2008 Pennant Races

Even if Cleveland did the unthinkable, the Yankees HAVE to sweep Toronto, and that is not happening.

If the Yankees somehow made it to the playoffs, this would be bigger than last year's Mets or the 1964 Phillies.

However, that ain't happening
.

If anyone believes in sports fixes, the scenario of NY actually having a chance at making the playoffs going into the final series against Boston would be the ultimate fix! It would also be the ultimate rating inducer! ;)

I KNOW! I KNOW!!!! It's bad enough we get the Yanks/Sox stuffed down our throats all season long by ESPN and FOX. To have that done again the final 3 games would be too much!

The only thing sweeter would be if those final 3 games were the last games at historic Yankee Stadium, instead of this past series against the Orioles. What were the schedule makers thinking?

This has been a pet peeve of mine here and at other websites.

Question: Would Fox/ESPN/C-SPAN/MTV or any other network "shove Yankees-Red Sox down our throats" if the ratings weren't ALWAYS there for those games?

Bill,

With all due respect...if there weren't any other choices, that would be fine. But in this day and age of EI and 3 pairings of Saturday baseball on FOX, to be fed a steady diet ALL SEASON LONG with no alternative (other than not to watch) gets pretty friggin' old. There were times this season (and in recent seasons past) when I would have much rather watched a Phillies/Mets or a Cards/Cubs game that was being played than seeing the same two lineups go at it again and again.

As a Sox fan, you are thrilled with the selection of these games week after week...as well you should be. But, c'mon...give the rest of us who aren't fans of either team a chance to watch something different once in awhile.

FYI, out here on the West Coast, I felt the same way with the Dodgers/Giants during the Bonds era.

KCK,
That's the thing, my opinion has NOTHING to do with me being a Sox fan (I actually don't like when they're on ESPN on Sunday nights).

A perfect example of this is the Dallas Cowboys. I've always despised the Cowboys, but I understand why the networks keep showing them over and over. Why wouldn't they, when the ratings are there?

This isn't a pennant race-related question, but I have to ask:

KCK, Bill, why and how exactly did the Mariners flop so badly this season? I thought before the season they might be a wild-card threat.

My biggest peeve is when you have that ESPN Sunday night game preceded by a Saturday FOX Game of the Week...two games where you have either the choice of watching or turning off...no other baseball alternatives. In the 21st century that just baffles the hell outta me.

As always, your points are well-taken and very welcomed.;)

Agreed 1,000%!!! :up

That goes double for me, my friend! :)

Sabres,
I personally thought that the Mariners were vastly overrated coming into the season. However, I did pick them for second place, but well behind the Angels.

IMO, it was a combination of poor management, poor chemistrry, bad pitching and injuries that did them in. We all thought the Mariners would be the ones the Angels would be fighting all season long. When they changed field managers mid-season it was already a sinking ship.

Also, something that has been intriguing to me these past few seasons is just how much of a say Ichiiro has behind the scenes on what goes on. I mean it was no secret that he and Mike Hargrove did not get along. How much did he force Bavasi & Co. to get rid of Grover? How much is going on in that clubhouse between players?

Bill's probably more concerned about getting the playoff ticket.

If they win or the Yanks lose, they're safe.

(BTW, I'm keeping an eye on both games- it's a slow sports night for me and the A's have been out of the playoff race since the 4th of July.)

Red Sox up 2-0.

I want them in the playoffs because:

A. It would be so sweet to see the Yankees and their billions of dollars fall short

B. I don't want Bill to get any heart attacks (He was plenty nervous in that high-scoring game with Texas)

The Brewers are more concerned about the Mets winning than the Phillies.

Philly's safe- the Brew Crew... not so much.

BTW, Milwaukee not doing themselves a favor- they're in a dogfight with the woeful Pirates.

Brewers threatening to possibly walk the plank and give the Mets a safe landing.

EDIT- Boston gets out of a bases-loaded jam.

Boston gets out of ANOTHER bases-loaded jam.

If they win this game, then Bill can breathe a sigh of relief (don't get any heart attacks, buddy!), for they'll have a safe cushion, and officially render the season-ending series with the Yankees meaningless.

Teams that are jinxed in certain places/stadiums

FSN may get rid of national programming
