AL Central 2010

Mid-season grades.

Outfield - A
Didn't envision such strong performances by two rookies here. Boesch would be ROY if the voting was done today. 5 tool player. Jackson is making everyone forget about Granderson. He could be a fixture here in CF for a long time. As for Magglio, well he's being Maggs. What more could you ask for? Despite last nights heroics, Damon needs to light a fire under his ass. I understand that he DH's often, but he gets games in the OF too.

INFIELD - B

This grade is inflated by Cabrera's mighty bat. Inge has been hitting much better of late, and Guillen's bat is also showing signs recovery. His defense leaves something to be desired. Absolutely no hitting from C and SS.

Defense - C

How is this? On paper they looked really solid, but the stat's say these guys aren't getting the job done. Fortunately it hasn't cost them many games.

Starting rotation - C

Way too inconsistent after Verlander, although I do like what I see from Scherzer and Galarraga this past month. Will the real Bonderman ever show up?

Bullpen -A

If I have to explain this grade, you haven't been watching. Like Yogi Berra said - "If you ain't got a bullpen, you ain't got nothing." Losing Zumaya was a blow, but maybe Perry will fill the slot this time around. I couldn't say anything bad about Valverde. Well maybe his eyeglasses are kinda weird.

Bench - C

Not a great bench, not a bad bench, We could use a really good PH.

Coaching - A

OK. I'm a Leyland fan, no secret there. So maybe my grade is a little high, but on some nights we have 5 rookies in the line-up, and we are in first place. Think hard about that for a while.

I hoping that Dombrowski takes a run at Cliff Lee. If only to keep him from the Twins. We have an advantage in that we have more farm talent to trade then they do. I also believe Illitch will pony up to keep him here. A lot of money and a couple of prospects, but this guy would be worth it. I still see them acquiring a SS too.At any rate Dombrowski has set this team up to be competitive in the Central for the next 5 years.

Nice post Paul ... :up

I agree with most of it. :)

I too hope they make a run at Lee.
If you recall, when the Cabrera deal went down, you heard NOTHING from the Tigers till the very last minute.

DD. does his work very quietly.

Lee, Verlander and Scherzer would be very formidable and throw Porcello in there when he gets back.

I look for Bonderman to leave at the end of the year, I really like him, but he's just not got it done consistently.
For that matter the Starters have not got it done consistently.

Don't know if Damon will be back next year or not, with the diminished role of DH and spot OF'er.
I would like to see him back.

Jackson and Boesch have been GREAT.
Here's hoping they can do it year in and year out.

Jackson was in a slump for awhile went from around a .370 avg to just above .300, went on the DL and came back hitting better.
The AS break will do him good.
I was to see if his avg. picks up after the break, he looks like he could be a .320 hitter in the long run.

Tigers STILL cannot hit when they play a good/great pitcher.

Over all, I give them a B+.

How do you fall over a 4 FT fence?
You gotta live there and drive the highways to understand. Rear-view mirrors and turn signals are unnecessary features...and nobody understands the concept of slower traffic keeping to the right hand lanes. Raising the fences to 10ft. would only be viewed as an obstacle to someone's right to fall 30 feet on their head and kill others in the process. I feel for the folks who were injured by the douchbag falling on them. ;)

Riff...

Twins lose 6-5 tonight :(

Hopefully Young is oK....He and Span went for a gapper. Young slid and Span tried to leap over Young and Span's shin hit Young's wrist. Sadly neither one got the ball and it was a 2 run inside-the-park home run

Usless stats

We know the Tigers Road record is miserable at 16-25.

Their Night games are bad as well at 22-23.

Their Day games are a sterling 23-14

While their Home record is 30-12

So if they can play their games during the Day at Home, they can be WS champs !

Tigers in 1st, Twins in 3rd.

Doesn't really matter at this point, as long as they are in the thick of the race is all I ask for.

WS have moved into 2nd, for the moment, that too doesn't matter.

These teams will bounce in and out of 1st place for the rest of the year.

Personally, I would be MUCH happier if the Tigers started playing much better ball while still winning of course, the way they have played in some games , while still being towards the top, is pathetic.

They need to start playing fundamentally sound ball.

Still making way to many mental errors.
Still can't hit against a Top pitcher, or Rookie for that matter , more often than not.

Twins are limping to the break, but at least it is just the break. Plenty of time to get things going the right way.

Right now it is the Bullpen doing the limping. Slowey, Blackburn and Baker have pitched better since the rumors of one or more going to the bullpen in place of Duensing.

This is a long season and the Twins seem to play better in the second half. I think the rumors of them getting Cliff Lee are not likely but if they did offer Ramos and Minor League Pitcher the Mariners are stupid not to. They need a Catcher bad.

Agreed, the Catcher that the Twins would offer is the KEY piece to the puzzle, which is why I think the Twins are in this in the first place.

Just my take on the whole grade situation. I rank the Twins as a more talented team, and I think Jim Leland is the difference for the Tigers.

He's got them in 1st at this point in the season, can't do much better then that.

It's managing for sure because with pitching inconsistency and the almost worst d in the league they shouldn't be in first. Now we wait and see if they do in the second half this year what they've done the past 3, choke it away which leyland also has to take the blame for.

Detroit plays the Twins....

Friday 7:05pm
Saturday 4:05 PM
Sunday 1:05 PM

So maybe the Tigers will get 2 out of 3 games :)

I'd rather see the Twins win 2 of 3 this weekend. Gonna be a tougher task w/o Peavy, but Daniel Hudson will come up & he's been pitching well in AAA. Once he starts, SD will be the only team left in MLB that has used only 5 starters all year. Sox have to this point as well.

I agree. Its just the halfway point. Last year they were what 8 games out at the break? So if they're a couple games out I'm not worried :)
