2011 Big Ten Football

To go after Rutgers, the Big Ten would have to be proactive as well, as they (with UConn) seem to be the ACC's next targets.

The Big Ten can't afford to sit around and wait.

Or perhaps the best thing to do is just ignore all this Conference idiocy. The Big Ten is doing well and has maintained solid relationships with its members. Perhaps it may be prudent to ask, "Why rock the boat?"

Plus, while everyone has a goofy basketball program, not everyone has a hockey program! Personally, I want to see more hockey when the Big Ten starts conference play in 2013. In this case, Notre Dame would be a great addition since they have a hockey team (currently in the CCHA) while Missouri and Rutgers do not.

Big Ten teams currently with a hockey program: Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State (CCHA), Minnesota and Wisconsin (WCHA), and Penn State which will be fielding a team starting in 2013.

Teams without a hockey program are: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern and Purdue. I would love to see all Big Ten teams field a hockey team. :)

Better to rock the boat that be left in the dust and only have the bottom feeders left. They need 1 or 2 more big names if they want to stay competitive IMO.

Bye Week: Northwestern, Purdue

- Easy week for the Big Ten prior to the first week of the conference schedule. The best games of the bunch are Colorado at Ohio State and San Diego State at Michigan...and these will be over with by half-time. There may be one or two other games that are competitive for a half.

- Nice to see early, late and night games on the BTN this week.

Have no hope for the Buckeyes. Their QB situation is a mess. Who do we go with? An aging, no-good 5th year Senior? Or a wet behind the ears true freshman?

Try starting a football season with Rich Rodriguez as your head coach...now that's hopelessness!

It's not a good situation and you're going to take your lumps this season. The defense will win some games, but the QB will probably cost them games against the better opponents. Regardless, Fickell should probably look at his youngsters and hopefully find someone who will be a superstarts in the future. The team just wasn't built to have Pryor leave early.

They've been tghere before, not too long ago.
Personally, I go with Miller and let him learn, better than wasting. The season with a 5th year player that has never played.
Would you rather start a qb with no experience or a 5th year back up with no experience.

I saw yesterday, Fickell was considering starting Braxton.

That might not be a bad idea. They have three freshman QBs on the roster so hopefully someone will step-up. Still, breaking-in a QB during the season is usually a painful experience.

It's official :

Freshman Braxton Miller to start for Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Colorado Buffaloes - ESPN

Thank you .... let the kid play and learn, he is the future and the present for that matter.

I really didn't want to see a 5th year Sr QB'ing the whole year as it would be a wasted year for the guy that could be playing and learning, had Boeserman continued to play, it would do nothing to get Miller game time and he would be starting from scratch next year, may as well start him now and see what happens.

Of course there will be a painful learning curve, but it's gotta start sometime.

Good choice! Get him ready for the Michigan game! That's the only thing that will matter this season.

Man as frustrating as Denard Robinson can be, he has a second gear like no other

Robinson has an arm...just not a pocket-passer and is too short to see over the line. Let's face it...he isn't a good fit for Brady Hoke's offensive, however we're lacking a power running back (e.g., Tyrone Wheatley, Anthony Thomas, Butch Woolfolk) - or a running back who can hold-on to the football based on today's game. Hoke has actually modified the offense quite a bit to involve Robinson, but he will need to complete his passes. I think they will need to have Denard roll-out of the pocket to be effective.

Early Games:

Central Michigan 7 Michigan State 45
Eastern Michigan 6 Penn State 34
Louisiana-Monroe 17 Iowa 45
San Diego State 7 Michigan 28

Games Notes: (by Riff)

- The Spartans looked good against Central Michigan. Of course, they always look good against lesser competition but not-so-good against the top teams.

- Penn State rolled over Eastern Michigan...but I just don't know how well they'll fare against the top Big Ten teams.

- A slopy kind of game in Ann Arbor, but the Michigan Defense played well against a solid San Diego State offense; Michigan's offense continues to hinge on the legs of Denard Robinson.

Late Games:

Colorado 17 Ohio State 37
South Dakota 10 Wisconsin 59
Western Michigan 20 Illinois 23

Game Notes: (by Riff)

  • Ohio State confirmed what I suspected...Colorado was overrated and using anyone other than Boeserman at QB is an improvement.
  • Wisconsin continues to roll...now, they just need to prove they are the best team against Big Ten opponents.
  • Illinois didn't play a great game but held on to win over a decent Western Michigan team. Additionally, they are off to their first 4-0 start since 1951. Yikes!
