And yet successful coaches don't leave the NFL to coach at the NCAA level. The only ones that have done that, did not leave the NFL with winning records.

Saban did not leave the NFL for the glory of coaching Alabama, he left the NFL because he failed at his Dolphins gig. Same thing with Spurrier at the Redskins.

While a blueblood SEC team might be one of the top jobs in the NCAA, it's still a stepping stone to the NFL.

Yet the change I am talking about really only started happening when Saban left Miami to go to Bama. Since then, there has been a massive increase in salary and facility investment that has started to bridge the gap. I am certainly not saying that it has been historically equal, I am saying that these days, at certain schools only, the luster of a typical NFL gig does not shine as bright as it once did.

The money is there yes but so is recruiting and trying to control boosters.

On the flip side you have scouting and trying to control millionaire players.

Then please, give me a single example of a successful NFL head coach leaving to go to an NCAA program.

I can't think of a single one, yet there are plenty of top tier NCAA coaches who left to go to the NFL, even bad NFL teams from top NCAA ones.

Their have been plenty of successful NCAA coaches who left to go to the NFL, but I can only think of Carrol off of the top of my head that left, using that term again, a "tier one blueblood" to go directly to the NFL. By those teams I mean Bama, ND, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, and USC. And that is really even before the last decade changes that I have been talking about. Now it is even more true, for those schools, unless you are ran off, you generally do not leave those jobs. The power you wield over the entire program is unmatched and the pay is on par with the pros.

The coaches who leave are successful at big programs, but not top level traditional schools. Saban went from LSU, Spurrier from Florida, Kelly went from Oregon. All great programs for sure, but not top tier traditionally. Even so, the changes that have taken place over the last 10 years will likely make even coaches of those schools reconsider a move.

The one I could see making the move from one of the listed schools is Meyer, and I think it would be a terrible mistake.

Funny, but also a little creepy.

In case you missed it, the ESPN College GameDay crew dressed up as popular football coaches during Saturday's broadcast and Kirk Herbstreit dressed up as LSU head coach Les Miles.

Desmond Howard dressed as Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, Rece Davis was Baylor coach Art Briles, and Lee Corso went as Ohio State coach Urban Meyer.

Already knew this last weekend - just wasn't official. I tailgate with some big money players in the school. His health has been going down hill fast but the other thing is that VT will end payments on a bunch of past contracts this year so they have a ton of money to put into a new coach. Other suggestions they are going to go after Rich Rod from Arizona.

The biggest college football weekend of the season (maybe the decade).

We have what should be (ACC screw up) a top 25 matchup of Duke and #21 UNC at 11.
Then #8 ND at Pitt
#17 FSU at #3 Clemson
#5 TCU at #12 OK State
and #4 LSU at #7 Alabama

Other interesting matchups to watch are
Arkansas at Ole Miss
Auburn at A&M
MSU at Missouri
Cincinnati at Houston
Navy (6-1) at Memphis
and a solid Minn at OSU

This one is really gonna shake up the playoff picture.

I disagree, He left to coach the greatest College in football with the richest history. If he had left to Coach VA tech and Clemson or GT I would agree with you.

He left because he sucked at Miami, not because he really wanted to coach the Tide. It was a repeat of Spurrier's failure at the NFL.

What a farce, this suspension of the officiating crew at the Duke-Miami game. Normally, I have seen WEEKS for any kind of suspension of officiating crews, this one was THE NEXT MORNING?! Why so fast? Look, the lateral was an absolute mess...from the knee down to the player taking his helment off on the field before the the TD was signaled by the ref on the kickoff...all VERY VALID points. Of course, there was no mention by ACC offices about the fact they did not review the supposed touchdown with 6 seconds left that should have been reviewed...nor the 23 penatlies they called on Miami, MANY were way beyond questionable and too terrible to be labeled "phantom" calls.

I personally think it was more that he was miserable in the NFL environment than anything else. He had one decent year, and the second was not so good, but that pretty much fell in line with what Miami had achieved in years right around that time. Given time, and the right people I have no doubt Saban could have been a successful NFL coach. That's fairly true of most coaches at that level.

Lets not forget, he was in no danger of being let go, and many in Miami wanted him to stay. They would not have felt that way if they did not think he would eventually get them on the right track.

I have no issues with that call if made, but now you are talking what should have and what shouldn't have been called. That could be said about the 23 OTHER penalties called on Saturday night.

It wouldn't surprise me if Saban ends up in Indianapolis after this season. Why? Because Irsay will back up a Brinks truck and give him total control. He will also have what is needed most to be a successful NFL coach, a Franchise quarterback. He might have lasted longer in Miami if he would've signed Brees instead of Culpeper.
