Wii u

The online problems with this game actually go even deeper than I thought. This is from the IGN review. They gave the game a 9.0.

Online mode supports up to 12-players, and Nintendo gets a lot of mileage out of Mario Kart 8’s basic online features. It’s easy to join races, setup tournaments, and even upload highlight videos to YouTube, but once again, Nintendo’s den mother attitude rears its head: Chat is restricted to lobbies with friends only. There’s no option to invite friends into a game, and Mario Kart 8 also doesn't provide message notifications. This is seriously disappointing because you have to use outside means to coordinate friends-only races. These omissions often make Mario Kart 8 feel like a fancy import Ferrari with an old ham radio built into the dashboard.

Considering what happens in the chats in xbox games, and nintendo's target audience of children, is it any surprise in game chat is restricted.

No. I think it's fine that they decided to limit chat to friends only so kids can't talk to random internet strangers. That could be handled with parental controls instead like it is on the 360 but most parents would never know how to turn it on so I can see why they did that.

Limiting it to just the lobby is different though. How is it more dangerous for kids to talk to their friends during the race than it is in the pre and post race lobby? They did enough due diligence by only letting players talk to people on their friends list.

The lack of voice chat during races is probably some technical hurdle they couldn't figure out how to get over even though games have been offering this on the original Xbox since 2002. I can't really think of any reason for allowing chat in the lobby but not in the race.

Maybe they'll patch it in later. Doesn't really affect me since I don't see myself playing online. Still a glaring oversight for other users.

And how is it a "body control device"? The 1996 Patent description seems more like the Kinect.

As for the other patent, it was filed in 2009 and issued just this past year. Wii's been out a lot longer than that, since 2006.

Also, wouldn't PlayStation Move be affected, since it's pretty much the same as the Wiimote?

This lawsuit will go nowhere, as the patent that affects the wii was filed 3 years after the wii came out, and looks like it pretty much just copies the 3 year old willmote. That patent will easily be invalidated.

Instead of derailing the Watch Dogs thread even more I decided to move a more appropriate place. I have been using my 3DS XL as much as any other gaming platform lately. I have been playing it almost every night while I watch Tigers games. This is really my introduction to Nintendo gaming because the NES was the only Nintendo console I owned as a kid.

I don't have the nostalgia for Nintendo franchises that most gamers my age do but I am really surprised by how much enjoyment I am getting out of A Link Between Worlds and Pokemon X. They are just solid games and flat out fun. This is making me start to question my opinion that Nintendo makes games for kids, not me. Yes they are kid friendly but I'm finding that they can be fun for me too.

With all the gaming platforms I own and backlog of games I have for each of those platforms it would be silly for me to add another console to the mix. Still, Nintendo is selling refurbished Wii Us for $200 with an included game. That's a very reasonable price that could make me pull the trigger.

If they would let us pick from a list of games instead of Nintendo Land I would do it right now. I have no interest in that game. If I could have a refurbished system and Windwaker HD, Super Mario 3D World, Pikman 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, or even $40 in virtual console credit for that $200 I would bite.

Nintendo announces a GameCube controller adapter. Could GC Virtual Console offerings be coming as well?

I think this is probably for Smash Bros. As weird as this sentence sounds, I guess the professional Smash Bros. community has been asking for a GameCube controller. I keep hearing about how that is the serious way to play that series even though the 360-style Pro Controller seems like it should be fine to me. I guess I never owned a GameCube so I never developed the love for that controller. I did think the wireless version was cool back before Sony and Microsoft started making those for their systems though.

I agree that they need to start pumping out GC virtual console games too though. The Wii could play GC games and the Wii U has backwards compatibility for Wii so does that mean the Wii U can play GC games? Either way they have such a huge library of classic games. That's their biggest strength. Right now they are suffering from a lack of games for their home console so it seems like they should be cranking out VC games like crazy to fill in the gaps.

Edit: Wait is that really using both USB ports? I guess I don't know what else you need those ports for but it seems silly to have one peripheral take up both of them.

