Breaking news: Daniel Bard called up

BOSTON -- It appears the Daniel Bard Era is about to begin.
The Red Sox have not made an official announcement, but Bard is expected to be at Fenway Park Sunday night for the series finale against the Rays.
The 23-year-old right-hander was original selected as the Sox' second pick of the first round (28th overall) in the 2006 draft.
This highly-touted prospect has been outstanding for the PawSox this season. He's 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA and 6 saves in 11 games. He has struck out 29 batters in 16 innings and can easily reach 100 MPH on the radar gun. He's been the closer for Pawtucket.
The Red Sox will not only have to take someone off the 25-man roster in Boston to make room for Bard, but they'll also make a move to put Bard on the 40-man roster.

Another monster sports night for Boston, but the ironic thing is NONE of them are on LOCAL TV.

Hurricanes vs. Bruins- 7:30 ET on Versus

Celtics vs. Magic- 8:00 ET on TNT

Rays vs. Red Sox- 8:00 ET On ESPN

Remote burnout once again, although MOST of my attention will be on the Bruins game.

True...but I DO love that Garza vs. Beckett game. :hungry:

Rays just tied up the Red Sox 3-3 top of 6th, but more importantly, Dustin Pedroia had to leave the game with a groin injury.

Awesome news. Bard is a Tar Heel. Hope he does well for the Sox. :up

Anders, I saw this kid down in Pawtucket (R.I.) a couple of weeks ago, and he looks virtually unhittable! The scouts all say he's a can't miss.
Nice. Bard and Andrew Miller, now with the Marlins, were the top 2 pitchers for UNC back in 2006 when Carolina made their first of 3 straight CWS. That team should have won it all. Hopefully they can have nice careers in the majors.

And BTW Carolina is #1 in the nation in baseball right now. Could there be another NC in store this year? :D

I watched Miller when he was in the CWS and was very impressed then the Tigers drafted him, I was floored when they traded him, and very disappointed to see him go.
I wish him well. :)
Could not understand why the Tigers would trade him, I felt the same way about when they traded Jir Jirjjin's to the Braves .
Two pitchers that may come back to haunt them .... hopefully not as bad as the John Smoltz trade.

You may be the first person I've ever met who's actually interested in College Baseball. :D

Red Sox win 4-3, thus completing a perfect Beantown sports sweep.
I have to admit I am shocked. I gave up on Pablebon last night in the 9th when he gave up the hit and the runner went to 3rd with no outs, I turned it off in disgust. The Rays have me so convinced they can come back every time.

Ummm...make me two. With all the colleges out here having baseball teams due to the great year-round weather, it would be hard NOT to be a fan...or at least take notice.

LOTS of major leaguers came thru these warm, sunny collegiate fields of dreams my friend.

That trade was weird. The Tigers called Miller up after just a couple of months in the minors. And that was the year that Detroit reached the WS, so it's not like they were desperate. I have no idea what they got in return for Miller, but he's a Randy Johnson type pitcher so it had better be good.

Two things that may hinder College Baseball popularity:.

1. Metal Bats. "PING"!!!!!!!!!!

2. In all other sports, the collegiate level serves as the farm system for the professional level. This is not the case for Baseball. In Baseball, it's not uncommon for a player that is drafted from college not be seen or heard from for years because he will bounce around in the Minors until he develops.

The name Miguel Cabrera ring a bell? Dontrelle Willis was also a throw in on that deal. I haven't kept up with Miller, how's he doing?
