ALL Hoppers will soon lose the ability to resume recordings in progress

I have heard that at the beginning of October Dish is planning to force all Hoppers to update to the Carbon UI that is currently on the Hopper 3. I just want to let everyone know that when this is done all Hopper owners will lose the ability to resume if a recording is still in progress. If the recording is completed you can resume but if the recording is still in progress no resume option is available. So if you start watching a program that is still recording and go watch something else and try to continue watching that program while it is still recording this is currently not possible in the Carbon UI that is on the Hopper 3 and soon will be forced onto all Hoppers.


Thie ability to resume a recording that is still in progress is an especially important feature for sports fans who record lots of games. Especially when combined with the fact that all Hoppers have always shown time remaining, rather then time played, when watching a recording.


I have reported this issue to Dish via phone calls and support forum several times since the Hopper 3 was first introduced but it still has not been fixed as of 9-11-16. The ability to resume watching a recording that is still in progress is available in every other DVR by every other provider in the country, Direct TV, TiVo, Comcast, Uverse and Time Warner. Please Dish do not force the Carbon UI to all Hoppers until the option to resume a recording that is still in progress is restored. As this will make Dish the only cable provider in the country in which users will not be able to resume watching a recording that is still in progress.


If you do not want to lose the ability to resume watching a recording that is still in progress removed from ALL Hoppers in October, please respond to this thread asking Dish to add this capability to the Carbon UI before forcing it to all Hoppers.

Unfortunately DISH has nothing to do with it. Dish does not write the software.

The software is from Echostar, who seems to mostly do what they want. I am hoping that things improve greatly now that Vivek from DISH is moving to be president of Echostar.

Not sure how Dish and Echostar is setup but in the majority of cases (I would say) divisions within a company operate as separate entities. They have separate management, employees, and profit and loss. That would make Dish a customer of Echostar (and pays Echostar for those services). As a customer I would think Dish would be able to set the feature set of the software that Echostar writes for them.

As much as I like this site, posting here is not going to save a feature or prevent Dish from rolling out software they want to roll out when they want to roll it out.

Generally true. Maybe Scott can be specific but I do believe there have been some things DISH ended up doing if not because of many posts here at least they may have been nudged to things they may have been contemplating.
The current subscriber deals that closely match what new subscribers get may be done now by DISH because of the industry wide loss of subscribers. But that has been the #1 discussion here for a very long time. And what was second? Packages without sports and more towards A La Carte. And DISH has done that now too. I'm not saying DISH did those or other things based on posts here, but maybe at least taking that into consideration? After all they along with Scott pioneered the DIRT concept, that certainly leads to a greater possiblity they are not blind to common thoughts/posts here.

That shouldn't change. If I'm reading the OP correct, this is in the case of times, such as I'm recording South Park, and I want to start it over, while the episode is still recording (starting it over 10 minutes into the Hopper recording the same episode). I'll have to wait until 10:30, when it's done recording to watch it from the beginning. It shouldn't affect pausing live tv. It's the same as changing the channel. The Hopper loses everything that happened before

What it means is if you are recording and watching a program and decide you want to watch the rest later if the recording process has not ended for the program when you com back to watch there will not be a resume option only start from the beginning. DISH DVRs have never had resume in this situation so this is not new.

Why do my Hoppers give me the option to resume?
It even asks if I want to resume from the different points from each Hopper.

If you guys are complaining about this being unavailable while you are recording live tv, well you seriously need to find better things to do with your time...

DISH DVRs have never had resume in this situation so this is not new.

Not entirely true. On the 722 family of DVRs, if you select the currently recording event from the DVR menu, as long as you aren't at the same TV/tuner that is recording the event, you can stop and resume at your heart's content. Have you tried going thru the DVR menu to watch the recording event?

Here's my real world situation:

I start watching CBS News (recorded) at a bit after 7, and I know I won't be able to watch until 9 but will finish later in the day. Pause at 7:20 to go into the exercise room and use the treadmill. THERE WILL BE NO PAUSE POINT. Join only works within the 1 hour buffer.

Or worse, I go out for a bike ride at 7:20 for an hour-plus. NO PAUSE POINT WHEN I GET HOME. And maybe not even one to use if I get back after the recording's over.

Interesting quirk now - if I do get back after the recording's over, I leave it on pause, but turn the TV off. The DVR listing shows no Resume, unless I Stop on the darkened TV. Then Resume mysteriously appears, but only if I go completely out of the DVR listings and then back in.

So yes, this is a real-world problem.

My scenario is multiple football games recording on a bunch of the 16 channels. I want to switch between them while they are still recording and resume when I go back to a game I was previously viewing. Seems like a simple thing to do. Seems like they must be using a recording memory location for multiple things depending on whether the recording has finished.

OK - I had something very odd happen this morning. I was watching a morning news show, which was recording, in the bedroom as I got dressed. Turned things off, went to the den to get a cup of coffee and drink it and watch more before heading to work. Usual routine. I usually pause and note where I am in the news show before changing rooms, then start it back from the beginning in the other room (since it is still recording) and FF to where I left off in the bedroom.

So this morning I did that, but when I was in the den and went to restart the show and FF to where I left off - it gave me the option to resume where I had paused in the bedroom.

Was there an update last night that gave us this "resume while recording" feature back? Or did my Hopper 3 just tease me?
