The Minus Man - 3 stars: Great cast, good acting, confusing story. Even so, it was enough to hold my attention. In a nutshell, an odd-ball serial killer (Owen Wilson) travels the country looking for victims using his odd-ball selection criteria. He winds up renting a room from an unhappy married couple (Brian Cox & Mercedes Ruehl), finds work as a postal employee, and forms a relationship with his girlfriends (Janeane Garafalo). The TV Guide On Screen summary says these people are taken in by his winning smile....but if you ask my opinion, I can't see how any rube would think it to be anything other than the sh*t eatin' grin of a sociopath in need of dental work. Anyway, Wilson battles his demons: normal versus abnormal, routine versus impulse, ying versus yang, etc. Not bad and certainly worth a looksie.

Seeds of Doubt 2.5 a thriller type of movie in which a guy is sent to prison for the wrong reason (I guess?). A little bit tiring to reveal the identity of the one committing the murders and at the end still more confusion. The reporter was made to be as a hot woman when in fact she was far from it. Somewhat entertaining but dissapointed in the movie.

Joy Ride 3.0 three friends steal a car and this has consequences beyond of what they expected. The theme of the movie is a little superficial and the acting is somewhat ok but not at its finest althought there are a couple of good actors in the movie. The blonde skinless scenes are the best the movie offers.

The Wolf Man (1941) 4.0 stars This is a story that is quite familiar to all us now. In 1941 this movie was probably gold and still I believe it is today. It is quite a familiar story but the acting and the script is excellent. The movie itself is B&W OAR (1:37:1) but do not be fool; it looks quite good and acceptable. There is one editing mistake in the movie and that is when the Wolf Man enters his father's house after being beaten by the Wolf. I really liked it and it is great to see this classic!

Ghost of Frankeinstein (1942) 3.0 stars. This story has a different spin from the Frankeinstein stories. This one happens after Dr. Frankenstein death and Ygor is left in charge of the "monster". The story keeps you interested for a while but the end is a little dissapointing after the surgery. B&W OAR 1:37:1

The Long Walk Home 4.0 stars. Excellent movie with a great cast of actors. The story of discrimination based on race and color that does not get old with time. It is unimaginable to think of something like this but not hard to believe it.

House of Dracula (1945) 3.0 stars. What do you get when Count Dracula, The Wolf Man and Frankeinstein happen to be in the same movie and in the same house. Quite a different story of what I have seen before. A scientist tries to cure them all but you can't count on Dracula to make things easy.

Shades of Fear 1.5 stars. An aviator sails on a boat that is supposed to be filled with a murder mystery. The story is a little weak and the love story too artificial to be believable.

Magnificent Seven - 4.5 stars: Great cast (Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steven McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn), great acting, great story...a Classic American Western. What more can I say other than, Da da, da da da daaaaaa...da da, da da da daaa...da da da da da da da da da...da, da da da da da daaaaaa." Enjoy!

Hitler: The Last Ten Days - 3 stars: Sir Alec Guinness does a masterful job portraying Adolf Hitler in his final days; there is a chilling likeness both physically and mentally. This film was 4:3 AOR with some B/W footage from WWII. It's worth of look if you're into history or WWII.

Halloween - 4 stars: A de facto scare flick! I don't know what was more scary...the movie, or John Carpenter's original score; the music alone will scare the pants off a ya. Even with VOOM-Lite, this flick looked and sounded very good (2.35:1). Donald Pleasence (Escape from New York) and Jamie Lee Curtis (My Girl) do an excellent job.

Halloween 4.0 stars delightful movie that still makes you scare. Best in the series and an original story from John Carpenter. This was actually a low budget independent film made by Carpenter. The original score was also composed by Carpenter himself. In his documentary he mentions how Jamie Lee Curtis (Acting was superb) couldn't find a job after Halloween. He could not be believe it. He gave her another part in another masterpiece by him -- the fog. OAR 2:35:1 couldn't be better... Excellent, excellent film --- a classic.

Thunderheart - 3.5 stars: A FBI agent (Val Kilmer) with mixed blood (part Sioux) investigates a murder on a reservation. Along the day he has to deal with various aspect of his heritage including views on traditional versus progressive values. Very good movie and good PQ. Lot's of good movies playing on VOOM these days IMO.

Revenge of the Creature (1955) 3.0 stars. This 1955 B&W film and OAR 1:37:1 is great to see once again. A creature (the guill man) is discovered in the amazons and brought to the US for scientific research. One of the scientist Helen (Lori Nelson) is worth watching in her 1950s bathing suit version. The story is similar to the story of King Kong and Jessica Lange. The guill man looks like falls in love with Lori and kidnapped her like in King Kong. The ending is quite similar as well. The story keeps you interested because of this young scientist. She is quite good.

The Minus Man 3.0 stars. Very very confusing story... Owen Wilson has such charisma to watch. You often wonder what he is going to say next even when it is not a comedy. I liked the movie but I still do not understand the story and the point of the story.

