2008-09 MLB Hot Stove

Detroit wasn't interested in paying $20M for his broken arm. You will be lucky if he stays healthy for the duration of his contract.

Yeah, well your just jealous. :p

And word on the streets is that Wood signed for only 2 years at $10 million a year. That's still 80% less than what K-Rod just signed for, plus we're tied up for 1 year less.

Score!!!

Mets In Talks For Putz

By Tim Dierkes [December 10 at 8:51pm CST]
8:40pm: MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince says the three teams "appear to be on the verge" of a deal. He says that if the deal goes through the Mariners would get Gutierrez and the Indians would get Joe Smith and Mariners prospect Luis Valbuena. Heilman and Jeremy Reed would also be involved in some capacity. Graziano suggests not all of the players in the trade have been decided upon. Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik admitted a proposal is on the table.
8:06pm: Rosenthal softened the language of his post - he now says the Mets are trying/working to acquire Putz rather than close to a deal. He also mentions that the deal would involve one or more prospects.
8:00pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are close to acquiring Mariners reliever J.J. Putz in a three-team trade. Putz and K-Rod will be quite a late inning tandem. The Indians are also involved in the trade. Other players in the mix: Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, Mike Carp, and Franklin Gutierrez. Rosenthal is not sure yet who's heading where.
Dan Graziano has the story as well, but does not mention the Indians.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Wednesday

By Tim Dierkes [December 10 at 8:45pm CST]
8:45pm: Dave Sheinin says the Nationals offered eight years and $160MM, and Ladson now agrees.
5:38pm: Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun says the Orioles met with Boras last night and apparently made an offer. However, Peter Schmuck says the nine-year, $180MM report was "met with incredulity from O's officials."
5:33pm: According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson, the Nationals offered Tex an eight-year, $180MM contract. Dave Sheinin talked to a Nationals exec who said in general about the rumors, "Ninety percent of this stuff is pure fabrication."
2:35pm: Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times has the Nats willing to offer ten years at more than $20MM per and the Orioles willing to do nine years also at at least $20MM per year.
1:27pm: Ken Rosenthal and Ed Price heard Teixeira would prefer to be on the East Coast for family reasons. It could be an issue for the Angels.
1:14pm: Yahoo's Jose Mota (new guy) says the Nationals made an offer to Tex for at least seven years and $150MM.
12:44pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman talked to two high-ranking baseball officials who predicted Teixeira will get a $200MM deal. Heyman believes two teams already bid $160MM.
11:17am: Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post has heard the Yankees' signing of C.C. Sabathia takes them out of the running for Tex. The Angels, Red Sox, Nationals, and Orioles will battle for the Boras client.
9:36am: Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times talks about Mark Teixeira:
The Boston Red Sox have emerged as front-runners, and the Washington Nationals, who appear willing to offer eight years and $160 million, could make the most lucrative bid. The Baltimore Orioles are in hot pursuit, the Yankees are lurking, and the Angels are growing more concerned that Teixeira might be slipping away, primarily because they'd like to sign him for six or seven years, not the eight or nine it might take.

Mets Acquire Putz In Three-Team Deal

By Tim Dierkes [December 10, 2008 at 11:02pm CST]
11:02pm: Geoff Baker says the Mariners got three additional minor leaguers from the Mets: pitcher Maikel Cleto, outfielder Ezequiel Carrera, and pitcher Jason Vargas.
10:17pm: MLB.com's Jim Street confirmed the deal. The Mariners give up Putz, Green, and Reed and get Heilman, Chavez, Carp, and Gutierrez. The Indians give up Gutierrez and get Valbuena and Smith. The Mets give up Heilman, Chavez, Carp, and Smith to get Putz, Green, and Reed.
The Mets succeeded in overhauling their bullpen without giving up premium pieces. Assuming Putz and K-Rod are healthy, they'll be playing seven-inning games.
The Mariners can try Heilman the rotation, and add good outfield depth. I'm kind of lukewarm on the Indians' benefit.
10:02pm: Geoff Baker says a previous incarnation with the Rays instead of the Mets fell apart. In that deal, the Tigers would've included Jeff Larish.
9:27pm: Rosenthal has an update:
Under terms of the deal, the Mets would get Putz, outfielder Jeremy Reed and reliever Sean Green. The Mariners would receive reliever Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman Mike Carp from the Mets. They'd also get Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians and minor leaguers. The Indians would get reliever Joe Smith from the Mets and infielder Luis Valbuena from Seattle.
David Lennon seems to agree.
9:06pm: Jon Heyman says the Mets would surrender six players in this blockbuster.
8:40pm: MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince says the three teams "appear to be on the verge" of a deal. Met's, I see we got reliever Joe Smith out of the deal. I also see he's a young kid (only 24), so he doesn't have an established career to evaluate. What's the scouting report on Smith?

More info on the Cameron to NYY deal:

Yankees like Cameron AND Hall - JSOnline

But here’s the interesting part – the Yankees would like to expand the trade to include Brewers third baseman Bill Hall. The Brewers were giving serious consideration to expanding the deal if what they received in return for Hall made sense to them.

Here’s an interesting part of all of these talks: Not only are Cameron and Sabathia close; Hall and Sabathia have become very close friends. They spent last weekend attending sporting events together, including the De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight here in Vegas.

So, not only will Sabathia be delighted to hear Cameron is joining him, he’d really be ecstatic if Hall joined the trading party.

Ramirez to the Yankees?

According to the Daily News........

One baseball official told the Daily News that the Yankees' interest in Ramirez is more than cursory, that they see the slugger as the perfect complement in their lineup to Alex Rodriguez, forming a 1-2 punch like he did in Boston with David Ortiz.

The official believes that the Yankees are "going hard" after Ramirez, to the point where they are willing to give him a three-year deal worth from $22 million to $25 million per year.

Financially, I would think it would be cheaper than going after Mark Teixeira because they would only have him a couple of years before his skills deminish AND they can put him at DH, where they don't have to put him on the field. Where Teixiera wants a long term deal close to 200 million dollars.

On a political side note....and I might get in trouble for this. I don't know about you, but in these tough economical times I feel a little dirty reading and talking about all these millions being throw around while people are losing their homes and their jobs. But maybe that's me.....:(

But since money is no object for the Yankees, why NOT go after Teixiera?

I'm going to agree with our hyperbolic friend here...on both counts. Although I would feel a lot guiltier if it were me getting paid the millions.

On a baseball note, I think Texeira would be a better acquisition than Manny. He plays a position where we need help, and is an outstanding fielder. Plus, he's normal. And since we're talking about what to me is like monopoly money, I really don't care if Texeira will cost more. I think he's the best fit for the Yankees.
