Different game now. It is now a pass happy league where rules lean heavily towards the offense.

If Marino played now in his prime with these rules, the size of offensive linemen now and the speed of the game, he might throw for 7,000 yards.

If Peyton Manning had been healthy this season who knows what he might have passed for.

Im rarely do this but Im going to shamelessly plug my blog but for good reason. Do you know what honks me off...: The Good Old Days of the NFL The reason for the link is that the Giants play the 49ers in the NFC Championship. Nothing says the old days of the NFL like Giants/49ers. Remember the tough 7-3 game on Monday Night Football? How about 15-13 Giants in Candlestick in the NFC Title Game in 1991 to go to Super Bowl 25? And yes, how about when the Giants got screwed in the 2002 Wild Card game losing 39-38 on a pass interference call that wasnt called?

It's not like he always leads the league in passing, he has only a few times in his career and hasn't even been in the top 5 in a handful of the last 10 seasons. Last time Brees cracked 5k Manning was just 2 yards above 4k.

I "shamelessly" read the blog and I liked it. Just like you, I missed the good old days when life was less complicated. But we have to adapt. Just like you and gazillion other Americans, I too spend Sundays on the couch except for the occasional trip to the 'stick.

Just wondering, why do think the Giants got screwed in the 2002 wild card game? Weren't there two off-setting penalties? The pass interference and ineligible man down field? So, how were they screwed?

The Patriots might should consider a running game first against the Ravens. Aaron Hernandez might need to carry the ball some more & avoid another head injury. I don't think that Tom Brady will set or break any records that he'd be proud of in the game against the Ravens.

For all we know, this might be the year where Joe Flacco proves or wants to prove that his name belongs among the elite QB's. I still remember when they called Terry Bradshaw "dumb." 4 Super Bowl wins later & he's in the Hall of Fame. A Harbaugh versus Harbaugh Super Bowl is just as intriguing as a Patriots-49ers or Patriots-Giants. As a side note,I know that the 49ers have never lost a Super Bowl, but I don't think that the Giants have ever lost a Super Bowl either.

Joe Flacco will never be an "elite QB". He's actually regressed this year from season's past. Have you watched any of their games this year? If Flacco wins, much like Bald Bradshaw, he'll win it on the heels of his defense.

You should leave the game planning to the professionals.

The Ravens have the BEST rushing defense in the AFC. And it's not like New England excels in running the ball. During the regular season, they ranked 20th in rushing offense.

Why would the Patriots go out of their comfort zone and go to a "running game first" against the Ravens? Are they trying to control the clock so Joe Flacco won't beat them?

IF ANYTHING, the game plan would be to jump out to an early lead, and put the game in Flacco's hands.

He MIGHT never be elite because the team has a RUNNING GAME. He has had ONE bad year and suddenly he is middle of the road QB? Really? We are spoiled... EVERYONE wants a Brady, Brees or a Rogers. Sorry kids, those guys show up once in a blue moon.

Don't go on "ranking" too much. Their defense ranked WHERE...? And did a damn good job this past weekend. DIFFERENT season now...regular season sort of goes out the window in the playoffs.

Those are "elite" QB's. That's what the original poster was claiming. I'm not saying a middle of the road QB isn't adequate. But claiming Joe Flacco is an "elite" QB is a tad unrealistic. He's not even close.

Who are you talking to?

Roy suggested a running attack to beat the Ravens which I gave reason why that probably isn't the best idea in the world since they're the best at stopping the run. Pretty cut and dry. Not sure how you got confused on that one. Lol.

i've seen this guy play plenty and he's not a great QB. he's ok at best. but they may not need more than that considering their defense and as you said their running game. one of the issues i see with this guy is that he'll make one good throw then make a lot of bad throws. he's inconsistent which has nothing to do whether they have a running game or not. we all know its important to be consistently good at that position. i looked at his stats and from 2008 to 2011 the numbers seem pretty much the same except he's thrown the ball more than ever this season at 542 attempts which of course brings his completion percentage down to 54%. besides that his numbers look pretty much the same each season. not great but decent. i don't see him ever becoming elite but do the ravens need him to be? maybe not. is he better than dilfer was? yes.....

I am talking to all that are running on this ranking of teams as far as offense and defense. In the playoffs, regular season stats and rankings pretty much goes out the window...

...THAT is who I am talking to. ;)

that is mostly true except for in the case of the packers who's defense stunk for most of the season did the same crappy job against the giants. then you have the pats who also had a bad defense for the regular season who just dominated the broncos this past weekend. so you never really know. i guess that's why the game is played......

And he would be a starter on most teams in the NFL. You can probably name 10-15 he can start easily, right now. He had an incredible year his rookie year...like Matt Ryan, and everyone expected the world after that. Flacco has been a very good QB for what they needed in a QB because of their running game.

and if he has a great game against the pats i'll be sure to give him his props. i'm sure he cares what i think about him :p

What lead to GB's loss was all those turnovers....not so much the defense. How many was it ..4, 5? Who wins a game against a good team in the regular season, much less a playoff game with that many TOs?

Not everything is black and white as it seems.
