When will it end?

Also in Canada you might get the Discovery Channel, but its not the same Discovery Channel we get here in the states. In fact its a really watered down version of what we have here. Its not Apples to Apples.

I love the avatar Scott, I promise it hasn't been me.

I have never been more content with tv than the choices my roku offers. With a cheap dish package it compliments the roku well instead of vice versa.

The problem I have is not with my personal setup & pricing. It is the fact it is so blinking hard to sign up people. I don't make a dime referring people to netflix & ota which so many are doing. The value in regular tv for many has & is shifting.

StarDust this is the reason why I am against the Comcast / Time Warner Cable merger... Not only will they control many of the channels, but will control a majority of the internet bandwidth access.

To me that is a DANGEROUS thing.

More watered down? What do they do? Show static?

They don't show a lot of shows they show on the US version, and the shows that they show are months behind from when they were shown here in the US. Also a lot of boring shows not seen here in the US but are shown there so the channels have enough Canadian content to make the CRTC happy.

companies in Canada block the US importing of a channel. They will go to the CRTC (the Canadian version of the FCC) and petition for a channel called "___________________" which may be the same name but has different content. Some examples are
Discovery
Animal Planet
MTV
MTV2
History (and H2)
HGTV
Food
DIY
NatGeo
Lifetime
Nickelodeon

Have you seen their pricing? Lets take Shaw Direct (formerly Star Choice) as example
Their "Bronze" package...which you need to get anything else is 54 bucks!!

But anywho. What providers do is split up channels to different themes. Not all channels are alacarte. Here are some examples
History is in one bundle, H2 is in another
CBNC, CNN and HLN are in one bundle, MSNBC & Fox News are in another
Sports are broken up into 2 themes. NFL and Speed are in one bundle, NHL, BTN are in an other

It's similar to business accounts for Dish. If you think a la carte is such a great deal check those rates out. You'll spend over $100 just in programming and get fewer channels. The only way you benefit is if you get lucky and your favorite channels just happen to be all in one package.

For someone like me who has a lot of different interests, I end up with channels in all kinds of different interests packs. I would spend more money by going a la carte, no thank you.

It will end when it collapses. Then the scramble for recovery will start. Too late. And we'll have a new model and perhaps delivery method.

I haven't seen any Canadian tv in years,I wonder if networks such as Discovery and History Canada, play all the reality crap the US versions do here?If they don't then imo that makes them better.

I agree. A recent article in the LA Times suggested that Comcast is positioning itself for the future of TV delivery- which according to the Times is an all IP-based video delivery system. Almost everyone thinks the merger is a bad idea. We'll have to see if the gov't allows it.

Its about the same. One reason I use a vpn to watch stuff from the UK, Australia, Ireland, and Canada that never makes it to the US. Although Netflix and Hulu have stepped up this year with the foreign English language shows I like.

I never saw a tv until I was 14. We would listen to the radio suspense shows at night. Then my brother got one, with a towering tv antenna. And, even then, he would put a mirror in front of the tv and we would watch the reflection (it reduced the snow). Shut down at 11 pm and lite up at 9 in the morning. Only one station and we loves it. Opened the world to us in the sticks. I'm guessing it cost the brother 10 grand or so in todays dollars.

As time moved on, it got better and became my irish grandmas lifeline to the world and made her last years great.

Later my dad became the avid wrestling fan and would threaten to wrestle the tv.

I went through all the phases, from the RCA tuning fork channel changer, through Betamex and on.

Now I have it all (if i want it) and Sling, Hopper, use the various streaming services, etc and still shut it all off and read a good book.

When it is all said and done, we all have more options than ever at very reasonable costs with the ability (with minimum effort) to control our costs and customize our viewing.

The problem is there are so many options, that many are too lazy to proactively control their costs and just pay pay pay.

Sorry it was me trying to be funny. :(

I changed it back.

I just hate this topic because you are 100% correct in your feelings, its just I don't see things changing. And that actually saddens me.

It WAS funny and spot on. Must be some sense of humor deficit disorder going around.

I'm pretty sure you meant to say that the CRTC blocks the importation and distribution of US originated programming.

Canadian government policy requires that the programming offered to Canadian consumers must be substantially produced by Canadians with Canadian cultural values and interests.
