It has been well established that the Bengals were the worst team of the 1990s and that their 14-straight non-winning seasons from 1991-2004 was one of the worst runs in NFL history.

IMO, there was a team far worse than those Bungles- the Tanpa Bay Buccaneers from 1983-1996 (14 straight losing seasons as well).

I know ramy and brainfry will disagree, but here's my case for the Buccaneers as being worse than the Bengals ever were, even in their 1990s nadir:

1. Cincinnati, from 1991-2004, had three 8-8 seasons and went 7-9 once during that stretch. Tampa had 10 or more losses EVERY YEAR from 1983-1994. Cincinnati got up to 5-straight 10-loss seasons.

2. The Bengals had decent players; Boomer, Munoz, Carl Pickens, Ocho Cinco- while Tampa had the inconsistent Vinny Interceptaverde and little else.

3. Better team colors and logo.

What would YOU rather look like? Scayr tiger stripes or a hairdresseer/Creamsicle?

How about the Lions.
They have not been in the playoffs since Barry Sanders played in what 1991 ?

Thats 17 years ...

Did the Lions actually WIN a playoff game that year, if so they got demolished by Washington in the next game.

Correction, they have been in the playoffs since then, but have not WON since then.

That said, they have not been in the playoffs since 1999

Made the playoffs in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997 AND 1999.

Besides, at least the Lions had a better logo.

Do you consider an 8-8 team truely a playoff contender or just someone filling a spot?
I bet the percentage of 8 or 9 win teams advancing is very small.

Jimbo

Neither.

At least the Buccaneers won a Super Bowl and the Bengals have played in two Super Bowls.

One NFL franchise has one :eek::eek: playoff win in 61 years. Just an unbelievable string of futility............I give you the Chicago/St. Louis/Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals, the worst franchise in the history of North American professional sports!!!!

I agree; they are trying hard this season, but I agree with the above.

Lions a close second, 1 playoff win in 51 years (and counting).

I think the lions qualify for the worse in this decade 2000 till now.

2000 8-8
2001 2-14
2002 3-13
2003 5-11
2004 6-10
2005 5-11
2006 3-13
2007 7-9

2000 to present (08 not included) 39-89

This year could be 0-16, 0-6 so far.

Don't forget the 24 game road winless streak

You have actually found WORSE ???

Jimbo

Lions had 6, 10 + loss season just in THIS decade.

Yes, but last year stopped the streak.

6 in a row is only half of what Tampa Bay had.

IMO, Tampa Bay's 13 consecutive 10-loss seasons is an NFL record that will never be broken.

2000 to present (08 not included) 39-89

Tampa Bay went 26-85 from 1983-1989. That's a dozen fewer wins!

Just because thy got lucky and won a 7th game doesn't mean that they are not one of the worst teams to date.

Just to further my point if I may,

The following is the all-time playoff standings (by wins not winning pct.):

1. Cowboys.................32-24
2. Steelers..................28-19
3. Raiders...................25-18
3. 49ers.....................25-17
3. Packers.................25-15
6. Redskins...............23-17
7. Patriots................21-13
8. Dolphins..............20-19
8. Giants.................20-23
10. Rams................19-24
11. Vikings.............18-24
12. Broncos...........17-15
12. Colts................17-17
12. Eagles..............17-17
15. Bears...............16-17
16. Bills..................14-15
16. Titans...............14-18
18. Browns............11-20
19. Chargers.........9-14
20. Jets.................8-11
20. Chiefs..............8-13
22. Lions.................7-10
22. Seahawks.........7-10
24. Panthers.............6-3
24. Falcons................6-8
24. Buccaneers.........6-9
27. Jaguars...............5-6
27. Bengals...............5-8
27. Ravens...............5-3
30. Saints.................2-6
30. Cardinals...........2-5
32. Texans...............0-0

So ONLY the Houston Texans have less postseason wins than the Cardinals.

A team that has been in existence since 19 freakin' 20!!!!

Bill,

I will concede to you that the Cardinals have been far worse than either Cincy or Tampa. (They could be the NFL's equivalent of the Tampa Bay Rays- they have exciting and talented players)

However, I'll ask you: if you had to choose between either Cincinnati in the 1990s or Tampa Bay from the mid-80s until Dungy was hired, which of those two was worse?

Okay fine, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the second worse team in that time frame..........behind the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cards have been in the league since 1920 and have only been in the playoffs 7 times ?

I rest my case, Lions have a ways to go to beat that record.
I don't know what year the kittens started playing , but they are only 7 - 10, 17 measly playoff games in all that time, and they were dominant in the '50's

Jimbo, you're right...........good point.

The seven playoff games since 1920, is even more mind-boggling than the two wins.
