All-Star Game action not in cards for Tigers' Justin Verlander

Los Angeles— It's still early, of course. A baseball season that already has seen more than its share of rainouts and pitching disruptions could see a few more between now and when the All-Star Game is played July 12 at Arizona.
But if the Tigers' pitching rotation sticks to its every-fifth-day routine, Justin Verlander's chances at starting, or even pitching, in this year's All-Star classic, are all but gone.
Verlander will take his normal turn Saturday against the Diamondbacks turn. If the rotation follows script, he also would pitch July 5 and July 10. That would eliminate any chance at him pitching in the All-Star Game — not only because of the Tigers' concerns, but because Major League Baseball has a rule against pitching on two days' rest.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland acknowledged this week that Verlander, who has been beyond overpowering in 2011, might miss a showcase event. But the Tigers come first.
"I'd have a hard time explaining to our owner why I kept him from pitching (a scheduled start) in order to pitch two innings in the All-Star Game," Leyland said. "I hope that he gets whatever rewards come his way. It's just that we can't run our ballclub for anybody pitching one or two innings."
Then again, 21/2 weeks is a long time to plan on anything, especially during a year when a manager's schedule has been no match for Mother Nature.