Well my point is that I seriously doubt Nintendo would bother putting the resources into making such a device if the sole purpose was to allow people to use a GC Controller on SSB 4. This isn't going to help push Wii U(nits). Anyone who has a Wii U at this point got it A: With the understanding that a new SSB would be on it, and B: That no gamecube ports meant no gamecube controller access. While the idea of bringing GC games to the Wii U VC (or even hardware wise) would be nice, it's not really going to help fix the problem that the Wii U has no NEW games on it. I mean technically the Wii U has the largest library available of games available due to the fact that it has BC with the Wii. But no one wants to play those games anymore.

I always thought the GC Controller was slightly overrated. It wasn't a bad controller but you can't tell me that C-stick was great. And admittedly the GC controller was my controller of choice when I used to play SSBB, but I don't see myself getting this.

Power, it's the same with some external HDD that need 2 USB ports, as 1 doesn't supply enough current.

Yeah but I don't know of many peripherals that require 2 Ports. A hard drive I somewhat understand since they can take more power as they have moving parts, but how much power can a controller adapter use? Maybe they figure since there's 4 ports on the device that they have plenty of slots to spare, but it just seems like a weird requirement. Of course this is still early and I guess this could change.

Just found out that the Wii U USB ports are 2.0, so it's likely their splitting the controller ports between both ports for better bandwidth.

Just to put into perspective how bad Nintendo is doing profit wise, Candy Crush made more money in the first quarter of this year than Nintendo made for the ENTIRE year of 2013..

Someone on twitter made a great point about how backward and behind Nintendo is... we have everyone sharing great clips and videos from their next gen consoles, while all of the viral videos and gifs of Mario Kart and other games are off-screen with cell phone cameras.

They are completely out of touch when it comes to fan service. Last year they made the EVO fighting game tournament pull Smash Bros. from the tournament as soon as they found out about it. Yes, they went back on that decision when the realized how much bad press they created but the fact that they wanted it pulled in the first place shows how out of touch they are.

Now they have been crapping all over youtube users who create let's play videos. This is free advertising that all the other developers and publishers embrace. Nintendo hits youtube with copyright claims and takes all the advertising revenue from these streams. People are a whole lot less likely to feature your games on their let's play videos when you steal all the ad money from them.

They just announced a youtube affiliate program after all the backlash they have been getting about this for the last year or so to finally let youtube content creators have some of the ad revenue. The problem is that in addition to Google, you have to split your revenue with Nintendo too.

With all the bad press they have been getting it seems like they would learn to quit treating their most hard core fans like criminals. Trying to remove Smash from a huge fighting game tournament is the opposite of what they should be doing. They should be embracing big events like that. They should probably even be sponsoring the tournament. The same goes for let's play creators. These are the people who are evangelizing your games when no one wants to buy them. Instead of embracing that they try to shut it down.

It really feels like Nintendo is full of really old guys who made all the original games/hardware or something that are just completely out of touch and want all the kids to get off their lawn. i thought this was a fairly incestuous industry with people all over, but Nintendo seems to contradict that, silo'd away somewhere away from modern technology and civilization.

Now think about how outrageous and sarcastic that statement is, then read this: http://www.vg247.com/2014/01/12/nintendo-executives-unfamiliar-with-psn-xbox-live-says-anon-dev/

“We got the chance to talk to some more senior people in Nintendo, via a phone conference, as they were gathering feedback on our development experiences and their toolchain,” the developer wrote.

“The discussion started off well enough and covered off our experiences with the hardware and (slow) toolchain and then we steered them towards discussing when the online features might be available. We were told that the features, and the OS updates to support them, would be available before the hardware launch, but only just. There were apparently issues with setting up a large networking infrastructure to rival Sony and Microsoft that they hadn’t envisaged.

“This was surprising to hear, as we would have thought that they had plenty of time to work on these features as it had been announced months before, so we probed a little deeper and asked how certain scenarios might work with the Mii friends and networking, all the time referencing how Xbox Live and PSN achieve the same thing. At some point in this conversation we were informed that it was no good referencing Live and PSN as nobody in their development teams used those systems (!) so could we provide more detailed explanations for them?”
