2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Round 2 playoff previews

Pens over Habs in 5- Emotional letdown for Montreal. Pittsburgh now has home-ice the rest of the way in the East. Plus, I don't think Montreal can get outshot every game and win- sooner or later, they're going to have to generate more shots than the opponent.

Bruins over Flyers in 6- Philly's goaltending seems shakier than the B's.

Sharks over Wings in 6- It's their time. They have home-ice. It's now or never.

Blackhawks over Canucks in 7- This will be an epic series, but I give Chicago a slight edge.

I agree with all your picks except I like Vancouver to beat Chicago.

In fact, the Canucks are my darkhorse to win it all!

Riff's 2nd Round Picks

Ok, here are my 2nd Round Predictions...

Eastern Conference:
Pittsburgh over Montreal in 6 (secretly pulling for a Montreal upset)
Boston over Philadelphia in 7 (I admit that I flipped a coin on this one)

Western Conference:
Detroit over San Jose in 5 (San Jose continues to be a great team..on paper)
Chicago over Vancouver in 7 (Vancouver will not roll-over in this series)

The Canadiens are trying to become the ninth (out of a possible 30) 8th seed to beat the top seed since the NHL went to this playoff format in 1994.

The others................

No. 8 beats No. 1

1994 -- San Jose (8) won best-of-seven series 4-3 over Detroit (1)
1995 -- N.Y. Rangers (8) won best-of-seven series 4-2 over Quebec (1)
1998 -- Ottawa (8) won best-of-seven series 4-2 over New Jersey (1)
1999 -- Pittsburgh (8) won best-of-seven series 4-3 over New Jersey (1)
2000 -- San Jose (8) won best-of-seven series 4-3 over St. Louis (1)
2002 -- Montreal (8) won best-of-seven series 4-2 over Boston (1)
2006 -- Edmonton (8) won best-of-seven series 4-2 over Detroit (1)
2009 -- Anaheim (8) won best-of-seven series 4-2 over San Jose (1)
All are conference quarterfinal series

I remember that Chris Osgoods rookie season

I think this was the series where Ozzie went to play the puck up the boards, went to the quarter boards rigth to the Sharks player that put it past Ozzie .... Ozzie was stunned as was the Re Wing faithful ....

Remarkably, my two teams that I picked to make the East Finals- Sabres and Caps- were one-and-done.

At least my West Final- Chicago-San Jose- is still intact.

The East has the #4, 6, 7 and 8 seeds remaining and the West has 1, 2, 3, and 5.

Is this the first time that every seed number has been represented in the first round?

I just looked this up, and ironically enough, the EXACT same scenario happened in 1999.

That year the conference semifinals were:

EAST

(8) Pittsburgh vs. (4) Toronto
(7) Buffalo vs. (6) Boston (the Sabres advanced all the way to SCF where they lost to Dallas)

WEST

(5) St. Louis vs. (1) Dallas
(3) Detroit vs. (2) Colorado

No way Vancouver is going to beat Chicago! Chicago is still pissed from last year and wants revenge. They have been talking about it all week. Dont expect Chicago to just lie down and let Vancouver take the series. Its not gonna happen, and Vancouver is going to be in for a shock! Game on!

Detroit in 5?

I know the Sharks are shaky in the playoffs, but 5?

I can see it happening it 6 or 7, but San Jose won't roll over and die.

Besides, Detroit has only one day of rest. And, as we saw in games 3 and 6 against Phoenix, when they're off, they're way off.

Detroit can look like world-beaters on some nights, shaky on others.

I don't know which one will show up.

Ahhh Yes,
The ever exciting Wings / Av's yearly playoff series :D

In retrospect, I still scratch my head at how that Buffalo team got to the SCF- they barely scored 200 goals (though Miro Satan, your new boy, got 40.)

It felt like Hasek, Satan, Michael Peca, and 20 guys named Moe.

IF we knew which Wings team was showing up, we'd all sleep better !

I'm thinking the Wings / Sharks series goes 6 or 7.

Fortunately there are some off days scheduled in there, travel is difficult ...

People that are picking winners ......
Are these the teams you think will win or the ones you WANT to win ?

Speaking for myself, obviously I WANT the Bruins to win (and I think they will........the Flyers are pretty scratched up), but the others I think will win.

However, the only series that would shock me is Montreal beating Pittsburgh.

The Pens are the only prohibitive favorites in this round.

Wings / Sharks schedule

Thur. 4-29 @ SJ 9 pm

Sun. 5-2 @ SJ 8 pm (Someone tell me why we have to have a SUNDAY NIGHT game, this is the Weekend people, kids are suppose to be able to watch ).

Tues. 5-4 @ Detroit 7:30 pm

Thur. 5-6 @ Detroit 7:30 pm

Sat. 5-8 @ SJ 10:30 pm ANOTHER WEEKEND 10:30 pm start WHAT is going on here NHL

Mon. 5-10 @ Detroit 7:30 pm

Wen. 5-12 @ SJ TBD

I bet game 7 (TBD ) isn't at 10:30 pm

Anyone notice anything here ?

All the games in Detroit are weekday games and start at 7:30 ...... HELLO

NHL get your head out of your A** and schedule games when people can actually see them.

Ratings are going to be WAY down....... imagine that .

Picking Detroit in 5 makes much more sense than picking San Jose to win any playoff series. Although Phoenix was a really tough matchup for the Wings, they were also the best matchup to prepare them for San Jose. Plus, I have been watching the Wings long enough to know they are peaking...and they are getting very close. Game 1 will be a toss-up, but the Wings will have enough in the tank (almost 2-full days between games) to make it a 1-goal game.. They will be fully rested by Sunday and they usually play well on the road. Anyway, we'll find out soon enough.

Not just this round, but in the rest of the East playoffs.

In terms of teams that benefitted from a playoff upset that effects home-stadium advantage, this reminds me somewhat of when Arizona got to host the NFC Title game when the Eagles beat the Giants a few years ago.

Not that it matters a whole hill of beans in the playoffs, but here are the teams mano et mano regular season records: (I just don't see Detroit or Pittsburgh not making it through to their Conference Final)

Detroit (3-0-1) vs. San Jose (1-2-1)
Pittsburgh (3-1-0) vs. Montreal (1-3-0)
Chicago (2-2-0) vs. Vancouver (2-2-0)
Boston (2-1-1) vs. Philadelphia (2-1-1)

While anything can happen in the playoffs, and the Habs, Bruins, and Flyers can't be taken lightly...

That being said, I just have this gnawing feeling that in the East, the Penguins have what seems a free pass to the Cup Finals.

They went 0-8-2 against the Capitals and Devils- both are out. My Sabres are out too, thus meaning the East goes again through Steeltown. Talk about a gift from the hockey gods! When you get such good fortune, you need to capitalize on it... and we'll see how that goes.

Combining that with given San Jose's shaky playoff history, Chicago's somewhat inconsistent goaltending, and Vancouver's up-and-down play at times, there is a decent chance we may end up with Detroit-Pittsburgh III. (three years in a row of the same two teams- what do you think of that possibility?)
