I am wanting to replace my 811/508 combo on my main tv. but i realy want to know if it is work it or not..

also i have seen 921's going fot about $350 my dad has one and it seams to work ok most of the time. i want some real opinions about this subject.

Hi,

As goaliebob said while I was typing this, wait for the 622 in MARCH. An exectutive, I won't mention the name, said new HD programing come March will be in MPEG4.

Funny, I received such a great offer from the local cable company which included 24 hour install that I called to cancel my E* account, and the CSR said the exact same thing about March and MPEG4. He even offered the 942 for the new customer price, but in the same breath said he would not recommend me taking him up on the offer...

I have a 921 and its been pretty good for me this past year. But I too am itching to upgrade. I was thinking about the 942, but with the Feb launch just a few weeks away, it really is worthwhile to hold out for a MPEG-4 capable receiver.

We know that MPEG-4 is coming, so a 942 days are definately numbered. Dish might have a decent offer for existing customers, but would it be better than waiting a few months instead? Likely not.

Besides, this new unit supposely has the ethernet connector, so it at least seems to be built to last for a long while. I'm sure Dish is getting ready for multi-year STB migration plan to crank up. I doubt that they would want to come back and replace any post 2005 receivers for any reason while enduring this expensive operaton.

I think that this is why the only new receivers launched are now HD capable. This will also allow them to standardize on only a few models of receivers. Aside from periodic Hard Drive size increases, the 622 may be Dish's only new DVR for the next few years.

You really think Dish is going to come out with the MPEG-4 in February?? Look at the record. Get the 942 and enjoy. It will be a while. In the first place only new subscribers will be converted to MPEG-4. Then existing lease customers will be upgraded and finally......regular customers will be able to buy the new equipment. This accofrding to a spokesman in the executive offices. Don't hold your breath.

Is it me or does time stand still? It seems its always something better is coming real soon but it never happens. Ive had this junk 811 for over a year now waiting for mpg4 so I could get a pvr hd reciever. Still waiting now for the 622. jeez.

So, the 942 will not be MPEG4 capable then? My Dish guy said he thought it might be upgradeable but was not sure. I'm getting a Dish upgrade today (I hope) that will allow me to see all HD and VOOM HD so I would love a recorder capable of HD. I think it is worth it to enjoy now and change later but the cost is certainly a factor... So, if the answer is "No, the 942 is not upgradeable", then would it be worth it to go for a cheaper, older, HD PVR or stick with the 942?
Thank you.

I wonder if it would be cheaper to buy one of those new 921's for $349 (or a used one) and get the free/reduced upgrade to the MPEG-4 receiver or just wait until the MPEG-4 receiver comes out and see what kind of deal we can get. My bet would be on waiting for the MPEG-4 to come out and be out for a while and drop in price.

No longer waving shipping fees.. is this true?
