CNET discussing fears about MS ushering in the end of the Desktop: http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57576474-75/with-windows-blue-comes-fear-of-desktops-demise/
What would it take for you to (comfortably) move on from the desktop? What would W8 or W9 need to do? I have a hard time imagining it. It's pretty simple usage at this point, really just a handful of files/shortcuts I suppose. I love me some change but this is a tough one to imagine. Even on my Mac my desktop ends up just being a collection of random files that I didn't put explicitly in the Downloads or Documents folders... and a bunch of screenshots. I use Alfred/Spotlight for everything. At home on my desktop I use the Windows 8 search to launch almost everything. Even on my tablet, the Start menu is less OCD'd than my desktop, as I only use it for specific things. I'm not sure I even want my desktop and tablet start screens to sync, would probably spend some time to re-organize it/them then to tailor it to both uses.
Interesting times.
