2014 FIFA World Cup Official Thread

Yep, which has made this WC quite interesting so far IMO.

First Uruguay defeated by Costa Rica.
Then Spain losing 2 for 2, and getting kicked out, now I think that was a major surprise.

And now England, losing 2 games.
I understand this group with England, Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica is getting quite complicated.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow between Italy and Costa Rica, England still has some chance of moving into the next round, if a combination of things happen in the 3 round of this initial stage.

Now both games in the 3 round of the initial stage are played simultaneously to avoid the fiasco that happened in Spain 82, in the match West Germany vs Austria.

Watching the game, just great.
What an error by Italy, that almost cost them a goal, the Costa Rican didn´t receive the ball in good position.
I don´t believe that was a foul deserving a penalty shot, some commentators say yes, some others say no.
But anyways, after that mistake that din´t have consequences, then Costa Rica scores.

Yep, everything is possible here.
As for the upcoming Sunday match, US vs Portugal, I think US could win, considering also that Portugal is IMO somewhat overrated, even having Ronaldo did not make a difference in their match against Germany.

Congrats to Costa Rica for making history, they´re in the next round with this victory over Italy 1-0.

With this outcome, BTW, England thanks for participating, you´re not going into the next round.

Italy and Uruguay will fight for the second ticket to the next round in their upcoming match.

Yep, right through the only hole in the wall.
Sadly, for the Swiss team which I was rooting for, the Swiss defense had as much holes as Swiss cheese :crying

Group D is just odd. Three world champions and a CONCACAF team who isn't really known for their football success yet they found a way to beat two of them and knock the other one out of the tournament! Costa Rica, you bring honor to CONCACAF. US and Mexico thank you :)

Now moving on to Group E... France looks like the clear winner in this group but the race for second is getting really interesting. The Swiss, after coming off a dramatic win got hammered today by the French. Ecuador and Honduras right now are basically fighting for their deaths. I am really excited to find out the end result in the group that I couldn't care less about at the beginning.

It looks like France has secured a place for the next round, Switzerland and Ecuador still have a chance for the second position.
Honduras, the first CONCACAF team to be out of the WC.

World Cup soccer is American ratings gold
If it seems like everyone is talking about and watching the World Cup, you are not crazy.

In fact, Washington was the number one market for Monday's USA-Ghana game on ESPN. Among all viewers 18 and over, D.C. is followed by Orlando, Boston, New York and Baltimore. An estimated 376 thousand people watched the game in the metro area -- and that does NOT include people in bars and taverns.

Nearly 8 million homes around the country were tuned into the game.

So has the beautiful game watched by billions around the world finally turned up the field in America?

Maybe.

From New York to Natal, there's a sense that if John Brooks, who scored the final goal, can dream it, then maybe the USA can defy the predictions and make it to the World Cup finals.

"We hope the U.S. keeps it going. Simply because it will draw the mainstream fans to this beautiful world sport," says Paul Hecton, a partner in the Babylon Futbol Cafe in Falls Church, where ex-patriot soccer fans have been watching for years.

Lots of American fans figure if the team can make it to the finals, it will be a little like the miracle on ice when the U.S. beat Russia in hockey in the 1980 Olympics. The shear joy of victory could finally push soccer into the American mainstream.
