I have a few DP301 units currently on my Dish Network 500 satellite dish and I recently discovered that my LNB has gone out for satellite 119. I'm probably going to move up to HD by this winter so I'd like to have an HD capable satellite when I do move up. My question is if I go ahead and buy a 1000.x satellite with the 110, 119, and 129 LNBs will this work for my current DP301 receivers? If so, what satellite do I need to buy? I've noticed 1000.2 and 1000.4 satellites for sale.

:welcome to SatelliteGuys!

The good news for you is that the satellites are owned or leased by Dish, saving you from having to shell out millions to get your own.

The dish that will work with your 301 is the original Dish 1000 or current Dish 1000.2. The 1000.4 won't work because nearly all the programming sent across the 61.5-72.7-77 slots is MPEG-4 and the 301 is only MPEG-2.

The dish you may need for your eventual HD upgrade, though, may turn out to be the 1000.4. It depends on which satellite carries your HD locals (if available) and RSN.

Why not just move to HD a few months early? The dish upgrade will be included saving you from having to buy it.

I did not know that. When I called Dish Network a few months ago I was told in the past that it would be an additional $5 a month for the HD channels on an HD receiver or $10 a month to use the HD receiver in non HD mode.
