I have a 1080p TV and a VIP211 receiver. Should I set my TV output to 720p or 1080i under the HDTV setup menu? Why? Thanks!
3. The TV... No point sending 1080i to a TV that is only 1280x720 (or 1360x768)...
There is also the argument that for fast-moving sports, 720p is better. But I have never been convinced of it.
It comes down to resolution.... 720p will give you about 1 Megapixel picture... 1080(i or p) will give you 2 Megapixels (1920x1080), so you get twice the resolution picture... Of course, that depends on three things...
This is kind of true, but a 1080i signal only sends half the picture (every other line) at a time so it's kind of hard to say it's actually 1920x1080. It appears to be that way because the refresh rate is so high.
In reality, going screen draw per screen draw, 720p is a higher resolution since it draws the full screen on each refresh.

That's true with older LCD's that have motion blur (coupled w/ deinterlacing) problems. It's less true these days.
