X-Box, Playstation, and Wii Game News

And that's why when I buy a game, I buy physical media.

The exceptions are when it's digital only or a really awesome deal (and even then I look for deals on a physical disc if it's a game I really like).

It depends on the situation. In this case buying physical media would have made absolutely no difference. They temporarily shut down Origin in this country. When you buy a physical copy of a PC game that requires Origin, Steam, uPlay, etc you still have to redeem your CD key on that service to verify that you have a legal copy. If Origin is temporarily shut down you won't have any better luck trying to play your physical copy of Mass Effect 3 than someone who bought it digitally from Origin.

Not only that but PC games often contain only a small fraction of the game on disc and you have to download the rest. For example, I bought a physical copy of Doom on PC from Amazon because their 20% off for Prime members only works on physical copies. The box they sent me came with one DVD that can hold up to 8.5GB of data even though the game is probably 50GB+. Even if you weren't required to redeem your CD key on Steam in order to play Doom good luck playing your physical copy without the other 40GB+ of data that needs to be downloaded.

Star Wars Battlefront was even worse. The physical copy of that game doesn't even include a disc. It's just a DVD case with a CD key inside. The point is that unless you are buying the rare PC game that is DRM free, offers a physical release, and includes 6 DVDs like The Witcher 3 physical copies are basically useless.

Even on consoles where they use 50GB blu-ray discs there are games like The Master Chief collection that don't fit on the disc and require you to download the rest as a patch. Then there are the games like Destiny and The Division that require a constant internet connection. This isn't even taking into account all the games that are basically broken until you get the day one patch. The last 2 console generations have really taken us past the point where you are going to be able to pop a disc in 20 years down the road after the servers have been shut down and get the full experience from your games.

This is the xbox/ps/wii thread, so my comments about physical media was directed to those.

If it was PC, I'll typically just download a "patch" that removes the copy protection for games that I own.

There's a small Rocket League documentary coming next week.

I watched both parts of this last night. With Rocket League maybe being my most played game of all time it was really interesting seeing a behind the scenes look at how it happened. I'm also very familiar with Danny O'Dywer from all his guest appearances on Giant Bomb content.

There were a couple really interesting things in this documentary. They aren't allowed to say how many copies of the game they gave out through PS Plus due to their contract with Sony but they did make a point of saying that 22 million people have played the game and they have sold 8 million copies. That is a little misleading though because they had a free weekend on Xbox One and he said that some of those people were different accounts playing on the same console and not separate copies of the game purchased/downloaded from PS Plus.

The footage of Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars was also really interesting to me. I had never even heard of that game until after the sequel, Rocket League, came out. The graphics obviously weren't as nice because it was a PS3 game but the actual gameplay looks very similar. It never caught on the way Rocket League did but it makes you wonder if that would have been a huge game if it launched on PS Plus the way Rocket League did.

Apparently the developers of Mighty No 9 still haven't finished the 3DS or Vita versions, and many of the physical goods that were perks haven't even been sent to the manufacturer.

Reviews are coming in for Infinite Warfare. General consensus seems to be quite positive, with a number of people really praising the campaign. I think I'll try that out for myself tonight.

This was mentioned in the Xbox thread but here is the new Mass Effect Andromeda trailer. I'm looking forward to this more than I have with any game in a very long time. This will definitely be a day one purchase for me.The trailer is good but the real reason I'm excited is just because it's more of my favorite series of all time.

With Infinite Warfare selling notably less than previous games in the series, with many pointing to multiplayer revamp as a negative, I just wanted to share this photo I took of the player count for Black Ops 1 (which came out 6 years ago today.) Keep in mind this was just for the 360 version, so it doesn't count PS3 or PC numbers.

I posted this in the Overwatch thread but figured it would do more good here.

Overwatch will be having a free weekend for 11/18-11/21. Unlike the last one they did a few months ago, PC users will be included as well.

If for some reason you haven't played it yet, king3pj and I HIGHLY recommend you take advantage of this free weekend. And if you need some people to teach you the ropes, I'm sure the two of us can help out. The game isn't nearly as intimidating as it seems.

Hopefully Sombra and the new Arcade mode will be live for this free weekend.

Review embargo for Watch Dogs 2 is up and reviews are coming in. The general consensus seems to be very positive, a vast improvement over the first. A number of places are comparing the jump in quality to that of Assassin's Creed 2 over 1. Maybe I'll give this a look next year when it comes out at 50% off and most of the PC performance issues are ironed out.

I actually had a decent time with the first game. It definitely had it's problems and the escape at the end of the game really sucked but I definitely didn't hate it. The idea of a significantly improved sequel sounds good to me. There are just too many games I am more interested in to even think about playing it right now. Like Dishonored 2 and Mafia 3 I'll probably be waiting until Watch Dogs 2 is in the $20-$30 range before I buy it.

I had no idea this game even existed until now. Looks like it's SSX with more social features. Guess I'll try it out.
Random note: While I was watching the video I was steeping my tea. Maybe it's a sign of good things to come.

Yeah, I remember seeing a teaser for this during E3 but I haven't heard anyone talk about it since. It definitely doesn't have much buzz for a game coming out in 2 weeks.

Also doesn't help that Overwatch is having a free weekend at the same time. I mean I realize that one is a beta while the other is a free weekend but it's still a free game that will have a larger player base.

I thought this was kind of funny.

For those who don't know what is going on in this picture those stickers are supposed to be attached to bags of Doritos. They have Titanfall 2 codes for exclusive Target weapon, Titan, and, character skins as well as double XP. Apparently someone who works at Target or Doritos sent him an entire roll of the stickers. Hopefully he didn't get someone fired by posting the picture to Twitter.
