technology, I need to keep my distance from the store as it makes my blood boil.

Weird. And irritating for sure.

I have to enter my CC CVN code every time I buy something from my PC; but never from my mac or iPad. No idea why.
