2011 AL Central Thread

Haha yeah. They said his name was Alberto but when he got called up to this big leagues he asked the announcers to start calling him Al. I guess he thought it sounded more adult or something.

We've got tickets to this evening's game so I hope Brad Penny and the Detroit Tigers ate their spinach for lunch. I'll be attending the game with my two brothers. Although we have always enjoy the games, I always flashback to some of our more rowdy experiences of our youth. For example, my oldest brother (who was quite the trouble-maker) brought home the home plate and a yard of sod from when the Tigers won the '68 AL Championship; and I can't even begin to tell you all the fun we had as "Beacher Creatures" in Tiger Stadium (placing hand over heart as I type these words) - but if you'd been there, you know. As an added bonus we'll be grabbing a sandwich at the Hockeytown Cafe prior to the game...with our Mom! Not quite the rowdy times we had back in the 70s, I must say. Go Tigers! :)

Twins in a weather delay.....and its not raining

rained really hard around 7:15 and the tarp was already covered. Another storm cell going through now so they didnt even start the game yet. Guess they didnt want to do the 45 minute game then delay

It's called reality man. The big spending days are over. The payroll has consistency dropped. Hell they don't even have a payroll in the top 2 in the central. Half the payroll is tied up in 3 players. They lost what 30 million or more last year? While I understand your a tiger slapy and you get very defensive when the truth is spoken, the bottom line is. This is what we have. If your looking for a big deal for an expensive player it ain't happening. Call me what you want but not gonna happen and as I said thoughts of Reyes are delusional. He's a free agent and getting Crawford money. You think the tigers are paying him more than Cabrera? Nope!!!!!!!

Well, seeing your calling me delusional, where did I say that they were going to get him ?

Sure I would Love to have Mr. I get him, doubt that will happen, but then again, never expected to get Cabrera either.
As for money, YES the payroll has come down, they took about 60M off the books last year.
They have the money if they decide to pull the trigger.
However, they would have to give up quite a bit as well, unless they waited till the end of the year, in which case everyone would be in on the game for him.

Mr. I has a history, if he wants someone, he'll open the check book.

I said Reyes coming here is delusional thinking I wasn't actually calling anyone in particular delusional. As for mr. I opening up the check book. I see a history of that with his precious wings. What he does for the tigers is over pay past prime free agents, which you pretty much have to do. Tough to get guys to Detroit any other way. He does not have a history of doing this with the Tigers. I see them going after pitching if they go after anything. Wouldn't be shocked to see turner this month either.

How do you suppose the (OLD ?) Miguel Cabrera got here ?
He's not an OLD guy and didn't pay anymore than any other team would pay for him.

That said, I do know what your saying, but that has changed to some degree, it's not '04 after they needed to find SOMEBODY after losing 119 games.

They are not really strapped with a lot of HUGE contracts, Ordonez would be the only one that is not producing of the Big money guys.
You've got Cabrera at 20M, JV at 12.8M they have done more than what is expected, all though we have come to expect Cabrera to hit .320+ and have 100+ RBI. And J.V. is looking great ! (28)
Ordonez at 10M is just now getting his swing back after being on the DL. (OLD 37)
Martinez is at 12M and playing well. (32)
Cabrera is also 28

Tigers still DESPERATELY need a 2B that can play D and hit at least his weight, .270-.290 would be great.
Rayburn needs to GO.
He's hitting slightly over his weight, WT 185, AVG .203 .... yuck.

This is where Reyes would be a great pick up, he would play SS and Peralta would move over to 2B.

Well, it was an ugly kinda game tonight at Comerica Park...but the Tigers almost won it (should have at least tied it) in the bottom on the 9th. The Boos whenever Rayburn stepped to the plate were real and quite vocal after striking out. On another topic, my brother kept mentioning how Inge needs to sit if all he can bring to the plate a buck ninety-seven. An exciting game at time, but I tough loss nonetheless. Anyway, we'll be back tomorrow...and we will win the next two games. :) On a side note, we found out a few of our cousins were at the game. They had a private club box on the first base side so we met up with them for drinks and stayed for fireworks. All-in-all a good time was had by all...although a win would have it a perfect night.

I agree with your assessment, I would definitely be looking for a 2B at the deadline, more than likely NOT a huge name, but someone that can hit .280 and field.
Raburn at bat is as bad or worse than Inge and the D is bad.
Send him packing, he'll be better NEXT year, hopefully with someone else.

I thought that the play at 3B was very good when Inge was on rehab.

We can deal with a .222 avg (about for Inge) IF thats to ONLY one thats like that.

Whatever happened to a player hitting under .260-.270 NOT making the team.
Tigers have a BUNCH of players hitting under .260.
6 players in the line up last night (out of 11) hit .260 or under.
This is including Ordonez, which is working on getting his avg back up after being on DL.

I was surprised at the batting averages on the Giant...not one starter over .300 - and a whole bunch of Ingyburns in the lineup. They must have a stellar pitching lineup because they sure weren't hesitant to bring in the relief.

Last night was an aberration for them, they typically win games 1-0, 2-1 type ... they have a GREAT pitching staff.
Thats what took them to WS Champs last year.

When I looked at the Tigers stats last night, I never looked at the Giants, only 3 over .260., 1 at .297 the other 2 in the .260's.

I just talked to my oldest brother. He's a lot like me...a sore loser! We're both still a ticked about the loss last night. To be honest, I was steamed that Inge wandered so far off of 2nd base with one out and the bases loaded; he should have understood the greater importance of getting the tying run across the plate. Sure, he would have potentially scored on a Boesch single. However, even with his lineout we were still in the fat-part of the lineup. Ugh! The entire stadium was ready for a win and the way it ended sucked, big time!

Regardless, I feel good about Scherzer taking the mound tonight. :)