Thunderheart 4.0 stars great film of an FBI agent who has native american indian ancestry and try to do the right thing for the native american indians reservation in South Dakota. In the beginning, there's a message that implies that the movie is based on a true story but it is not clear at the end whether it is a true story or not.

20 Millions Miles to Earth (1957) 1.5 stars. For a sci-fi picture about a creature brought from venus after an aircraft crash, it was somewhat ok. the end is very similar to king kong (I guess hollywood was really trying this idea...). Especial effects are very noticeable but it was made in 1957 so what do you expect?

The Organization 2.5 stars out of 5. I was waiting for a better movie but was quite dissappointed on this one. Mr. Poitier stars in this one and even though it started quite good by the middle of the story the end was revealed.

My Voyage to Italy 4.5 stars Martin Scorsese does the commentary for this excellent documentary on Italian Cinema. He explains how Italian Cinema influenced him in his career as a director. This is a B&W documentary 1:37:1 but he does such a great job in the documentary about the movies of varius italian directors. Some of these movies have excellent stories behind them and you have to appreciate in the delicate way that Mr. Scorsese treats them in his commentaries. He also makes the distinction of neo-realism and fantasy on various films and studios. He goes into the history of the italian cinema and how some of these films (without a budget) were made. The documentary is 4 hours long. I watched the first part of the documentary (2 hours). Excellent work from Martin Scorsese again! This is a gem that should not be missed.

Casualties of War - 3.75 stars: Very good Vietnam War movie! It's certainly not in the league of Full Metal Jacket or Platoon, but it's very good none the less. Michael J. Fox is a lowly private who is pitted against his Sergeant (Sean Penn) and others of the squad after they kidnap and rape a Vietnamese teen. The movie does a fair job depicting various elements of the armed conflict, but it does an excellent job showing conflict within the squad and with Fox...loyalties to those you fight and die with versus doing what is morally right. The violence is sometimes graphic, but always well placed and meaningful. Also, the camera work, music score, and PQ are excellent and made this an even more enjoyable film experience.

Gallipoli 1.5 stars presented OAR 2:35:1 and with Mel Gibson in the early stages of his career I have to give it a shot. I did not find the whole story fascinating nor was the movie very entertaining. I sometimes was tempted to change the channel but I wanted to see the end and the whole point of the movie. This a simple version (and I emphasize very simple version) of the Opening Scene of Saving Private Ryan. It is not even close compare to the special effects but the story is similar but not the same. In this one, hundreds of enlisted Australian Soldiers are slaughters by the Turks during WW II. The battle is fought at Gallipoli and the Australian soldiers are all slaughter in one simple battle that they had no chance of winning but that stupidity in the man in charge send them all the slaughter house. Pitiful indeed and many times this is hard to believe that people's ego can make irrational decisions that can kill hundreds of people. BTW, the event or the slaughter of the Australian Soldiers is based on a true event according to the movie.

Midnight Express 4.0 stars "the Bad Machine does not think he is a Bad Machine". This is such an emotional story. The story is supposed to be true. Billy Hayes imprisoment in a Turkish prison and how his life changed from a youngster with little on his head (to do what he did) to a mad man. His speech at the second trial was intriguing and he asked where is Mercy and Justice in a system that does not believe in Mercy and only looks at applying the full extend of Justice but a Justice without Mercy. There's so much in this movie that makes you think hard. The HD transfer is not the best but I believe I saw the same on showtime HD.

Midnight Express - 4 stars: Excellent Film! The entire family watched it last night...even had my teenage daughters take a break from their teenage ways to watch this one. Moral of the story, don't break the law while visiting other another country since you may not survive your punishment, starvation, unsanitary living conditions, and beatings.

The House that Dripped Blood 2.5 stars An inspector wants to investigate the dissapearing of tenants. The broker goes in to the all the previous tenants and their stories. The inspector does not believe and of course goes alone at night to investigate the house. He finds his answer and quite understands now why "the House drips blood". Anyone wants to rent?

Asylum 2.5 stars another of these movies with 4 classic horror tales. These all happen to be from psychiatric patients at a clinic. All great tales but to compare them with the tales of today's movie is not on the same scale.

Silence of the Lambs - 5 stars: What more can I say that hasn't already been said about this Classic! I can't believe it has taken me this long to finally get around to seeing it on one of the VOOM Cinema channels. It's a must see.

2 Days In The Valley - 3 stars: Darn fine cast with a clever little story, looked and sounded good, blah blah blah. To me, this movie is all about one scene -- the catfight between Charlize Theron and Teri Hatcher. Yum. And I think Ms. Theron's pants deserve an award for their role in that scene.

Untamed Heart 4.0 stars Christian Slater delivers a great acting performance. There very few movies that I like in which he is in and this happens to be one; this is a very simple romantic story about a girl who is looking for Love but has seen the dissapointment of Love in various relationships. By a very strange coincidence she encounters the Love that she was looking for. Moral of the story sometimes love stares us right in the face and we can't see it. Many times it is in the simple and rejected ones and we can't see it. Very emotional story and one of the best I have seen. "I am not finished" --- you will understand when you watch it.
