Wired Reviews The Hopper with Sling

Thanks, this helps clarify things. Agreed it's really for redundancy. I usually see the BACKUP comment when people are comparing the number of tuners on the Hopper vs. Genie. Usually when one person states the Genie has five, the Hopper person says you can get two Hoppers for six tuners. But again, if one goes out, you will lose all the recorded shows on that Hopper. I guess that's better than losing all shows.

Perhaps DirecTV will allow users to have two Genies on one account in the future. Then you could have ten tuners and redundancy. :)

Dish allowed us to get four Hoppers, 12 sat tuners :) . One amazing thing that Dish's receivers have is the ability to archive movies/shows to external hard drives and they function on any receiver in the house. DirecTV doesn't have that level of backup.

DirecTV doesn't have that level of backup.
From a pure technical standpoint, I also have a problem with using the term "backup" when referencing EHD usage, since a title transferred to an EHD is NOT a true backup (copy of the original for archival purposes), unless you then record another re-airing of the the show to the DVR. Just saying.

Don't be nerdy, lol. Not everyone knows/cares about the difference in terms. Yes, the EHDs are used for archival, which I clearly stated, and not a true backup, but as I said not everyone cares about the terminology. It's like megabit vs mebibit, megabyte vs megabit, battery vs cell, you name it.

Well, I was just following along the same thought process that confused the other guy on "backup" of Hoppers...didn't want anyone to think that an EHD is a true backup either. :p

The other aspect is how often the user has to act on the device to "back it up." For EHD, can you set it to automatically transfer/copy content to the EHD on a nightly cycle? Or, does the user have to perform this action every time. If the user has to manually perform this action every time, it's not a backup in my mind.

Good point, lol.

It's not backup but rather archival. User has to manually initiate. Either way, still far better than DirecTV's solution. "True" backups are not allowed because of DRM.
