2008 Pennant Races

The New York Yankees will NOT make the playoffs- it's official (though they are winning in Toronto, BTW).

The last time the Pinstripes were NOT in the playoffs, Los Angeles had TWO football teams and Fenway Park had no Monster Seats.

Boston gets out of ANOTHER bases-loaded jam.

If they win this game, then Bill can breathe a sigh of relief (don't get any heart attacks, buddy!), for they'll have a safe cushion, and officially render the season-ending series with the Yankees meaningless.

:haha:haha Sabs,
I appreciate your concern there buddy.

Three things about the Red Sox tonight:

1. They beat the best pitcher in baseball.....................who had not lost a game since July!!!!

2. They knocked the Yankees out of the playoff picture for the first time since Bill Clinton's first term!!!

3.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE:

BOSTON RED SOX

On their 5th playoff berth in six years!!!! :D

I have more examples

Last time the Yanks weren't in the playoffs:

Jon Casey was the Bruins' goalie

The Raiders were decent

The Knicks were GOOD

I could go on and on. Feel free to fill in.

Now that Bill's team is in, let's find out what he thinks about the following:

The Mets WON for a change; their bullpen didn't slip on the banana

The Brewers are walking the plank; they're having problems with the Pirates

The D-Backs are on the verge of, IMO, a bigger gag than the Mets. Remember, the Mets started badly, while Arizona got off to a hot start. Then again, the last time the Diamondbacks looked decent, I hadn't even joined this site
(Perhaps I'm a jinx)

Marlins are done; the pitching problems, but they got THIS far in the playoff chase with a tiny payroll

KCK, while your Angels are about to send the Mariners into dubious history,

I ask you: who do YOU want the Angels to face in the postseason??

Do you want another crack at the Red Sox?

Or a shot at revenge against the White Sox after the 'third strike that never was' in 2005?

The Rays?

Or, how about the Twins? 2002 all over again!

Congrats, Bill.

We're gonna meet down the line and I look forward to some good, solid, professional competition.

Thanks KCK,

that's right the Red Sox and Angels............the two best teams of THIS decade will meet next week at the Big A.

Now that the Sox have finally wrapped up a playoff berth, I have a question for you KCK:

There's been a lot of discussion on sports radio and various Internet message boards about which ALDS schedule the Angels (they'll have the choice because of having the best record in the AL) will choose:

ALDS (A): Wed/Fri @ LA, Sun/Mon @ Boston, Wed @ LA
OR
ALDS (B): Thur/Fri @ LA, Sun/Mon @ Boston, Wed @ LA

As you can see, the only difference between A and B is an extra day off in series "A".

The Red Sox had this option against the Angels last year and chose the extra day off (allowing Beckett and Schilling to pitch two games EACH if the series went five games).

The speculation here in Boston (at least the majority that I've heard) is that the Angels will choose the "B" option. Why? Because the back end of the Angels rotation (Weaver/Garland) is stronger than the Red Sox (Wakefield/Byrd). I personally agree from the Angels perspective that would be the right move. The thought is Beckett/Lester/Matsuzaka vs. Lackey/Saunders/Santana cancels each other out, and the Angels would have a distinct advantage in a battle of the #4 starters in the all important game 4.

I apologize for this long-winded question :D, but what is the word in Angel land on this?

Not to answer for KCK, but the Angels can only play the Red Sox (most likely) or the Rays in the ALDS.

Price of gasoline the last time the Yankees missed the playoffs? Anyone?

The Yankees, Marlins, and Cardinals were all eliminated from postseason contention tonight.

Boston wins, Yankees out, TBS is crying, and Bill can officially breathe a sigh of relief.

WHY is TBS crying, they are acually looking pretty good, they have a lot of Top markets in the playoffs and the TB story to carry on.

You've got Boston, LA and probably Chicago in the AL
and you have LA, Chicago , Philly/ NY Mets in the NL

So I would say they still have a very good large market representation and the TB story !

I agree Jimbo, if TBS gets Mets-Cubs and Dodgers-Phillies as their NLDS matchups...........they will be doing back flips!

The Phillies lose, and both the Mets and Brewers win.

The Phillies magic number to clinch the NL East remains at 4.
The Phillies magic number to clinch a playoff berth remains at 3.

The Mets magic number to clinch a playoff berth is down to 5.

The D-Backs lost and the Dodgers are winning big vs. the hapless Padres.

The Dodgers magic number to clinch the NL West is down to 4, but will more than likely be down to 3 before the end of the night.

What exactly is the reason for Arizona's horrific spiral since Memorial Day?

IMO, this would be as bad as the Mets- they looked unbeatable at the start of the year, unlike the Mets.

When I first joined DBSForums, the D-Backs were supposedly as good as the Angels. I guess they are a desert fraud.

What happened to thier pitching ?
Is it injured, or is it the bats that have gone silent ?

The AL Central is getting very interesting indeed.

The Twins defeated the White Sox tonight, and are now only 1.5 games behind the ChiSox:
Chicago.................86-70...................-
Minnesota.............85-72..................1.5

The series continues Wed. and Thursday nights in the Metrodome:

Wed: Buehrle vs. Blackburn
Thurs: Floyd vs. Slowey

After that, the Twins host the Royals (F-Sa-Su) and the White Sox host the Indians (F-Sa-Su). Also, if necessary the White Sox will host the Tigers on Monday, (makeup game) IF EITHER the Twins or Sox have a half game lead after Sunday.
