How many of those goals would tag at being "soft"?

Heatley took consecutive minor penalties, not like that could have been costly. at that point he wasn't playing very good defensively.

I don't look at goals as soft- I look at the amount given up.

My two cents on Howard- I have no idea which version I'm going to get.

Will I get the one that delivered a game 4 shutout against the Coyotes or the one that looked shaky in games 3 and 6 against Phoenix?

No excuses, wings got to play better, they will. Should be a good series.

Yes, Wings as a TEAM have to play better ..... and they will. :D

Sabre,
Howard will be fine :)
He's what, playing in his FIRST playoff in his LIFE and he's YOUNG NHL Game wise.

Why is it, if the Wings lose a game, it's Howard's fault, but if the Win, the guys won it for him ?

Sabre's your like a YoYo .....

When Detroit won 3 of their games against Phoenix, he played well (game 4 shutout, 2 goals allowed in games 5 and 7).

If Howard plays like that against the Sharks, then they can go far.

If he doesn't, then the offense (as they almost did last night) will need to play like it can when everything clicks.

Why are you so down on this guy ?

He could be in the nets for the next 10 years.

For a rookie I think he's played well for the most part.
Don't forget VET's have bad games too.

Sounds like you think they should pull him .

I'm not saying pull the guy. I'm saying that he needs to avoid having bad spurts.

Last night, in the first period, he gave up 3 goals in less than 2 minutes, a hole that Detroit was ultimately unable to dig their way out of (though they nearly did- credit to them for almost coming back to tie the game).

He has had some games where he did not have those stretches.

Games 4 and 5 against Phoenix- he played brilliantly, with a shutout in one game.

Game 7 against Phoenix- he played well.

When I watch Howard, I feel that if he can play as well as he did at times in those three games and avoid bad spurts, he can be a brick wall.

If anything, scoring first can be a key. When the Wings score first, he played a lot better than when they gave up the first goal (as we saw in games 4, 5, and 7 against Phoenix

That being said, I did think Detroit did a good job in making the Sharks sweat, getting the game close near the end and coming close to a tie.

I'm not saying the Red Wings stunk last night. I am saying that Detroit needs to avoid those bad spurts. If they're going to win, they need to jump on the Sharks early- score first, build on the lead, build confidence, make your goalie feel good about protecting that lead.

I'm not saying he should be yanked- he just needs to avoid letting in goals in waves and putting the team in a hole.

If anything, I actually think he can play better in game 2- in the Phoenix series, he bounced back well after bad games.

The first three goals should weigh as much on the D and the Wingers as much as the goalie.

Generally speaking when a goalie doesn't have a bad spell he's really good.

If no goalie let in a bad goal hear and there, it would be less interesting :D

Sometimes goalies play fabulous and still get beat.

I have Wings/Sharks going at least 6 or 7. I will be very surprised if this doesn't go 6 or to the limit. Like last year against Anaheim, this has the potential to be an epic series.

I picked the Sharks to win, but like many a playoff series, it will not be a cakewalk. If it is, I'll be stunned.

The biggest variables are the best players of the San Jose Sharks. If Thornton, Heatley, Boyle and Marleau play up to their potential the Sharks have a very good chance to win. The best players of the Wings are much more consistent, you know what you'll get from them night in and night out during the playoffs.

The pressure is especially on Joe Thornton. His legacy will be seriously damaged by yet another bad playoff series.
